Re: 4/4: Cedric amps 266

When I took our girl in for check-up, I was so hoping she had a UTI or something to explain her sugar, but no such luck.
Wouldn't it be nice to find something to explain why Cedric is back on juice! Our girl had sugar of 268 when she had bad teeth when OTJ. After pulling them her sugar gradually came back down to normal. I wish you luck.

My baby is also super hungry as well. When do you think this will subside?

Once their BGs are more regulated and they have gained back any weight they have lost their hunger gets more normal, when I first got Autumn she was eating 4 (5.5oz) cans a day, now she barely eats 1 can a day.

We just got off the phone with cjleo and I testing him about 10 minutes early from the actual +4.
He is a bit short on energy, hence the overeating. I am going to try a new pen tomorrow to see if that changes anything. And look into B12. He still loves getting into the shower when I am done though....

Well, if you find out the reason for that shower thing let me know - my non diabetic cat has always done the same thing while Miz Jez waits till I get out and then hollers to be picked up so she can lick the water off me...

Should I be feeding her more food? The problem with her is I am also trying to convert her to wet food. She only eats dry. Puts her nose up to wet food. All of my others eat wet, but the dry food is like crack. After she is finished if any is left over they will eat it. So I try to sit with her when I feed her then if I see her start meowing like she is hungry I give her more. It's such a process! But I would do it for her any day.

It is definitely a process and one that thankfully I have never had to go through...all 14 of mine thought they hit the jackpot when mom brought home the first diabetic cat with a case of Friskies canned food...lol.

How are you serving the canned food? I do have a few tricks that have worked with my small zoo that might help getting Abigail to realize that the wet stuff is far yummier than that old dry crunchy stuff.

When I do the feedings I give her a bowl of wet food before I show her the dry food. I obviously have to get her to eat because she needs her shot. I bought that forti flora (not sure if I'm calling it the right thing). It's a probiotic that they say tastes like the dry food. She isn't interested. I tried cheese too- no go. I even tried mixing tuna in but she wouldn't even pick out the tuna because it touched the wet food. I am going to Trader Joe's tonight for the cat tuna. I'm hoping that may be the stepping stone to cross her over.

A trick that worked with my bunch is they hate it right out of the can...I have a couple confirmed gravy addicts. So I fool them into thinking they are getting gravy by adding a lot of warm water to it and making it about the consistancy of applesauce. I also use the warm water to get all the aspic jelly like stuff out of the can to make a fake gravy. Plus I mix the water in real well so they can't just drink the water off of it they have to get the food with it.

One of the differences between dogs and cats is the way they learn what is and is not food. Dogs instinctively know, which is why they automatically will chase a rabbit from the very first one they see...for cats they have to learn from their mother, so if they grow up on dry food they don't know what to do with canned, as well as they have no idea how to eat it. With dry food they use their tongues to flick it into their mouth, with canned normally they have to bite it, if it is straight from the can, by mixing in the water and making it really soupy they can again flick it into their mouth like they did with the dry. Plus it makes sure they get all the fluids they need, since they aren't really designed to drink from a bowl, because they are a desert animal, designed to get their fluids from their prey.

I will try adding water to her bowl. That is worth a try. And you are right. I bet because I've had her since she was 6 weeks old and the only thing I ever fed was dry. That's all she wants. All of my other cats were adopted later in their lives. Two were adult kitties- one from a friend so I know she had a good life before me, but the other was returned to the shelter twice so I am not sure of her history. So the others have had wet food sometimes in their life.
