Happy May Day Lantus Land - can't believe it is May already.

So, wow, RBC is quite something else. This is definitely a first for us. I recall reading on the board that this is when our kitty's poor little body is dumping all that stored up sugar into the blood stream - right? Can someone go over that phenomenon again for us? I find this whole process absolutely fascinating.

I woke up at +7 & tested last night, next time I'll just rollover & go back to sleep. I must say though, good riddance to those boring flat pinks. Lanky seems very chipper this AM. He greeted me in the kitchen talking up a storm, ate hardily, and now is behaving himself by calmly laying on the counter right next to me now. He doesn't seem to have the urge to try typing this AM. We are still on cloud 9 after experiencing those blues yesterday. The good times certainly do make up for the bad, don't they?

You are absolutely correct, this is rebound. Rebound is a protective function. Lanky's body, like most of our kitties' bodies, has become accustomed to those very high BG levels. This becomes what is the new "normal," despite it not being a good thing. As you start treating the diabetes with insulin, those BG numbers begin to come down. Then you have a day like yesterday where you have a drop into desirable, but what is now Lanky's body's response as unfamiliar territory. As a result, there is a panic. The liver interprets these "low" numbers as dangerous -- even though these numbers were very far from a hypo. The liver attempts to protect Lanky's body from those dangerous numbers and in an effort to do so, dumps both stored glucose and counter-regulatory hormones into the bloodstream resulting in the bounce to high numbers that you saw this morning.

The aspect of this process to be aware of is that it can take up to 72 hours for those counter-regulatory hormones to clear. You need to wait for the rebound to clear before making any dose changes.

So, the good news is that Lanky's liver is working very well!! The more time that Lanky can spend in lower numbers, the more his body will get used to having BG levels in better, more "normal" ranges. The process of getting Lanky used to better numbers with fewer bounces is what we refer to as Liver Training School (LTS). Some kitties graduate quickly. Some (like Gabby) are slow learners.
 
OK now, not a bad PMPS given RBC, eh? Lanky has a healthy dinner appetite, now he is preening. This is so exciting as changes start to take place with Lanky's internal chemistry. Here comes house mate, Miss Nubbins, begging for a snack. She's the last of the 4 still craving dry & she gets a smidgen of w/d as a one kidney kid. So I have to go supervise closely...All in all, a good Caterday!
