Recap: AMPS=477 (30 minutes late) Shot 2U +2~463 +5~467 +10.75~441 +11.5~450 Shot 2U +4~447

No poop since yesterday. I did not give him the Tramadol last night. Stopped yesterday morning. He doesn't welcome physical contact. Petting might be ok but I tried to lay down next to him last night and it was no go . He's keeping to himself on one floor and not going upstairs. He's peeing. He seems to walk ok. He's getting up and down a chaise that's a foot off the ground but not very often. I got some raw buffalo with MiraLax in it into him last night. I don't know if there was enough water in it but he drank water right after. I can't get a consult with the internist Roni thinks knows something about Lantus until Wednesday . The vet in charge of Sammy isn't back until tomorrow. I could get a consult with one of the other doctors at his place. I'm going to at least 2.25U this morning.

Re: 5/10 Sammy +11~468 Situation still crummy

Going to check out ss and yesterday's condo before I chirp in here, but I'm thinking yes since numbers are so high....hold on a minute

Re: 5/10 Sammy +11~468 Situation still crummy

Maureen, I did some more reading and checked out your ss and I really don't feel comfortable giving dosing advise, but I'm thinking it may be ok to give him his shot, considering how high Sammy's numbers are.

I also feel that you should call back the Dr. and ask if you can get Sammy in ASAP instead of waiting for Wednesday, like an emergency visit because things just don't sound good and this has been going on way to long. I am worried about Sammy.

Please change your post title and add DOSING ADVISE NEEDED to it bring more attention to your question.

Sorry, I can't help you more. Sending white lights and vines for Sammy

Re: 5/10 Sammy +11~468 Wound on Side

New development - might explain situation - wound on side - possible infection - going to hospital

Re: 5/10 Sammy +11~468 Wound on Side

Ugh, sorry to hear this, but at least this could be one reason why numbers are so high. Sending good vettie bean vines to Sammy. I know you need a hug too (((Maureen))) Keep us informed, please....

Oh, did you shoot?

Re: 5/10 Sammy +11~468 Wound on Side

Thank goodness he is going to the hospital. Please update when you can.

Re: 5/10 Sammy +11~468 Wound on Side

Hi Maureen, It's a good thing you discovered the wound. And doubly good that you're headed to the vet. Lots of healing vines being sent to Sammy.

Waiting to hear how things go. A wound can produce all the things you have been describing, in my experience.

Snowflakes snowflakes snowflakes.

Re: 5/10 Sammy +11~468 Wound on Side

Good catch on the wound. I hope this explains all of Sammy's problems. Paws crossed and ❧❧❧❧❧❧❧❧❧❧❧❧❧❧❧❧❧❧❧❧❧❧

Re: 5/10 Sammy +11~468 Wound on Side

So glad you found the wound. Best of luck at the hospital and many hugs to you both. (((Maureen and Sammy)))

Re: 5/10 Sammy +11~468 Wound on Side

Sammy's in the hospital with an abcess.

Under the matted blood - say between the size of a quarter and a 50-cent piece - the skin had already gone necrotic. They have to cut it out under ether and put a drain in. The same surgeon who did his teeth and he came through that with flying colors despite the heart murmur.

I swear this thing wasn't there Saturday when I was giving him a full body rub. The surgeon said in her experience you can have a tiny puncture that closes up and a week later you've got a running abcess.

I felt something in the dark last night but he was growling and so utterly kranky I left him alone. Then when I was on the phone with Roni this morning about the shot and going up and him not eating I look down and he's on his side and there the thing is as plain as day.

Roni should be congratulated for saying I shouldn't clean it myself.

B/c of the semi-dried blood you couldn't tell whether it was a puncture or a laceration. The picture the doctors drew for me was of multiple punctures around the oozing mess.

One good thing about all this. He pooped when they went to get him out of his carrier and he did eat a bit of tuna fish when we got there.

They are fully informed of his situation and they said they'd watch his numbers.

They have all his paraphenalia.

Amazing how many things a cat can have just to move from one place to another.

What I am not prepared to do is to lose my mother and my cat in the same week.

My mother died yesterday, making a rather poetic exit that was way too long in coming. It was her wedding anniversary. She was married on Sunday May 9 and Mothers Day that year was that day. So she's a GA too. She'll be buried with the ashes of the family dog, a border collie named Sorrowful Jones after the Damon Runyon character, a runaway who we believed had been abused by a man. She seemed to make a distinction between 17-year-old boys and 18-year-old men. Boys were ok. Men she was leery of and aggressive with. She was the best psychiatrist in the world. Her ability to sense your needs and act sympathetically was incredible.

It was a privilege to have known her.

Maureen, I'm so glad that you did find that abscess this morning and got Sammy to the vet right away. At least they were able to fix him up AND he got a poo!! That really is some good news.

I am sorry, however to hear about your mother's passing.

Maureen, I am very sorry for the loss of your mother. Even if you were expecting it, it can still be devastating. My heart goes out to you.

I hope Sammy will be well and home soon. You have done a wonderful job with him and I'm sure you miss him.

Sending you peace and comfort,
Ele

Very sorry to hear about your Mother :YMHUG: :YMHUG: and good Sammy is getting the care he needs for the abscess and hope he is back home with you soon sending healing vines your way for him

Dear Maureen, Deepest sympathy on the passing of your mother.
Optimism for Sammy. We hope that the abcess will clear up quickly and it sounds as if he is in good hands. Please continue to update.

