We got back home from the vet about an hour and a half ago, but I couldn't face posting an update right away. I've been chilling on the deck with Pepper, spending some quality time with my boy. Pepper's heart has developed a gallop rhythm. The doctor drew blood for the acro and IAA tests and wants to wait until the results of the acromegaly test come back to refer us to a heart specialist for an ultrasound of Pepper's heart. I'm devastated. I had so hoped there wouldn't be any heart problems. I just can't believe this is happening to my baby boy.
If he is positive for acromegaly, would SRT help his heart now?

((((Nancy))))) I know you wished for better results, but at least you know more about what is wrong and can begin treatment. I hope the acro and IAA test results come back quickly as I have heard they can take a while sometimes, so that you can go on to the heart specialist. I wish you many many more years with Pepper.

My guy has a gallop rhythm - he's had it ever since he adopted us at about 1 1/2 years old. He's now about 14, has never taken any medicine for it and hasn't had any issues in that department. For a stretch quite some time ago, I was giving him 1/2 a baby aspirin, but I really think the vet was just trying to give me something to do. I hope Pepper can stay strong! (((Nancy)))

One of my guys also had a gallop for a few years, too...he was a senior when they noticed it. No meds, and it didn't seem to be an issue...he crossed for other reasons.

(((Nancy))) I'm sorry that the vet consult was upsetting. Neko also has a heart murmur. It showed up 6 months after we completed SRT. Once it was discovered, my vet recommended we go for an echocardiogram (heart ultrasound) and I think that would be a good idea for Pepper too. On Neko's echo results there was a tiny bit of thickening on the left ventricle wall. The cardio vet considered her changes mild and we don't do anything now other than periodically check the sound level and location of her murmur to make sure it's not changing.
Acromegaly can cause increases in the size of organs and in the heart, it looks a lot like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Either a murmur or gallop can result. Tarragon (of Melissa and Tarragon) is taking meds for his HCM. You might want to PM Norma (member Just-As-Appy) to ask about SRT and hearts. Her Tony had heart problems when he had SRT done and it gave her more time with him.
Paws crossed you get the B/W results quickly. If the sample gets to MSU by Thursday, you should get the results end of this week. They run the IGF-1 tests on Thursday/Friday.

The tests are run only once a week. So, hopefully, you'll have the results by Friday. They will contact your vet. I would start bugging your vet on Friday morning!
