4/9/11-Petsitter, Need help with DC's Blood Sugar. HELP!

Im Pet sitting for my Aunt, and DC's blood pressure is up at 14.7. September 2nd was the last day he was at 5. He's been gradually going up higher and higher each day. We've been giving him 1 unit of insulin. What should I do to bring his blood down? We also started using a new tester yesterday, could that be the reason why? Could it maybe be reading wrong? -P.S Nikki

Can you change the subject line in your first post to give your cat's name and bg number, and maybe add "advise needed", so more people will answer your questions and lend their support. (((hugs))).

hi nikki! good for you for taking care of DC - i'm sure it's not easy.

i don't have an answer for you, but think someone with more knowledge on it will stop by if you do this. Go to your first post in this thread, click to edit it.

in the subject line write: " i'm petsitter, need help with DC's blood pressure"

that will get the right folks coming to help you. check back fairly often - because of the holiday it might take a while to get someone with BP knowledge to pop in, but i'd check every 30-60 minutes.

I Have No Idea how to, This is what i was told to do by my aunt, and i'm following her instructions.

mmmm - good question sherry. i see DC's spreadsheet ends 8/27, probably when noreen left.

nikki, can you tell us the most recent day or two's blood sugar numbers? we need to know what time you gave the shot, then what time the tests were and what the Blood glucose (sugar) readings were.

something like this:

What have his recent readings been, and what time were those readings? We're here to help you. Glad Norine showed you how to post for help.
 
Maybe he just got some bites of some higher carb food, some left out bread or something like that...or had a little stress, lately? I just used my calculator too, and 265 isn't that bad, as Sandy said. Is he eating okay, and behaving like normal?
 
so really, DC is looking pretty good. anywhere in those ranges are ok numbers.

what you'll likely see is that the numbers are the highest right before the shot and the lowest somewhere in the middle, about 4-7 hours after the shot. from DC's spreadsheet, it looks like the lowest is about 7 hours after the shot.

if that lowest number gets below 2.8 then we want you to post right away and ask for help in your subject line, and we would walk you through what to do. other than that, all of these numbers are fine.

edited to add - it looks like noreen dropped his regular 1.5u dose to 1.0 unit while she's gone, so DC is unlikely to go too low.
 
I just took a look at DCs spreadsheet. It looks like your Aunt lowered the dose while you are Pet Sitting. So it makes sense that the BG numbers may be slightly higher than usual.
14.7 is not dangerously high, it is a safe number. Also, your shooting a bit late yesterday may have contributed to slightly higher numbers because the previous shot poops out before the next one can take hold. Do your best to stick to 12/12 schedule.

By "New Tester" do you mean a new glucometer?
 
Good job and thanks for taking such good care of DC.

While these numbers may be higher than usual, they are not dangerously high -- he is probably just stressed out from his mom being away.

If you could spend some time playing -- exercise will help lower DC's blood sugar too and maybe help him de-stress some too.
 
nikki, if you're ok now, you might want to re-edit the subject line and put something else in it.

this place is full of helpful people and every single one of them will respond to a HELP! to see what you need. :-D

don't hesitate to pop back on again if you need anything, though. when does your aunt noreen come home?

These numbers are higher than DC's usual but given the reduced dose, it's perfectly fine. We generally reduce the dose if there's someone petsitting and who may not be able to test as regularly. I don't remember when Noreen is returning. If DC's numbers keep trending up or you want to post to learn more or for some moral support, please open a new thread. We're happy to help in any way we can.
 
Hi Nikki!!!

Just lending a voice of support to you. DC looks to be safe and the reduced dose would be because your Aunt didn't want you or DC to stress or worry too much.

It is not unusual for a cat to stress out a bit either when the regular owner leaves. Especially cats that get shots or pills on a daily or routine basis ...from the same person all the time.

Keep posting here and I am sure many will be along to help you out with managing DC. I'd think if DC stays down below 280-300 most of the time things should be OK.

Watch for symptoms of vomiting, lethargy, etc. like you would for any normal cat. Increased urine out put might occur too if he gets to running to high above his renal threshold. Make sure you leave plenty of water available for him.

If he is drinking the bowl dry...leave a second bowl and post here. We might be able to help you and DC out.
