pmps 262 well he is not wanting to eat as well tonight kinda pacing a lot I know its dry he wants I think I might have to fix him some canned mixed with tuna later to make sure he eats I kinda thought his numbers would be lower had a nice negative comment from one of my vets who said since he is a pure bred cat he has no chance to come off insulin and feeding him raw is a mistake and she went on and on and like my DH said why ask if all you are going to do is say bad things to me <sigh>...... work can be such a negative environment for me since I do not feel well anyway   Do Lou's vet that said neg things to me 2 weeks ago on the phone and we had not talked since he is the one who has a dog dying of liver cancer at least asked and I just said things were going well and he said did I need any advice from him right now and I said no and he just said he is there for me and left it at that and knows I am doing what I think is best for Do Lou

If there's any message from the story I posted today, it's that the vet doesn't necessarily have the whole or only truth! You're doing great, Lisa. I hope you can see from our story that great things can happen out of the toughest starts. Keep your spirits up, and congrats on switching food.

The first time I stopped dry was during our transition to wet, when I put the wet food out overnight, and was so tired that I forgot the put the dry down too. Kitty at the wet and never looked back!

Your vet's comments makes my blood boil. I immediately removed all dry food the day of diagnosis. Look thru my old posts, you will soon see how upsetting that whole experience was - but I never ever caved. Baby started as an over dose & thru Rebound City, CrAzY lows, etc. by far.. transitioning to wet food was the worst part of all this for us. She was a nightmare & would not eat...... I don't even want to think about the **** she put me thru. BUT we did it!!!

**Why does your Vet think feeding Raw is wrong? I am a huge advocate & just wonder....

I don't like vets who stay stupid things. I don't know any other way to say that.

Do Lou likely had a fur shot yesterday, now shed has refilled. If you can keep the dry away I think you'll be looking for a decrease soon. He doesn't need to go way low for a decrease -- we want to ease him down simultaneously with the diet changes.

My vets are very good vets in many ways I have worked there for almost 16 yrs BUT they are so backwards on so very very much I could go on and on about this none of them believe in raw and we have 11 there. They all consider it OMG you are giving salmonella to your cat nailbite_smile nailbite_smile I have used raw in the past for Voodoo when we showed him and for Do Lou years ago for a allergy trial which is how I got hooked up to primal. Yes I agree the switch in foods for me is the very worst he is pacing tonight and wanting dry really bad and if it were not me wanting soooo bad for him to maybe go OTJ one day I would give in to him but no I am not and yes its a struggle to get him to eat some days he does it great and others he just turns his nose up at the wet/raw. Thanks for your support Nicole its cats like Baby that give me inspiration and this entire board and the support I get here I would be lost without it now :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Do Lou, Resist my darling, by not eating dry you could have a poke/shot free life.
Lisa, Big hugs to you -- I know how hard it is for you to not succumb to his sweet longing eyes. Take it an hour at a time -- tell yourself you're not going to give in for an hour, then do the next hour, pretty soon you'll be asleep. Isn't it funny how we want to make them happy by giving them the dry -- we are willing to risk their health for it. It is tough.

Hi Lisa, I just got back and read about your day. You just have to put what the vets say out of your mind. You are doing the right thing for Do Lou. Already this evening he's down to a nice blue. He'll get used to not having the dry food and you will get great advice from D. about when to have your dosecrease. So give Do Lou a nice send-off to Kitty's party and have yourself a nice evening.

Thanks Ella its been hard to take the stand of ignoring the vets I work for since they have always been so great with my cats but I realize with FD and Do Lou that I had to take things into my own hands and do it the right way and not their way it was a turning point for me and so is the dry hard but I know its the right thing to do for him. Do Lou will see Stu at the party he is bringing catnip dip(carb free of course)

I think there can be a risk with any food. Just look at all of the food that was recalled last year because the food was killing cats. There seems to be at least one recall every year. The vets seem to take the contaminated food recalls in stride. I just took a look at Dr. Lisa's feline nutrition site and in her section on making raw food, she lists out all of the recalls and there are a ton of canned and dry foods that have been recalled due to salmonella contamination.

I make my own raw food. I didn't like the way the Nature's Variety looked -- I think it was freezer burned -- there were chunks of bone and gristle and the cats wouldn't eat it. They scarfed down the Feline's Pride, though, so I knew it wasn't an issue with raw. I didn't want to pay the shipping for Feline's Pride so I decided to grind my own chicken. I use a pre-mix for all of the necessary nutritional supplements. I figure that I significantly reduce the risk of contamination by not buying ground meat. I freeze the food in 1/4 cup patties so there's no issue with it spoiling in the refrigerator.

The bottom line is that vets get about as much training in nutrition as MDs get -- which is virtually none. Unless they do the reading and research on their own, what they probably learn post-vet school is from the sales reps from the big pet food manufacturers. I wonder if you asked your vet if he prescribes based on what the drug reps tell him or if he reads the research and goes to get continuing ed from non-drug company sponsored speakers. I would hope that he reads the research in order to decide what to prescribe. If vets are prescribing food, why haven't they approached reading the research with the same rigor as they would a drug?

Ok, I'm climbing down off of my soapbox....
