Good morning Lantus Land! it's a good day here in western oregon! little bit of sunshine and all is well. punkin's clearing that bounce very nicely and will likely be green in another hour or so. i'm feeling encouraged - guess we're finally getting enough insulin into the big guy to perhaps flatten him out into greens. that would be ideal.

vet appt in a half hour to look at his teeth and see if he needs a dental. will talk with her about his general health of course - we're nearly to one year (june 1) since he was diagnosed with the acro, almost 7 months since the SRT to treat it, and if she wants to do blood work for anything i think we'll get the IGF (growth hormones) checked again to see if the tumor has switched off yet.

CPC status maintained (mentioning it just for you, liz!), auto feeder working as it should, anya being ornery as usual although she didn't bring any new treasures to the top of the stairs this morning.

off to the vet's - see you all later.

Have the best vet visit you can, Punkin. Hoping for good test results.

Re: 4/7 punkin amps 248 +3/136 +4.5/76 vet visit

the bad news is he needs a dental - she said his back teeth are covered, ugh. and she doesn't think anyone in town has a separate anesthesiologist. i'll check with the vet dentist i took him to for a consult last year, before before trying out the place she suggested in portland.

the good news is everything else! blood pressure and temp both good, eyes good, no cataracts although some aging changes in his eyes. she said the eye drool is nothing to worry about and that some cats just drain more to the outside than through their ducts. he doesn't have an excessive amount of goobers.

the little lump on the back of his neck is about the same size, she still thinks it's a little cyst.

we talked more about pain killers - we had such a good response to the acupuncture at first with him jumping up on the furniture, including the dining room table. over the past month that has disappeared. the vet acupuncturist said that it could be from the gabapentin because it makes some cats unsteady and they just want to not move. he wants to stand on his back feet when we're getting the pill pockets/food ready to beg for the food, but lately he just raises up barely and falls back down on all four feet. so . . . the outcome is we're going to ween off the gabapentin and have the tramadol compounded into gel caps that i can put in the pill pockets. the downside of tramadol is its bitter taste, so hopefully this will get the good of it without the taste.

i took his testing equip along - just curious about whether or not he experiences vet stress.

104 at +3.75 right before we left home

83 at +4 after arriving at the vet's. there was a bulldog with a cone of shame being weighed near us that was a slobbering, wiggling mass right as i tested him. apparently no vet stress there.

76 at +4.5 in the exam room, after the tech had checked him in but before the vet came in. i gave him 1/2 of a regular, not diabetic-friendly pill pocket at that point

87 at +5.5 back at home - i'd assume that little rise when he normally would decrease is from the carbs of that pill pocket.

and for all i complain about his fur, she said he felt wonderful and didn't have the typical diabetic coat.

all in all, a pretty good report, i thought. we'll get bloodwork done before the dental and check everything at once.

Hi Julie,
thanks for sharing what's going on with Punkin. I must though say that he looks good in green

Since Kitty just started OTJ life, I have not yet even thought about other heath issues/checks.... What are the possible issues with diabetic cats having dental work done?

Yay Punkin!!! You're looking good lil buddy:)
Hopefully mama will be lucky to find you the right person to get your chiclets shiny again:)
Until then....keep enjoying your green surf :-D

Re: 4/7 punkin amps 248 +3/136 +4.5/76 vet visit

nice numbers!

Forgive me for asking this, but has Punkin's heart been checked (at least a chest x-ray) recently? I assume Dr. Lunn would have checked him out thoroughly and I know he had anesthesia several times at CSU, so there's probably nothing to worry about.

I've just been thinking it might be smart for acros to have their hearts checked before anesthesia. Bloodwork can give you a peek at how the kidneys and liver are functioning, but it's hard to tell how the heart is working unless you look. It stands to reason that the heart could be enlarged and might require some extra precautions during anesthesia. Sorry to bring up something to make you worry. After what happened to Jazzy and to Shadoe, I had to say something.

Wow. Maybe pinkin ought to visit the vet more often. Look at those puuurty numbers today.
Hugs

always fine that you bring up a concern, libby. i am aware of jazzy & shadoe and the anesthesia - although i hadn't really thought that necessarily meant that punkin might have a problem. something to think about, because he does have a little bit of heart issue with the left ventricle. it showed up in the pre-SRT testing, but he then went through 3 more bouts of anesthetic with the SRT, so i'm assuming (perhaps i shouldn't) that as long as we have a separate anesthesiologist that it would be ok.

he is maine coon too.

hmmmm, i wonder who i should ask about that. i could email dr lunn and ask her. what do you think?

it sounded like his teeth were pretty bad. when he got them cleaned last year there were 2 teeth that were removed. one of them was disconnected from the roots and only held in place by the tartar.

WOW!! What a day and even with a vetty visit!!!!

I'm sorry to hear he needs the dental but everything else sounds pretty good. Did they talk to you about his cigarette smoking habit?   I was watching his video on Ella's condo yesterday and he sounds like
he's a pack a dayer!!

Hey Julie,
All in all, a good report for Punkin. I think it's a good idea to do as Libby suggests and have his heart checked out before anesthesia. Poor Punkin has punk teeth? Maybe they just need a cleaning. Nice numbers during and after the vetty visit.

Wishing you a good evening and a Happy Easter,

Ella & Rusty

loving the good vetty report! ( except for for teefers report)

Punkers...gotta get a cleaning??
Wishing for the easiest, healthiest cleaning ever for you!

amazing numbers, Julie...rocking the greens- even at the vet's!

All in all, not a bad report! Dental - Blech, rest - good!

I had no idea punkin was trying to kick a smoking habit too. That can't be helping his teeth!

Hi Julie and punkin, its been a while since I visited your condo.

Very nice vet visit numbers, but too bad on the teeth cleaning. Hope you can find the best kitty dentist!

Have a good Sunday!
