Do you still feed "Temptations Treats?
Temptations are a high carb treat that can bring up blood sugar. Best to stick to a pure meat treats. Temptations have corn, rice and wheat flour - all carbs.

Susie's SS looks really good for only 4 months. It took my Kitty Ravan over a year until I stopped seeing pink #'s. It's been over 3yrs & he still occasionally goes high . He'll be 19 in June.

(Love the big white Heart on Susie's chest! :D )

I only give her Temptations when I want to slow down the drop and only three or four. I know they are high carb. They are her absolute favorites. They are also in my hypo toolkit. Nice to know you think Susie is doing well for four months. It must have been frustrating for you to have Ravan in pinks for so long. Amazing that with his diagnosis that he is almost 19. You have obviously taken very good care of him. I love her big, white, heart too!

Amazing that with his diagnosis that he is almost 19.

Ravan also has Kidney disease, high blood pressure & seizures!! He gets CBD oil that controls the seizures & meds for the kidney disease & high BP. I feel his other problems are all related to the Diabetes.
It's a good idea to feed low Phosphorus cat food. There's not much to pick from but I try to keep the phosphorus below 250mg. Some of the Fancy feast is much too high in Phosphorus.

He's doing pretty good so far. :) Hanging in there (like me):p

(you can check out Ravan's Spread Sheet from 2018 till now & see what I mean about those lousy Pink & red #'s! )

I hope Susie heads back down and surfs safely for you. Sorry if I confused you yesterday. I think it's the terminology. I was calling an update to your daily thread a post and you were calling a post a new thread. I meant to update the daily post, thread, condo whatever you want to call it and not start a new one.

What do you feed Ravan? I had a cat with stage 4 kidney disease two years ago. It stunned me when he was diagnosed because it all happened so quickly. I tried so hard to help him but it was too late. I know about the phosphorus challenge with KD cats. Maybe with all of Ravan's other issues is why it took him so long to get regulated. Has he been on Levemir all this time or did you do some insulin switching?

I think I understood what all were saying. When I want to say something new, or update, I need to do it in the thread and not the original post.

He started out on Lantus. After a few months he began twitching when I gave him an injection. I did some research & discovered , Lantus has an acid base and that causes the sting. The acid crystals dissolve in the body and the sting disappears but it can feel like a bee sting initially.

Levemir, has a neutral PH. It seemed to work better for Ravan.

He was fed a Raw meat diet all his life. That's why I was so surprised he even got diabetes. ( Recently I read they are discovering that dry food might cause diabetes in some cats. )

After he got diabetes he began refusing his raw meat. I was advised to try Fancy Feast & I really didn't want to use it. I still think it's "garbage" After a while I realized it was better to occasionally give it to him when he refused all the "good" food I offered. I still refer to Fancy Feast a "Kitty Crack"

Read they spray something on it to make it taste very good to kitties! YUCK!

Check out the Food Chart. I wrote a list of the canned food lowest in Phosphorus. if it's much over 210mg I add a bit of Aluminum Hydroxide Powder to it. He also gets Calcitriol twice a week for Kidney disease. Lots of Info on Cats Kidney disease. https://www.felinecrf.org/

D-Mannose powder 2 times a week to prevent a UTI. It works better than any antibiotic. Knocked out a UTI in 3 days with no side effects. It's all natural.

I've spent many hours doing research. Best way to help your kitty is to learn as much as you can. Some of the things I told my Vet he didn't even know. He retired last year & I miss him so much. He was always open minded to new information.

Best of luck to you & Susie :)

Thanks, Sue. It definitely came out of the blue. I think I might have sabotaged her progress when I reduced her dose last night. Or, she is bouncing today.

I probably wouldn't reduce the dose based on a PMPS number...that was a very nice solid blue there and a slightly higher number than the last two - so next time just go ahead and give her the regular dose - although there's no way to know that reducing the dosage caused the subsequent higher numbers or the bounce, doubtful that just that little bit caused it - however dose changes are usually best determined by the nadir - the lowest number reached during the previous cycle. So I'm glad you returned to her regular dose - and I know sometimes it's a bit nerve racking to shoot those lower numbers - just take a deep breath and say 'shoot low to stay low' and you'll get past it. Of course you're the one holding the syringe and you're the one that knows what's ahead as far as your evening plans - sometimes maybe better to err on the side of caution if you're going out for several hours and can't be home to monitor or other extenuating circumstances....each of us has to make our own decision at that time - but the general rule of thumb is not to reduce based on AM or PM pre-shot readings....hope this is helpful for next time :)

And on the Temptations - I kept those things around for a while myself - Luci used to just go wild for them - and then I discovered she would do the same crazy thing for freeze dried meats and fish. She simply adores those little stinky Orejin meat treats! She jumps up on the counter and purrs loudly hoping I'll give her a couple to nosh on...look around on Chewy for those kinds of things. I got my last batch from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0727PPPFY/?tag=felinediabetesfdmb-20

In the light of day I realized Susie never got too low yesterday so I will keep her dose at 2.75 units - for now.
Hi Summer! I was just finally settling down and wanted to check in on Susie and you. She was quite yellow, but don't worry. She probably just ran high from the slight dose reduction last night. She will get back on track in the next few cycles. How is she behaving though. How was she today. I just hope her appetite is back?

It is interesting that he got diabetes while being fed a raw diet. My poor cat Simon, who developed the kidney disease, refused to eat wet food. I guess before I rescued him that was all he got. That is probably what caused the KD. Back then I didn't know much about the disease. I wish I would have tried harder to get him to eat wet food.

I'll have to look into the D-Mannose powder. Right now I am giving Susie milk thistle once a day in her food. If I mix it up good it doesn't seem to turn her off. She has had a really high ALT reading for months and the vet doesn't know what is causing it. She has other high numbers in her blood test which are listed in my labs. Her white blood cell count went up quite a bit with her April labs so my vet had her get to "back-to-back" convenia shots, 14 days apart, and we will do a mini chem on May 8th to see if her numbers have come down. Frustrating when the vet doesn't know what is wrong. She has had an ultrasound and xrays of her abdomen and nothing unusual was seen although he did not see her pancreas (?).

I did not know that about Fancy Feast but Susie really likes it. Love your comment about it being "Kitty Crack" I got a couple of samples of EZ Complete and mixed the first with cooked hamburger meat. Susie did not like it. I will try the other sample with ground turkey (cooked). I just don't think she would go for a raw/semi-raw diet as she never shows any interest in human chicken, turkey, beef, tuna, etc.

Thanks for all the info. Your Raven is doing well because you cared enough to learn about the diseases and how to best treat them.

Thank you, Sue. Susie really likes the PureBites Salmon freeze dried treats but if I'm looking for a high carb treat, just to raise her glucose a little, I keep the Temptations around. Will look into the Orijen treats.

Her appetite was better yesterday. Always is when she is higher. She has been acting fine although she was more sluggish on the day she was surfing. Maybe because she wasn't as hungry. I'm hoping with a lower than normal AMPS today (5/1) she will do some surfing again.
