There actually isn't much new to report for Trix today, other than she seems even brighter to me today than yesterday. It's in her posture, her demeanor, her eyes, her tail. She seems to feel quite good. Now...she still wants room service, and is still spending most of her time upstairs instead of coming down too often. I don't know if these things are psychological at this point or not....but I suspect they are, at least to a degree. For now, that's fine...what Trixie wants, Trixie gets.

She did come down at breakfast time, and when she came down the stairs, it was with her old Trixie-self level of energy...that was the first time I saw that. She insisted on lounging on the ottoman (where I do her test) while MamaBean held the plate rather than eating on the floor with "the commoners  "; she had a pretty decent first round, but then headed back upstairs. She has also had a couple rounds since then.

MamaBean is still a bit clumsy with the gelcaps, but we'll get that down smoothly one of these days. So far, they've all gone down, and that makes me happy...it is such a relief to have everything down the hatch in one shot. At this point, she is only on BP meds (amlodipine and benazipril) and 5mg famotidine BID.

I did speak with the vet on Sunday about Trix's drug interaction reactions, and we agreed about being extremely cautious about adding anything else in at this point, including cerenia or odansetron (according to Tanya's site, even cerenia can cause a similar reaction to the cypro when combined with the amlodipine, although - unlike the cypro - Trix seemed fine when taking the two together). At the moment, Trix doesn't seem to need anything other than the famotidine, but I guess if that changes, we'll have to seriously analyze and examine the situation and options.

I survived leaving her alone all day while I was stuck at work...but man, by the end of the day, was I getting anxious to get out of there! I am sure she was happy to have all that time without a nagging, hovering MamaBean around.

I'm off today, but aside from feedings, I am going to let her be a cat and sleep and just be. Ok, ok....I'm going to have to pet her and scratch cheeks a few times, too....

Question:
Does anyone have ideas for the cheapest source of 10mg famotidine tablets? I got the last box at my local RiteAid, but I ams sure there are cheaper ones out there. I think I saw 90 tablets for 7.88 at Walmart...that's probably the best deal, right? As of now at least, it does look like she'll be getting 5mg BID on a daily basis. Because of her kidney issues along with the pancreatitis, the vet thinks we'll probably be continuing this for the rest of her life. She did say we could try cutting back to once a day at some point, but honestly, as of now, I hate to mess with anything that is making sure she feels good.

Time to start some chores...have a great day, LL!!

Amy

Re: 5/13 Trixie AMBG 98 - Cheap Famotidine?

Great news on her demeanor! I imagine she has gotten a tad bit spoiled. Lil T did when he was sick and it took awhile to break him of that. Totally worth it! I just buy the Famotidine at Walmart. I have never found anywhere cheaper. Let me know if you do though because T is on it daily as well. Enjoy your day home with the fur kids!

What? A "boring" Trixie report?  That's great news! :-D :-D Trixie deserves the royal treatment. "The commoners"

Re: 5/13 Trixie AMBG 98 - Cheap Famotidine?

Amy
Yay!! Mum so glad she's doing better and BG still awesome!

I always bought mine at Walmart. Last time I got them before Gus crossed, they had a bottle instead of the foil pack and it was cheaper than the foil pack.

Again...forgive me for asking a possibly redundant question but the normal dose for famotidine is 2.5mg bid. Famotidine is processed through the kidneys so I wonder if there is a reason she is getting so much. 5 mg BID is a lot but if your vet feels that is what is necessary, my question would be that if you decide to cut it back, why not go to 2.5 mg bid instead of 5 mg sid?

Re: 5/13 Trixie AMBG 98 - Cheap Famotidine?

My vet did feel the 5mg is what she needed when the p'titis started. She feels Trix may need this amount for the duration....however, once I really feel secure in how Trix is doing, she did say we can try cutting it back and see how she feels. I know she wants to be sure that Trix is solidly feeling well for several days before making any changes. I know she's concerned that if Trix backslides, it will be that much more time before she's back on track.

My vet does have some different philosophies about drugs and treatments...she has said if you're going to use a drug, then USE it, and that usually just using a little bit doesn't do anything worthwhile. For example, she thinks it is far better to administer 100mls fluids every other day rather than doing 50mls every day. It's her philosophy on how to balance QOL with treatment.

