Well, if it ain't one thing, it's another. I am pretty darned positive that Trix's energy issues this past week are related more to her having a negative reaction to taking the cypro and her BP meds together than to her pancreatitis recovery. Last night, she gave me quite a scare. I had increased her cypro from 1/8 of a table to 1/4 of a tablet, just to see if it would give her appy a bigger boost so she'd possibly eat more on her own, without me coaxing her. Within about an hour of taking the meds, she just changed...her demeanor, her expression, her movements.....she looked very, very tired, zoned out, and was physically weak. You can imagine how worried I was.
I did some poking around and did find that the cypro in combination with BP meds can cause such a reaction in cats. It makes perfect sense. And, I do think this is what is what has been going on in general with her energy over the last week. But, since I was only giving her 1/8 of a tablet, it wasn't hitting her as hard - it just made her a bit sluggish. When I saw how she was last night with a bigger dose of cypro, I put 2 and 2 together.
I stayed up very, very late with her...hovering and basically driving her crazy! I'd say about 5 hours after the meds, she started seeming more like herself.
I also think this is why she was so crazy loopy on the bupe last week, too. She had bupe in the past after her dental and had no reaction to it (other than pain relief), but she also was not on BP meds back then, either. This time, her reaction to the bupe was SO strong...she was so out of it. I'm sure the bupe and BP meds are not a good combo for Trix.
So, I will bring these issues up with vetty next time I touch base.
In the meantime, she doesn't seem to need bupe, and I skipped the cypro this morning. She is eating very well without out - with coaxing, of course, but eating well is eating well. I did not try assist feeding last night because I was so concerned about her other issue, but I will give it a go this evening if all seems OK.
She also looks a million times better this morning...she is bright-eyed, she feels "solid" and not weak like last night, and she resting more comfortably. Last night I could tell she was not comfortable with the thought of putting her little head down. Today, she is relaxed and snoozing as a kitty should snooze.
AND...I'm getting better with the gelcaps! This morning's meds (BP and famotidine) went down on the third try. Woohoo...go, Team Trixie!
We had civvie Frankie at the vet bright and early this morning for her check up. We checked her BP, just in case. This is my new "cause"...being proactive about checking a kitty's BP, rather than waiting for a diagnosis of CKD or HyperT or anything else before checking it. Her BP was normal (phew!), and everything else looks good. Her BW will be back in a day or two...please send along any spare "good BW vines for my sweet little girl!
Time to head out to work, although I feel like I've already put in a full day. Have a great Saturday, LL!
