Re: 4/5 Max LOW 37 +25 min 43

Hi,

How long after shot did you get that 37?
How is his BG now after the food?

Just going to look at your SS.

Re: 4/5 Max LOW 37 +25 min 43 +20min 72

The 37 was at +5.5. After the food and then a little more food with karo he is at 72. I should not feed and test in 30 minutes, right?

Re: 4/5 Max LOW 37 +25 min 43

That 72 is a lot better.

Does Max normally nadir at around +6 - +7? (Just looked at your SS).
If so then you still have between .5 of an hour and 1.5 hours before nadir.
Yes, I''d wait and retest and check that he hasn't dropped again.
Karo can wear off quite quickly.

Re: 4/5 Max LOW 37 +25 min 43 20 min later 72 with karo

Yes he usually nadirs at +6-+7. Last night or early this morning, 4:30 a.m. he was crying for food so I fed him. He ate really fast and drank and then regurgitated it all up. Now I wonder if he was dropping then. He just meowed to me from the other room by his plate. Should I feed him a little of his own food and see what he does? How fast do karo effects leave?

In my own cat karo/glucose can wear off in around 40 minutes if insulin is still active in the system. Not sure what the 'norm' is.
What you've given might be sufficient to steer Max through to Nadir.
A little normal food should be fine.
And then another test soon?

Re: 4/5 Max LOW 37 +25 min 43 20 min later 72 with karo

Thanks. He is asking for food so I will give him a little of his regular food and test again in 30 minutes.

Re: 4/5 Max LOW 37 +25 min 43 20 min later 72 with karo

I'm here for a while, Elise, so will keep an eye on your thread until you're sure Max is OK.

You're handling this really well.

Re: 4/5 Max LOW 37 +25 min 43 20 min later 72 with karo

Thank you. I panicked at the 37 as my gut knew he would go green and I am usually wrong. I think I am okay now if you need to go to sleep. What would I do without all these wonderful people here???

I'm in England and it's 10am here. Just sitting here sipping coffee. ~O)
I'm sure you will be fine, Elise. You kept a cool head and knew exactly what to do. Top job!

I'll check back later to see how Max is.
I don't use Lantus but understand that this will qualify him for a dose reduction...?

Re: 4/5 Max LOW 37+25 min 43 20 min later72 +7=60

I'm glad I am not keeping you up. It's 2:06 a.m. in Los Angeles. I forget sometimes that people from all over the world post here. Yes, he now qualifies for a reduction. We just increased him a few drops from a fat 1.75 to 2 units. He has gotten reductions three times so far but doesn't hold them and then we need to increase. The last two times I was able to catch him before he dropped under 50 so he didn't need a reduction. I need to buy calipers as the syringes can vary by as much as .5 which I wonder in his case if that is making it so hard to get the right dose. Thank you for being there.

Sounds like you've had a bit of practice at this 'keeping the BG up' malarky then, Elise!

Maybe. My syringes can vary quite a bit too so I know what you mean. I don't have calipers but I do have a couple of syringes filled with coloured liquid (to certain dose levels) that I sometimes use for comparison! Calipers makes more sense though...

There are also a whole load of other things that affect how a cat's body deals with any given dose of insulin; all kinds of subtle factors that are outside of our control, and that also cause variability.
I hope you are able to find a fairly consistent dose for Max. He's certainly keeping you on your toes. (And keeping you awake!)

I see he dropped a bit at the last test (even with that snack of normal food). Have you been able to estimate how long that karo lasted in his system this time?

And are you comfortable that he is past nadir now?

Re: 4/5 Max LOW 37+25 min 43 20 min later72 +7=60

I just tested again and he was at 61. Maybe he will surf. He usually has hit nadir by this time "I think". I guess that is why it is suggested to do tests at +8-11 for times like this. On the other hand, I can never predict what Max will do. I think I have it figured out and he does the opposite. He still has a little of his regular food on his dish but he didn't eat it. I bet he wants the hc stuff. He used to eat that as it was lower phosphorus and I am phosphorus phobic since so many cats get CRF.

Re: 4/5 Max LOW 37+25 min 43 20 min later72+7=60+7.5=61

I would encourage him to eat a little regular food.

Come on up a little, Max.

I agree.
Would be good to see that the BG is coming up a tad more.

Re: 4/5 Max LOW 37+25 min 43 20 min later72+7=60+7.5=61

Okay. I will test again now and see if he has come up at all.At this point he isn't hungry. I could try some gravy though.

Re: 4/5 Max LOW 37+25 min 43 20 min later72+7=60+7.5=61

Darn, he dropped to 56. I just put out a spoonful of gravy lovers. He's eating it.

Good idea. Looks like he's still keeping you on your toes, Elise.
(You must be getting really tired by now, too..)

Re: 4/5 Max37+25 min 43 20 min later72+7=60+7.5=61+8=56

This is the longest he's kept me up since I started testing in January. He was diagnosed in November but I didn't home test. My vet took him off insulin in December as his Nadir was 60-100 and he was only getting .25 unit. Knowing what I know now that was a mistake. On the other hand, I couldn't be home to test and it was a safe decision. Since we started back on insulin in January he has not regulated at a dose.

He ate the food. I'll test again in 30 minutes.
