4/8 Star OTJ trial day 7; looking great!

Star and Maggie did well with the pet sitter while we were gone. He is back on his regular meal schedule now, and I will test him at lunch and dinner times today (before food, +1 and +2). We had a nice little vacation, Star's ears had a break and a chance to heal, and he is looking really good!

Question: since Star's diagnosis, I have been feeding him canned foods as low in carbs as I could find (mostly 0-3, sometimes 4). Given his pretty low numbers, is it possible he should be getting more carbs, like a food in the 5-8 or even 9-10 category? Should I try one, or should I wait until the end of his trial? He seems fine--lots of energy and very happy and content--but I don't want his BG to be too low (although I realize that the average is 60-120, every cat is different, and some might run a little lower than the average). Thanks for any advice!

It's actually 40-120! And there is no such thing as "too few carbs":

All animals have a metabolic requirement for glucose. Carnivores, such as the cat, convert glucogenic amino acids and glycerol to glucose for the maintenance of blood glucose, and therefore, have no established dietary requirement for carbohydrates.

In general, an absence of dietary carbohydrate in the feline diet will not affect blood glucose levels or cause an energy deficiency; this is because the body can use protein and the glycerol portion of fat for glucose production, and fat and protein for energy.

You said he's got "lots of energy", right? That means he's turning proteins and fats into all the energy he needs. :mrgreen:
