Good afternoon L&LL,
Well, the anxiety level has increased a tad. Although this morning’s AMBG wasn’t awful, we didn’t see the usual drop hours after eating that has been Zeke’s MO. I’m anxiously awaiting his PMBG results. All we can do at this point is hope his BG will be steady (or hopefully lower) come this PM.
Well, as I mentioned in Zeke’s last condo, I’m a little concerned about Zeke’s recent (continued) weight loss. I weighed him this morning and he is down another 1.5 ounces. Funny though that Ivan is up an ounce. It just seemed too much of a coincidence; that coupled with the fact that Ivan has recently become much more interested in what Zeke is getting fed. I wanted to see if reducing from a 4% to a 2% formula would help lower Zeke’s BG. At a minimum, I figured it couldn’t hurt. So we’ve incorporated Nature’s Variety lamb into Zeke’s diet but not Ivan and Mia’s, as that brand is more expensive than the Wellness we’re feeding them.
Anyway, while I’m preparing Zekey’s plate, all of a sudden Ivan has started coming up to the cabinet, getting on his hind legs, stretching his front paws up the side of the cabinet and pawing at the bottom of the counter as if trying to get to Zekey’s plate. Hmmm??? I think something’s up.
As Zeke’s BGs tend to drop after eating, we’ve been setting the automatic feeder twice a day to dole out several meals within a two hour span both during the day while we’re at work and during the night while we’re asleep. Well, we have a security camera with recording capabilities in the den where the feeder is located. I thought it would be interesting to see what exactly goes on during these feedings. What I discovered from watching those recordings confirmed what I already suspected. Ivan is eating some of Zeke’s food!!!
Zeke learned very quickly that the sound of the feeder advancing meant there was a special treat to be had. We’d become very confident that both Ivan and Mia weren’t at all interested in the feeder being that we never saw them react to the sound or at any time go up and sniff at the feeder. We took advantage of this and often times would take a break and head out for dinner or hit a patio for a few hours in the evenings, leaving the feeder in charge of the +1, +2 and +3 feeding duties.
Apparently, at some point Ivan caught on. On the video, which has no sound, you know exactly when the feeder has gone off as no matter where he is, Zeke takes off like a rocket, darting immediately to the feeder – moves very reminiscent of that of the roadrunner from the old cartoons, I might add. He then quickly eats his meal. It’s all over and done with in less than two minutes. He’s then off the table, slowly making his way back to his favorite spot (at that particular moment).
In the foreground, off to the side, you see Ivan all curled up in his basket all sound asleep. But wait! A few seconds later you see a blink of the eyes. And then a few more very slow blinks. And then very slowly, as gently as possible, he gets out of his bed and starts slowly heading towards the coffee table where the feeder rests. His moves so reminiscent of the cartoon Pink Panther, you know from the cartoon intros to those old Pink Panther/Peter Sellers movies. Ta da, ta da, ta da,da,da,da,da,da DA,DAAAAA, ta da,da,da!!! A few seconds later you see his shadow in the distance, gently landing on top of the table. And then, nom, nom, nom, nom, nom. That sneaky kitty!!!
Zeke might always be the first to the feeder when it goes off, but that Ivan has now taken on the role of “the cleaner”. It was hilarious to watch. These kitties
. Well, I guess we’ll just have to feed Zeke a little more during the waking hours to make up the shortfall.
Thanks manxcat419, tiffmaxee,Camille and Cyclone, Tina & Sammy, and missMeows for your visits yesterday. We greatly appreciate the moral support. Camille, I'll get those to you as soon as I can.
