4:30am last shot & small meal before the overdue dental (neither cat has been to the vet in 2 years - I've had a little PTSD when it comes to the vet). Dental scheduled after noon today, so got ok from vet to feed both cats at 4:30am on schedule and ok to shoot Guinness with 1.5u insulin. I'm going to try and get a +2.5 before my hubby whisks them away.

Hope you all have a great day!

Re: 4/8 Guinness AMPS 352

Sending good vetty dental vines. Hope all goes well and Guinness recovers quickly.

Re: 4/8 Guinness AMPS 352

Linda, good luck with Guinness' dental today. Two kitties on the same day getting their toothies cleaned! At least we can be stressed together. I'll be looking for an update from you.

Good luck with your dental Guinness! Hope you all have a great day!

Re: 4/8 Guinness AMPS 352

Good morning guys .. I know you are probably nervous today about the dentals being done, but I am sure both kitties are going to be just fine and come out smiling with their clean pearly white teefers!

Re: 4/8 Guinness AMPS 352, PMPS 427 Dental Update

4:30pm we are back from the vet. Both my cats had a long day at the vet. Guinness is recovering after having some minor dental surgery. He had a reabsorbed molar that had poked a hole in his gum. Dentist drilled down tooth and sewed up hole. Said it might have cause some infection and increased BG's, but she's just not sure.

I was told his Free T-4 thyroid test was a 58.7. I guess normal is <50. She didn't think he necessarily was hyperthyroid though, because he hasn't lost any weight. He does have an enlarged heart though (which I guess is an indicator of hyperthyroid). She gave me some information about having an echo cardio gram and radioactive iodine test and possible therapy done, but said maybe I should wait and get another test in a few months and go from there. She did not recommend just haphazardly starting him on Tapazole. I'm not sure what to do about the hyperthyroidism right now. The test is hell-expensive ($1000.00+) and she wasn't confident that that is what is going on with him, plus we just spent $2100.00 on both cats for their senior panel and dentals. I'm kind of tapped out right now.

I'm going to keep him at the 1.5u of insulin for a few more days, give him his antibiotic and see what happens. Got to go out and find those syringes with the 1/2 unit marks. Anyone is San Diego know the best place to find those?

glad the dental is done and over with....hopefully you will start seeing better numbers with Guinness!

sorry can't answer your question on the syringes...hope you get responses on that soon....

Thanks for the good wishes Claudia and Rocket. Wow, Rocket you have got some stuff going on, how is your bean handling all of that?

If you want Relion syringes, then you're heading to Walmart. I'm not sure where else you may find them. I buy mine on-line from Hocks. Also, do you know whether you need a prescription in CA for syringes? Some states require a doctor's Rx.

Glad the kitties are home safe and sound.

Re: 4/8 Guinness AMPS 352, PMPS 427 Dental Update

I'm glad you could get dentals for your kitties. It is definitely possible that a dental issue could make him need insulin again. It wouldn't be the first time we have seen that.

Two things:

1. Please keep an eye on his BGs tonight. Some cats drop quite a bit as the effects of anesthesia wear off. He is high enough that he should be fine, but every now and then we have a cat whose numbers will drop a lot the night after anesthesia. Get a test or two before bed just in case.

2. You might just try rechecking the Free T4 in a few weeks to see if it goes up or down. Hyperthyroidism isn't always symptomatic at first, and doesn't always involve weight loss. It's pretty common in older cats and also tends to make diabetes harder to regulate, so I'm sure if he has that going on it could also be contributing to his going back on insulin.

Re: 4/8 Guinness AMPS 352, PMPS 427 Dental Update

I think if I take in my bottle of insulin with the script tag on it, they will give them to me. But yes, they just won't sell you syringes for no reason. Especially, if you look all tweaked out and tired like I do from worrying about my cat

Re: 4/8 Guinness AMPS 352, PMPS 427 Dental Update

Libby and Lucy,

Thank you for the heads up about testing him tonight. I was feeling kind of burned out and since he was kind of punch drunk and difficult to test at the PMPS, I was thinking about not testing him tonight, but now I will.

Also, thanks for the info re: Hyperthyroidism. I'm pretty sure that is what is going on with him. His is CONSTANTLY hungry and searching and meowing for food even right after he eats. He howls at 3 in the morning to get us to wake up and feed him and he tries to steal food from our plates. I'm just not ready to shell out the $$$$$ yet, but I am sure I'm headed that way. Good thing I went back to work to support my cats.

Re: 4/8 Guinness AMPS 352, PMPS 427 Dental Update

Hi Linda,
That's a lot of money for a thyroid test, I think. I was under the impression that the T-4 and the Free T-4 were sufficient to diagnose Hyper T. When Stu was diagnosed with Hyper-T last summer, we were going to have the I-131 cure done if it turned out that his kidneys would tolerate it (he also had CRF: he was not a candidate for the I-131). The whole procedure, including boarding for the requisite amount of time to "detox" at Hypurrcat (http://www.hypurrcat.com/index2.html) in Bedford Hills, NY would have cost about $1800. So your figure for a test alone ($1000+) sounds high. There is a feline Hyper-T group on Yahoo that you might want to check out: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/feli ... =354124632

I'm glad that the dentals are over and hope that all will be OK now. Walmart sells their Relion brand syringes with 1/2-unit markings. Otherwise you can buy Monojects or other brands online at Hocks or at American Diabetes Wholesale.

It's good that your kitties are home. Have a good evening,

Ella & Rusty

That sounds more like the cost for a radioactive iodine treatment for hyperthyroid. After I-131 treatment, if the dose is correct, the hyperthyroidism is corrected and no further medication is needed. If the I-131 is too much, the cat may wind up with hypothyroidism.

And sometimes, effects of a high thyroid level are hiding renal disease; after controlling the hyperthyroidism, you may start to see signs of renal failure (this did happen to one of my cats).

Yes, the vet has warned me about the hyperthyroid hiding kidney disease. Happy, happy, joy, joy! It's the cost of the test & if positive treatment is included. If negative, oh well, you are out the $1000. At least that's how I understood it.

BG down tonight, but I guess it's from coming off anesthesia. We will see what tomorrow's numbers hold. Goodnight all.
