Bailey went to 38 last night so back down to 2 drops. He was brawling with Tiggy this morning and is now curled in his bed.

I got some more history on Bailey yesterday:
We got Bailey over a year ago from my SIL. He had been untreated diabetic for easily 6+ months but my SIL hadnt paid attention because her other cat was more sick. Originally both cats were obese. But Nikki developed the usual diabetic signs and lost a lot of weight over time and eventually started staggering and falling down a lot. Finally she took him to the vet where he was diagnosed as diabetic and had a curve done $800 and given insulin. She shot him a few times but a few days later he started staggering all over the place even worse and his back legs were giving out entirely. Back to the emergency vet where he died later that day.

This was before Tiggy was diagnosed and I didnt know anything about feline diabetes.

We went to visit shortly after Nikki died and I heard the history and saw how thin Bailey had become. SIL had assumed it was because Nikki was eating all the food. She also mentioned Bailey was peeing everywhere. I persuaded her to take him to the vet. She did... eventually... after a few months (tendency to procrastinate).. and it turned out he was also diabetic.
Meanwhile Tiggy had been diagnosed and was OTJ at that time and I knew more about it. SIL is on a low income and couldnt afford to treat Bailey and didnt trust her vet after Nikkis death so DH said we would take Bailey to try and regulate him.

Anyway find out yesterday Bailey was way worse than we were ever led to believe. His peeing was so bad SIL had him locked in a small washroom all day with food water and litter tray. Plus one day ( a month before we got him) she found him lying on the floor unresponsive, mouth open, eyes glazed. She didnt know what to do and so went to work ? !! Came back 8 hours later to find him in the same position. Assumed he was dying. But a few hours later he had perked up. I am thinking now it sounds like DKA.

When we got him too he would almost crawl (he could barely walk) to the food bowl, to the litter tray (if he made it at all) and then hang over the water bowl and drink and drink and drink. He was dirty and his fur was thin and a mess.

Its been 15 months now since we adopted Bailey. He has residual damage from being hyperglycemic so long, and the DKA - he has these weird twitches of his head sometimes and his vision is poor. But he is one healthy boy otherwise - running and jumping and nice clean thick fur. He purrs and plays with toys and Tiggy. Its amazing what a difference 2 drops of insulin can make!! Plus we also treated him for bad teeth ( we removed all but 4 canines as the rest were rotted) and an ear infection.

Re: 4/7 Bailey AMPS 270 - more history

Wow Wendy, you not only saved his life but have given him such a better quality of life.

I always wondered how you ended up with 2 diabetic cats and now I have the story - so glad it has a happy ending!