With that said, she is also open to how ECID (such as Trix and the cypro reaction - Trix reacted negatively to a smaller-than-usually-prescribed dose), and how every bean is different, too. At some point this week, I will talk to her about how to change Trix's dosage - 5mg once a day, or 2.5mg twice a day. I'm sure she'll tell me to try what I feel comfortable with and see how Trix responds, but I do always like to hear her thoughts. I think she personally may prefer the 5mg once a day approach because it's a similar idea to the fluids example, but I can't say that for sure.

I'm glad "her highness" continues to improve! :-D :-D Check out http://www.goodrx.com, they can tell you tthe costs at most local pharmacies. Just type in the drug name and your zip code and it shows prices at local pharmacies.

Re: 5/13 Trixie AMBG 98 - Cheap Famotidine?

She just had a very awesome early afternoon snicky-snack. It is so nice being home and being able to offer her food like this. I really think her appetite is "normal" in the quantity that she is consuming (and, even better is that she WANTS to consume it); at this point, it's just that she's not consuming it in the fashion that she used to normally do.

Back to chores...woohoo!

Re: 5/13 Trixie AMBG 98 - Cheap Famotidine?

Nice report on Trixie girl! Glad you survived the day withouth her, although I can imagine how you couldn't wait to get home to see her. Her numbers are amazing.  Hope you're enjoying your day off, Amy, with a little sneaking of the "hovering MamaBean" now and then, too!
Scritches and hugs from us.

Re: 5/13 Trixie AMBG 98 - Cheap Famotidine?

It's so great to hear that Trixie is feeling better and better each day!

Of course she's going to continue to demand "room service"! What self respecting cat is going to walk all the way to their food bowl if they have their bean trained to bring it to them?

I don't know anybody that can beat WalMart's price either...when you buy stuff in the millions, you get the best price from the manufacturers!

Sure hope things continue to improve with Trixie!

Re: 5/13 Trixie AMBG 98 - Cheap Famotidine?

What a wonderful report on Trixie. I'm glad to hear she's doing so much better and wanting to eat. :-D

Yep, Trix is feeling pretty good. She was extremely feisty when I tried giving her her meds. She has mastered the art of juggling that thing then flicking it out. I had to start over 3 times before I finally got it down her throat. I guess she needed to make sure I wasn't TOO confident about who is charge around here. I felt bad that it was such a challenge tonight, but to her credit, she didn't budge from her rocking chair even when I approached her with gelcap #2 and gelcap #3.

She was also quite feisty when DH did her PMBG pokey test. Feisty is good to see, even though it presents challenges to the beans!

I thought about what Marje said earlier about the famotidine dose, so since the worst of the pancreatitis seems to be behind us, I did decide to drop her back to 2.5mg BID and see how she does. If she starts feeling yucky, I can always take her back up.

5mg is the top of the dose range. When Gabby was first diagnosed and had p'titis, HL, etc., she was getting 5 mg BID. I think Marje's concern is that this is a med that's process through the kidneys (vs. the liver) so putting as little stress as possible on the kidneys makes sense.

I agree, Sienne (and Marje)...it definitely makes sense to go easy on the kidneys now that the worst of the flare is over. We'll keep a close eye on how she feels with the lowered dose and make any further adjustments if and when they are needed. So not loving the juggling act, but hey...what can ya do??

Hi Amy -

Great numbers today for Trixie.  :-D :-D

OMG on the gelcaps... well i still think you're doing great, even when Trixie decides feisty is the way to be. At least you know she is feeling better. :-D :-D :-D

Enjoy your evening. I hope it is a good one.

What a boring day! Ho hum!! It actually sounds pretty exciting and busy. So I just want to wish you a relaxing evening. So glad that the old Trixie is continuing to emerge.

Hugs and scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Glad she is doing well. The gel caps will get even easier with time. I agree for what it's worth that cutting back with the famotidine is a good idea. It is a another case of where less is often better. With Tiffany we even went to 2.5mg once a day.

I'm so glad to see things are continuing to improve for Trixie. How frustrating to have to do three gelcaps before you got one down. I think it's another sign she's feeling better.

Good job on surviving the entire day away from her. I'm sure she enjoyed the break! ;-) It's so hard not to just sit and watch her every second, isn't it, looking for some small sign. You'll go crazy doing that! You have to make yourself go do other stuff. You'll both feel better for it.

Sending vines for continued healing for Trixie and relaxation for the beans! :-D

Hi Amy. I've been trying a different technique with the gel caps for Max and he does spit it out when I go from the side if I'm not lucky. So this morning I went back to opening his mouth because I wanted to get it done fast and get him fed before his insulin. Some days just go better than others.
