I've been gone since noon. When I left, Linus was fine. I got in a hurry and ran out the door without a +3.5 test, but I had done a +2. He had an appetite this morning and was acting normal. Pierre was home from about 5:00 until 6:30, I asked him to try to get a test, he said as soon as he called him, Linus ran out the door.

When he got home at 8:45, he got a PMPS of 410. He couldn't get Linus to eat, not even trout. I got home about an hour later, Linus licked a little trout for me, but didn't eat any. Pierre went ahead and gave him 2u at 9:00, at 10:30 he is testing at 430. I added warm water to the food and he is still turning up his nose.

He keeps going back to the same spot and going to sleep. He's not talking to me, and barely purring.

No, I haven't gotten a ketone test - he isn't using his box because he can go outside. There was a wet spot this morning I stuck a test strip in, but I have no idea how old it was and it came back negative. His breath doesn't smell funny.

What should I do and how long should I wait? We are 30 miles from the nearest emergency vet. Can I call our vet first thing in the morning, or should I load him up and go to Boulder?

***UPDATE*** It's 11:45 pm. I gave him some water with a syringe, and he looked at me like I was crazy. I went into the laundry room and put some more water in the trout dish and gave him a bowl of spring water in case the well water is tasting funny. He licked some of the water out of the trout, and is now sitting in the kitchen grooming himself, so I guess he doesn't feel too awful. Just very weird that he's not eating. I'll check him through the night and update in the morning. I'm home tomorrow, so I can keep him inside and try to get a ketone test.

****UPDATE**** It's 11:55. All of a sudden after grooming himself, he's talking to me and demanding food. We went back to the food and he did eat some of both kinds that were there. BG is 197, so Jenn, you were right, it did drop. I'll still watch him tonight, but as of right now, chalk this up as a "HUH?" :?

Re: 4/30, Linus high, not eating

Try to get him to eat anything. Boil some chicken if you need to. Try some tuna, but wash it off. Some tuna is high in sodium. He has 2u in his system & hasn't eaten you need to get something in him. His numbers could really start to drop. Try to run sum test.
I don't know about ketones. Lu was telling me tonight that the breath would smell like finger nail polish or fruity.
He could be constipatated. Constipation will cause cats to not eat.
He could have pancreatitis.
He could be lots of different things.

I would keep a close eye on him. Do not let him outside. Do you have liter box? You need to be observing to see if he is going. This will be of the first questions the vet is going to ask you. When did he urinate last & BM & were they normal?

Re: 4/30, Linus high, not eating

Hi Sue, the board is quiet tonight so I thought I would answer .... you need a ketone test, has he had ketones? yes not eating is a major problem with a diabetic cat .... it sounds as if he has free reign, you need to stop that until you know what is going on.

Since I don't know the history I will give some basic stuff .... if you think he is really sick, take him to emergency. But if he has stopped eating just recently, you might be able to wait. Do you have meat baby food? sometimes a kitty will eat even if off their food. Find "something" he will eat .... get a ketone test! has he had DKA? if he has take him to emergency!! A kitty that has had DKA and has stopped eating, could go into DKA again! WHICH WE WANT TO AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!

You know your cat. Is he really sick or out of sorts? If he is really sick, take him to a vet. I would put him in a confined space and get a ketone test. Good luck! Also, not all cats have funny smelling breath.

Nancy and Payne ......

Re: 4/30, Linus high, not eating

Linus is great this morning! :o He ate all of the trout overnight, and is now chowing down on some Grammy's Pot Pie. His BG at +9.75 is . . .

194!!!

I expected the low last night because he didn't eat, but this is a nice surprise to wake up to.

I'm going to keep him in the house with me, and keep an eye on him until I get a ketone reading.

I have this whole FD thing figured out now . . . just stop feeding the cat. cat(2)_steam

 I thought the same thing about just not feeding.
Just goes to show how important it is to keep the carbs low.
Glad he is doing better today.
