Well, if it ain't one thing, it's another. I am pretty darned positive that Trix's energy issues this past week are related more to her having a negative reaction to taking the cypro and her BP meds together than to her pancreatitis recovery. Last night, she gave me quite a scare. I had increased her cypro from 1/8 of a table to 1/4 of a tablet, just to see if it would give her appy a bigger boost so she'd possibly eat more on her own, without me coaxing her. Within about an hour of taking the meds, she just changed...her demeanor, her expression, her movements.....she looked very, very tired, zoned out, and was physically weak. You can imagine how worried I was.

I did some poking around and did find that the cypro in combination with BP meds can cause such a reaction in cats. It makes perfect sense. And, I do think this is what is what has been going on in general with her energy over the last week. But, since I was only giving her 1/8 of a tablet, it wasn't hitting her as hard - it just made her a bit sluggish. When I saw how she was last night with a bigger dose of cypro, I put 2 and 2 together.

I stayed up very, very late with her...hovering and basically driving her crazy! I'd say about 5 hours after the meds, she started seeming more like herself.

I also think this is why she was so crazy loopy on the bupe last week, too. She had bupe in the past after her dental and had no reaction to it (other than pain relief), but she also was not on BP meds back then, either. This time, her reaction to the bupe was SO strong...she was so out of it. I'm sure the bupe and BP meds are not a good combo for Trix.

So, I will bring these issues up with vetty next time I touch base.

In the meantime, she doesn't seem to need bupe, and I skipped the cypro this morning. She is eating very well without out - with coaxing, of course, but eating well is eating well. I did not try assist feeding last night because I was so concerned about her other issue, but I will give it a go this evening if all seems OK.

She also looks a million times better this morning...she is bright-eyed, she feels "solid" and not weak like last night, and she resting more comfortably. Last night I could tell she was not comfortable with the thought of putting her little head down. Today, she is relaxed and snoozing as a kitty should snooze.

AND...I'm getting better with the gelcaps! This morning's meds (BP and famotidine) went down on the third try. Woohoo...go, Team Trixie!

We had civvie Frankie at the vet bright and early this morning for her check up. We checked her BP, just in case. This is my new "cause"...being proactive about checking a kitty's BP, rather than waiting for a diagnosis of CKD or HyperT or anything else before checking it. Her BP was normal (phew!), and everything else looks good. Her BW will be back in a day or two...please send along any spare "good BW vines for my sweet little girl!

Time to head out to work, although I feel like I've already put in a full day. Have a great Saturday, LL!

Amy

((((Amy))))

Great catch on the meds combo! Hopefully you can now move from baby steps to toddler steps! I'm also glad to hear that Frankie's vetty visit went well.

Hang in there - I'm sending tons more healing vines for Trixie and lots and lots of calming vines (and energy vines) to you! :YMHUG:

Amy:

The vet may not know the answer to your question. If he's on VIN (Veterinary Information Network), he may need to ask about the drug interactions there. Alternatively, if you call the pharmacy at the vet school at Univ. of Penn., one of the pharmacists should be able to help you. If they can't (or won't), ask for the name of a PharmD (person with a doctorate in Pharmacy). They love this kind of thing. I had a great response when I called the vet school at U of IL. I don't know if the consult service at Cornell would help you at no cost. They charge for phone consults.

I know my vet is on VIN - she did mention that before - but she probably is not familiar with this sort of reaction. I'm sure she would have warned me that it would be possible if she was aware. I'll be touching base with her about Trix early next week. I did see her this morning, but today was "Frankie's day", so I resisted the urge to stray into Trixie talk...just to be fair to both Frankie and the vet.

Wow! Great catch, but how scary. You just don't think about med interactions when something isn't right, but I guess we should all remember that can be an issue. I'm glad you've got her feeling and acting more normal.

Sending healing and appy vines for Trixie, good BW result vines for Frankie, and relaxation vines for you!

Great detective work Amy!

Sometimes we forgot how powerful these drugs can be, and mixing them can be lethal.

Sure hope Trixie continues to show signs of improvement!!

Sending "great BW" vines for Freddie and "feel better soon" vines for Trixie!!

Not a bad start to the evening...she is not bouncing off the walls with energy, but she is SO much better. She came down for dinner; she jumped on the ottoman for her test; she waited by the laundry room door while I prepped food; she ate a very nice round all by herself (not enough, but continued baby steps!). I assume it may take a few days for the cypro to full clear her little system. Poor baby has been through so frikken' much these past couple months. She, her beans, and her civvies all need a break!

As long as she continues on this path, I will do a little assist feeding this evening to get some extra calories in her.

It's time for a little gelcap fun...BP meds, famotidine, and cerenia.....

Hi Amy ~O)

Excellent detective work! This is all very interesting to me, and makes me wonder some on the issues I had with Mannie, though we did not use the cypro. You are so on top of things. My hat goes off to you. I hope you will get the answers to your questions, know you won't give up the ship until you do.

It is great to read that Trixie is doing so much better. Hope fully in time the appy will return to what you'd like it to be. Be BG's are excellent, And I still can't believe she is ding all this without insulin..

Very cool on the gelcaps too. Soon you'll be a pro! I am glad that method is working out for you. :-D

Hooray on a good vetty visit for Frankie. YAY!

Enjoy your evening tonight. I hope the day has been good.

She is a new cat tonight. I just gave her another round...she ate 95% of it without me coaxing. She saw me coming with the plate, and she walked over to me, rather than me walking over to her....

I am sure we still have some work to do...but...

Wow, Amy. Good thinking... I guess the interactions of medications and unique responses to medications happen just like they do in people.

I am glad that you see an improvement in her behavior. Sending prayers for continued improvement for Trixie and for you.

Great detective work on the medication interaction. Reading your condo title made me recall something I had read about amlodipine when Bear Man was taking it. Tanya's CRF website, in the section on hypertension and subsection on amlodipine, mentions the possible amlodipine/cyproheptadine interaction, and also mentions a caution with regards to amlodipine and Cerenia. (Bear did take both of those meds and did not seem to have an issue with them). In this case, it sounds as though the interaction involves one drug hindering the effect of the other, rather than an additive effect. She suggests spacing them 12 hours apart. It doesn't sound like you are seeing any problem with the two meds, but it is something else you can ask the vet about when you talk to her.

nailbite_smile ...I did give Trix both amlodipine (along with benazipril) and cerenian tonight. I just looked at Tanya's site and saw this. So far, she seems perfectly, completely fine, unlike last night. I will definitely ask my vetty about this before dosing cerenia again.

I do dose her amlodpine twice a day (ie, 1/4 tablet BID) rather than once a day, so spacing them apart by 12 hours would be a challenge. She also may not be on cerenia long term...that is currently a wait-n-see.

She is eating really, really well tonight....

Wow Amy......I hate to repeat what everyone else said, but "Great detective work!" Kudos to you, mamabean! :thumbup

So wonderful that Miss Trixie is feeling better and eating better, tonight too. flip_cat

I'm glad you figured out what was going on with the medicine interaction. I hope Trixie continues to have more energy once the rest of the cypro gets out of her system. It's nice to hear she is eating some for you and feeling more herself today.

I'm glad Frankie's vetty visit went well. Sending prayers for good b/w results.
