Ok so as you know I have two diabetic cats, Tiggy and bailey. I poke both of them with the same technique, same kind of lancets etc etc. Tiggy is a good bleeder but bailey can take two or three pokes or a long time to get his ears warm.

So why does Tiggy have inflammation along his ear edges? You can see and feel raised swollen areas where I poke him. The other ear I don't touch doesn't have that. The spots aren't sore or if they are, he doesn't give any indication. I have been avoiding one area now for months to see if it will get better but the swelling hasn't gone down much. And it looks like the swelling can occur after just one poke session.. Maybe if I don't seal it properly or hit a vein occasionally.. Any ideas? His ear edge is almost starting to distort in one area and I worry about scarring. Anyone ever seen this? How long does it take to heal?

Hi Wendy,
I'm sorry to hear Tiggy's ear is swollen.
It's not the same, but when I used to suck at ear poking, Lucy ears got lots of bruises, or got red and looked painful.
I soak a small pile of cotton pads with water really well, put them in a small plastic container, and keep it in the fridge.
I take one cotton pad and wrap the edge of her ear when it looks red and painful.
Thankfully this doesn't happen much any more, but I still keep some soaked cotton pads in the fridge.
Maybe it will work for his swelling too...

If it happens after one poke that sounds like a sensitivity?

You might be able to give the ear(s) a rest and test paw pads for a while? Do you think he'd let you touch his feet?

Yeah I was wondering about an allergy to the lancets. It's not scar tissue the way it feels when you poke it or how it looks... Maybe I will try the other ear for a while. No way will he tolerate the feets!!
