Yay! He did it, finally! +3=461 +6=350 +7=424. Wow, that was tough. I'm sure you all can relate. At least now his numbers are visible. Gee, do you think that helps at all? Good advice on the Lantus from previous post. Link to nutrition site was very helpful. Have to admit that this week was a rough one: new meter, new dose, new diet. But, it was all worth it because we got NEW BGs! I don't know what Gus and I would have done without the constructive advice and support found at FDMB. I'm talking as if it's a battle that's been won when it is just starting for us. Glad I'm here. I'll eventually get to posting a profile for Gus. My attention has been focused on him all week.

Re: 4/5 Gus AMPS=HI; +6=350!!

YAY GUS!!!!! Well, Bev, we all gotta start somewhere and this is a big thing for him....so glad to see it. Come on Gus..get back down...pink, yellow, blue, green!

Re: 4/5 Gus AMPS=HI; +6=350!!

I have gotten loads of advice about the amount of food Gus gets. I've increased the frequency of his snacks and will increase the amount he gets at mealttime. I'll be much more attentive to the timing of his snacks too. I'm beginning to get the pattern of food as related to insulin and his BG.

Re: 4/5 Gus AMPS=HI; +6=350!!

Woo hoo!!! Even some pink today!! That is great news, Bev!! FYI, throughout the day as you test, if you go to the very first message in your condo and hit the edit button, you can change the subject line so that the new numbers will show up on the main page and people can track your progress. Is especially helpful on days when you're needing some guidance.

Fingers and paws crossed that you'll be seeing some NEW colors on the spreadsheet soon! :-D

Have a great evening!

Re: 4/5 Gus AMPS=HI; +6=350!!

great news! steep learning curve at the beginning, isn't it!?! but you're getting it and Gus' numbers show it.

Re: 4/5 Gus AMPS=HI; +6=350!!

Steep?! This stuff is not for the faint of heart. But we would do anything for our fuzzy kids.

Re: 4/5 Gus AMPS=HI; +6=350!!

I don't think I was ever so pleased to see a pink number! (No doubt, you were happier!)

A housekeeping detail (sorry to be a nag)... Please remember to link your condo from the previous day to today's condo. That way if people like me want to go back to see what you were referring to re. the "advice about Lantus," we can. Here's the link to your previous thread: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=40459

GO GUS!!!!

Will you look at that PMPS! SWEET!!!!! I can only imagine how glad you must be to see numbers! Well, I know, I think we have all been there at one point. YAY - a 310! This is cause for celebration. :-D :-D

heehee, michelle, what do you mean a 310 is exciting? Gus got on the scale - now that's REALLY exciting!

time for a party for Gus & Bev! woo-hoo!

you're absolutely right bev. it's not for the faint of heart. anything for our kitters.

look at Gus go!!!

There's one suggestion I was planning to make tonight, before I saw that Gus had dropped into better numbers. It's still worth discussing, though, because (unfortunately) he will probably bounce back to high numbers again at some point.

Gus has been sitting in very high numbers for quite a while. Lots of cats here spend a good bit of time in pink or even red when they're first starting out, but 600s have to be getting old and probably don't feel very good to Gus. Have you heard of Humulin R insulin? R is a fast-acting insulin that is occasionally used as a bolus along with Lantus. It is quick in and quick out of the system, and is very powerful. It can be used to take the edge off the very high numbers so the Lantus can work better.

Humulin R should not be used without guidance, because even a very small drop can pack a punch. Some of us here have used R with our cats, and we can help you learn to use it safely. If you're interested just let me know. Humulin R can be bought without a prescription at most pharmacies for less than $50. The vial will last a long time, pretty much forever really.

You would need the R insulin, syringes with 1/2 unit markings, and lots of test strips. Have syrup and high carb food on hand just in case. We would start during a cycle when you are home to test a lot. We would NOT start on a day like today, when Gus is lower than usual! It would be used only when he starts a bounce, just to take the edge off. What do you think?

How comforting it is to hear from so many of you about Gus's improvement. The genuine-ness of all the kind words comes thru. You guys are great. Maybe I'll be able to encourage a newbie someday. All the other members of our furry family acted like carefree kittens today. I'm sure they sensed that the alpha cat was in a bad way and when he improved, they all did their happy dance. On my list of "to dos" is to create a profile for Gus. Soon. I'll be up front and honest with you, that R insulin makes me nervous. Does it have any other precautions other than its rapid fire results? Have you used it on your cat, Libby? It's something I will ceretainly consider. I'll need to read about it first, though. Please don't mistake my hesitancy as mistrust, I appreciate that you have offered to help us. G'night to all and let's get together again real soon and do this again!
