5/12: Pablo's AMPS 255...Day 3 at CSU

Yesterday's Condo

So today went off without a hitch too. Dr. LaRue took me on a tour, and I actually got to go in the room with the Trilogy machine while another patient was being prepped for treatment (read about the SRT here on the CSU website if you're interested. It's pretty cool).

I also got to look at Pablo's CT scan while she explained everything. She's emailing me pictures, but I haven't gotten them yet. The tumor was very obvious. She also said that his skull was so thickened from the acro that it was like a football helmet. She said he could join a kitty football league.

And they all said they love him and agreed that as long as they don't try to restrain him, he's a wonderful patient. If you try to scruff him, he's a devil cat.

WCR: After we got back to the hotel, I fed him because he was starving. Dr. Lunn gave him 1u of R and a snack after the radiation when his BG was 350ish. So he ate his lunch and then came nosing over to mine, which was a delicious baked potato with sour cream and butter. And darn if he didn't knock it out of my hands, onto my laptop, the couch, and the floor, stealing pieces away as fast as I could snatch them up. He then proceeded to lick the couch and floor for 10 minutes after I cleaned them. ohmygod_smile

In lieu of CT pictures, which will come later, here's today's photo:

SNOW! 5+ inches overnight, but it was a sloppy, slushy mess this morning. I stepped in a big puddle and soaked through both of my shoes and socks before I even made it to my car!

Oh my, snow!
Well we know how well snowflakes work for our kitties here.
I didn't have a chance to tell you how excited I am that you are there.
It is beyond fantastic.
I think the doctors there are heroes!

I almost feel I have to apologize for our Colorado weather. We are wearing long underwear one day and sandals the next and sometimes you need both on the same day! I live on the other side of the mountains, or I would try to arrange a visit.

I think it is so cool that Pablo travels so well. I have been reading your updates and sending prayers. He is such a cutie! It sounds like he is in good hands at CSU. I hope your whole trip is successful and enjoyable.

Isn't it cool! (And doesn't it make you feel better that you are doing it when you can actually see the tumor!) As far as the thick skull thingy...I've put a call out to Pablo's big brother. Hopefully, she'll stop in soon.

I would have been surprised if Heather hadn't jumped on that thick skull comment. :)
It's kind of nice to have the confirmation of the tumor, they don't always see one.

Very excited for you. (I've been emailing Dr. Lunn about KB and the next trial she's doing but I'm still not sure about it.)

Yes, I do have to chime in on that, but only because I think it's really funny. Holly - When Dr. LaRue showed me Boo's CT scan, we compared it to Milo, and she talked about what a thick skull Milo had vs the "normal" skull that Boo has. However, I can attest that even though Boo's skull may not have thickened yet, she's stubborn as a goat.

I would assume it's the acro that causes the thickness.

ETA: It's not the thickness that's funny, but the words Dr. LaRue uses to describe them. A "football helmet!" :-D

I had to chuckle at your description of Pablo stealing your lunch!! Silly boy! Didn't anyone tell him that cats don't like potatoes? It's great to hear how well you are both doing. Thanks for sending the updates.

Well,I already knew Pablo was hard-headed...I didn't need a $1,000 CT scan to tell me that! She said it's so thick it made the structures inside the skull appear grainy. Yikes. She compared it to a kitty with a oral squamous cell carcinoma with a completely normal skull, and it was astoundingly different. But it means absolutely nothing except that his head is probably heavier than a normal cat's.

And no, cats shouldn't eat potatoes, but Pablo has stolen and eaten VEGETABLES off of my plate before. Now you know that tumor is hungry if he eats celery, something even I won't eat! He will eat literally anything. I have to be so careful not to drop food on the floor because it's in his mouth before he even determines what it is. Frequently, it's not even food.

But I forgave him for wrecking my lunch. He's had a rough week and probably deserves all the buttery potato he can get, even if he doesn't need it!

Nina: When is the trial for the drug starting? Soon, I guess, because the lady at check-in thought I was at CSU for the "trial" with Dr. Lunn. It took me a minute to figure out she wasn't referring to the SRT.

Anyway, Pablo's doing great after two days of radiation, so I'm hoping these last two go as well. I'll keep you posted.

Just wanted to add my well wishes- we're all rooting for you!

BTW no snow back home in the Southeast!

Just popping in to see how you and Pablo are doing over there. He sounds like such a sweetie pie. (hint - pie ;-) ) Good luck and sending you and Pablo calming vines. cat_pet_icon

Happy to see Pablo is doing so well during his treatment--Those Drs are amazing & the BEST!!
Heling vines sent to sweet boy Pablo(except if you touch his scruff  )
Hugs to you HOLLY--You are brave & conscientious!! What a great momma bean!!

I have been following along in your journey.
I am so happy for Pablo. I don't blame him for stealing your dinner....he does deserve it. Putty likes to eat raw potatoes or at least he tries to eat them.
Wow, snow in May.....crazy weather.

Very nice report. I'm glad everything is going well for Pablo. In January of 2009, when I took Cecil to CSU it got up into the 60's! It's very pretty out there, I found a nice trail to run on. It was good break from all the stress and uncertaintly.

Take Care,

Sandy Dottie & Skippy

I haven't been here to the board in a long while and I guess I'm way out of touch with what's been going on. Day 4 already, I'm so excited for you and Pablo. CSU is certainly a very special place - the best place!!

Lol, looks like Milo and Pablo have something in common. Don't worry about Heather's teasing she is just jealous she has a cat with a "normal" skull, and not a mighty "thick skulled" gifted cat like Milo and your Pablo.

Of the cats (and Heather's Boo) that have participated in Dr. Lunn's study none of yet have been totally cured of acromagely, but I feel we are still going to see that happen. The cats all seemed to have had different results so far, some have already completely gone off insulin, some have become hypothyroid, some still have elevated IGF-1 and GH, etc. Really makes no sense, but I guess ECID.

Milo is still seeing improvement everyday, with absolutely no complications. His IGF-1 has dropped significantly and may even be normal by now - we haven't had it tested since Jan. His GH has been normal for some time now. I think my "thick skulled" boy is just a little more stubborn then the others and will continue at a slow and steady pace until his IGF-1 is normal and he is OTJ.

Sounds like your boy is doing great so far, and I'm sure the last couple fractions will go just as smooth.

Will check back for updates.

Hugs,
Wendi & Milo

PS: Say Hi to Dr. LaRue and Dr. Lunn from us.
