I was so frustrated with the little bastard this morning! Mikey's AMPS has always been an absolute ***** to get because he uses that time to run around like it's a game of chase. Sometimes I'm lucky and I'm working from home so it doesn't really matter if it takes me an hour to pin him down, test him, and shoot him. This morning, it took me 45 minutes, making me a half hour late to work. :YMSIGH: I was yelling at him like he was a toddler and telling him to knock it off because he was old enough to know better and I didn't have time for his damn games! :o  :? Even after all this time and for how good he is for every other test and for all the tricks I know from treats to feeding first to catching him off-guard, I'm still stuck losing this daily AMPS battle with him.

I'm a little late to the conversation, sorry. It's dark now so i can't do a virtual tour but here are a couple pics of the catio.
...
For us, because of the need for the expanded sheet metal to be sure no bobcats or coyotes could get in (you'd have to have a blowtorch to breach the thing), it was not a DIY project. In the bottom photo, the window goes into a guest bathroom and we normally keep the window open when we have no guests so they can either enter through the window or from the library.

Thanks so much, Marje. :YMHUG: Unfortunately, I'm a renter and can't make any permanent changes to the building so creating a proper Catio is not possible. But, this has given me a few more ideas about tarping off half the patio from above and maybe simply blocking out the other half of the patio. I'm starting to think along the lines of mesh tenting.

The expanded sheet metal may even shade a bit like tinted glass?

Of course I bet the open air catio doesn't see (as much) use in the Tucson summertime?

It's probably opposite for me because blocking the sun is the only thing I'm worried about with the tenting idea I have in mind. We'd have to re-arrange our entire garden and patio and move all our succulents out where they can get the sun, but at least it'd give us some more "indoor" type plants we'll be able to grow; more herbs, that type of thing.

Hi Kay, I'm not sure if I've ever dropped by your condo. I know I've seen you on the FB page. Anyways, HI! Just thoughtnid introduce myself and say what lovely numbers Mikey has this morning...even after being a butthead and making you chase him. I wish I had a cool catio, but like you, I rent. :YMSIGH: And you're right about the 45 degree angle thing. I'm fairly sure I remember it being mentioned on an episode of "My Cat from Hell". Past that, I couldn't tell you anything about it. So I guess I'm not much help! haha! Hope you have a great day and hope Mikey enjoys surfing in the blues and maybe some greens! ;-)

Thanks for stopping by! From googling that 45 degree angle thing, it seems to work! Only problem is: the stupid plastic, vinyl fencing we now have so I wouldn't be able to attach anything at 45 degree angles anyway. :YMSIGH:

And he's definitely hitting the greens today! My awesome brother just tested him a little bit ago and got a 78. I'm a little nervous nailbite_smile since it's still early in his run so I'm heading home right now on my lunch to test him again...even though the whole point of my brother testing him was so I wouldn't have to go home on my lunch (24 miles round-trip). ohmygod_smile

That just means your a hands-on mama bean ;-) and it must be nice to have your brother there to test. Hope he's surfing for you and behaving!!!!

Re: 4/9 Michelangelo AMPS 151, +4/78, +5/85

He seems to be holding steady and I also set down his "high carb" food (Merrick's Grammy's Pot Pie at 8%), so I'm not too worried anymore. Getting my brother to test for me is like pulling teeth, so I'm grateful whenever he does it! I give him a four-hour window (between 11 to 2) and he always has an excuse about having to be somewhere right then so he "won't be able to test him" and then I come home on my lunch and my bro is sitting there on the couch doing nothing. This is the same person who thinks I'm "breaking Mikey's pancreas" by giving him insulin no matter what research and proof I've shown him otherwise. ohmygod_smile

And since everyone seems to be responding (belatedly) to yesterday's thread  :

It does provide shade and privacy. They can see out but it's harder to see in. It's actually quite comfortable out there in the heat of the day in summer so they are out there almost nonstop in the summer.

Tucson is not like more humid areas. The ambient temp might be hot but because of no humidity, when you get in the shade, it can be quite pleasant.

We don't have the heat of Tucson, but it does get in the 80s during a nice summer heat wave and you can easily get fried from the sun even when the marine layer is in place. We're close enough to the beach (~1.5 miles) that we get a great ocean breeze, but the more you tell me about the full shading, the more I'm thinking of finding myself one of those tents. :-D

Lovely pics--- so basically, he found the piece to the puzzle?

Yes, Marje, Thanks for these pics! My two biggest complaints about most Catios is that I either can't reproduce in my own backyard (because of the damn fencing) or they aren't very aesthetically pleasing and I'm all about aesthetics! Your pics really allow me to see the potential of a nice-looking Catio.

Welcome to Mikey's condo! :YMHUG: I am not a morning person. At. All. Not even with coffee. ~O) If it's before noon, then I'm on auto-pilot. I think the little brat knows this and uses it to his advantage to get me to "play" chase with him. At his PMPS (and every other test), on the other hand, he's a perfect damned angel. o:-) I like to think he does this game with his AMPS to remind me daily what everyone goes through when they first start out. Keeps me humble and keeps me from "forgetting my roots," so to speak. At least that's what I tell myself to keep from going mad! @-)

Well, let's hope he starts coming back down again first. ;-)