Ella

((((((((Maureen)))))))) So sorry to hear about your mother. She sounds like a wonderful person.

cat_pet_icon cat_pet_icon I hope the infection clears up quickly. Sounds li a good time to cuddle up w/ Sammy and comfort each other. :YMHUG:

Maureen, I am so very sorry that you lost your mother. Three Social Teas -- beautiful. She sounds like a fantastic character.
She'll be with you still. I lost my mother many years ago and I hear her almost every day. It's funny how the things a mother says, come back and mean different things, during different parts of ones life. They never stop giving to us. Mine was a character too -- how I love her. Hugs to you.

I am so glad you got Sammy in, he'll be much better soon.

Yeah, she was a pip. The dog had a citrus passion. My mother insisted that her oranges HAD to be cut in eighths. "Yeah, yeah, ma, I know. (for the 200th time) Eighths." So she can get at the pulp better.

Maureen, just want to say you did a great job today finding that wound & taking Sammy right to the vet--The vet is a 24 hr. facility, so Sammy will be well taken care of--You are a loving, caring momma bean & any animal is lucky to be in your care.
In the midst of losing your Mom, you were able to take care of Sammy, work, & keep it together--That means you are one strong lady!!

My deepest sympathy on the loss of your Mom.

Just asking out in LL, would the Tramadol be a med that should be used for pain relief of Sammy's back problem??
I know Maureen was questioning this med & I am not sure about it--
I'm sure Sammy's high bg's were from this abcess & now he can heal & get back on track--Hugs to you both!!

Gee Maureen...I am so sorry to hear about your Mother...deepest condolences to you.
You are going through SO much in such a short period of time. Hate when Life does that...
Hugs to you across the miles....

I am so glad you got him to the vet so quickly....how did the wound happen....can you even begin to guess?
It might have been a puncture at first? Isn't that weird how they are fine one day and the next they have this THING there. :YMSIGH: Well, glad he did well during the surgery...he will be just fine soon. No wonder her was nasty last night. Good about the pooping too! Get better quickly Sammy! :?: :YMHUG:

You've had a helluva week and it's only Monday! My condolences on the loss of your mom. No matter when that loss happens, it's hard.

Good thoughts for Sammy. Hopefully, he'll be back at home soon.

I'm so sorry to read about your mom. (((((Maureen)))))) I'm sorry Sammy is in the hospital too, but it sounds like he is going to be fine.

Hi Maureen and Sammy, so sorry to hear about your Mom! Scrabble had an absess on his side about a month ago. The vet had to do surgery to remove all the bacteria and clean it out. It turned out to be an infection that I dragged into his skin with a needle not knowing it. He went on ab for 2 weeks and is as good as new and just had his otj party yesterday. Sending healing vines to Sammy and calming vines to you!!!

Yeah, that's kinda the way I feel. If this is only Monday what's next.

But I also have an ethical dilemma I need some help with.

There's this stray cat who may be the source of Sammy's problem. He's currently living in my garden. I understand that one of the neighbors took him to a shelter and the shelter refused to take him in so she brought him back and turned him loose,
This is just what another neighbor told me and I haven't had time to check it out.

Anyhow - and despite being warned about doing this before - I started feeding him. Well, what was I supposed to do? Let him go hungry on my doorstep?

But my cats are indoor/outdoor cats and he's making their lives a misery. When I left tonight - I had to go - Cheerio, one of my civvies, was cowering under a bush after a neighbor pointed out that he and devil cat were having a set-to so I stopped the car in the middle of the street - just when the cops were coming down - long enough to go running up the hill my heels digging into the new sod to chase everybody but Cheerio wouldn't come out and I had to leave hoping that somebody would let him in. Instead he was on the back step when I got back and I guess he's alright.

To coin a phrase: Why can't we all just get along?

What should I do?

Maureen, my condolences on the loss of your mother. She sounds like an amazing lady, and she surely raised an amazing lady! I loved the stories you've shared with us here =)

I'm so glad Sammy is going to be ok! I wonder if he got into a spat with the stray? When you get time, I'd call animal control and maybe ask for a live trap or an officer to come out. Explain that the stray is causing trouble with your cats and you need it gone. I wouldn't even mention that the shelter has refused it in the past, just make an issue of the fact that you have a cat in the hospital because of this stray (I'd assume, based on your description of Sammy's wound that he got it fighting with the stray) and that it is terrorizing your other cats too.

Sending lots of healing vines and snowflakes your way! I hope Sammy can come home very soon.

HI Maureen
What the vet told me is the bacteria was probably already on his skin (which I wondered how the heck he got that since he is an indoor cat, the only thing I could think of was when he was first diagnosed, he stayed overnight at another vet office and I thought maybe he picked up something there?). One time when I had shot Scrabble he moved when the needle was in and it caused a bruise. That is where the absess formed. The vet told me it was a freak thing how it happened. I felt guilty thinking it was something I could have done to him. Not sure about yours but is it in an area where you shoot?

It's almost as though the skin is looser on Sammy's right side so I usually shoot there. His abcess is on the left where I've been trying to shoot. I asked the doctor this morning if it was from the needle. He said no.

Maureen Hope you made it through this very difficult day--Many came by to give their messages of support-
Hope you get through tomorrow with some degree of ease, knowing the great love & care you all gave to your Mom.
Your FDMB family is here for you! Sending healing white light to you & your whole family and of course, healing vines to Sammy.
Hope Sammy is getting better & better--HUGS from Us!

Maureen I am just catching up with what has been going on.
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your mother. I lost my Dad in December and it is still hard to believe.

You have been through so much.
I am glad to hear that Sammy is is doing well.
Take care of yourself too. (((Maureen)))
