Of course now I wish I hadn't given her the shot. And I'm going to have to rely on her to surf - I have to get out the door to work. :arghh:
 
I'm still not sure I should have shot this morning. I thought 144 would be safe, but she'd puked while I was out and doesn't seem herself at the moment - she's hiding under the TV unit which isn't like Rosa at all. I'm wondering if she dropped a bit too far and, although she's back up now, she's just not feeling great.
 
Aww - she's still not feeling good. She's splitting her time between my lap and our bed now. Very, very subdued though - I don't like this, she hasn't acted like this in a while. :(
 
Me too - she was just sick again, but I think now it's because she doesn't want to eat. She did drink some water, and I gave her her shot...even with her numbers in the 100s or lower I'm terrified of DKA if she gets sick and doesn't get her insulin. Should I be testing for ketones tonight even though her numbers are way below anything that should cause a problem?
 
ketones aren't necessarily related to blood sugar levels. it's obvious when a cat is very high that they don't have enough insulin, but sometimes ketones can even appear in the 100's. if you're worried, i'd get a ketone test.

Have you tried giving her baby food? some kitties love it and it can go down easily. You want the ones with only meat and broth, no vegetables or sugars. Any more signs of vomit tonight?
 
Just a few minutes ago, but it looked to be more because she hasn't eaten. We do have pepcid in the house for Shadow (she has to have 1/4 of a pill once a day). Would it be worth trying Rosa with 1/4 to see if it would settle her tummy a bit? I can go get some baby food too and I will test her for ketones as soon as I get a chance.

If it was any of the other cats of course, I'd be sure it's a hairball and leave them to it - they all get them and they all go back to eating just fine a few hours later. But because it's Rosa, I'm really worried that there's something else going on that I haven't identified yet.
 
Ketones are far more common in cats with high numbers, but if you have any doubt it would be good to check her.

Sure it's fine to give her some pepcid in case it might help. Is it Pepcid AC? You need it, not Pepcid Complete. the dosage is 1/4 of a 10mg tablet twice a day if needed for an acid tummy. Chase it with some water, about 4-6 ml. Give it 30 minutes before a meal. It wouldn't hurt her and it might help.

I know - we worry far more about diabetic cats than civvies - they seem more fragile to me.
 
It is AC - I know we have to be careful when we buy it because the AC is fine for Shadow but the other one would hurt her. I figured it'd probably be fairly safe - I think we've both taken an occasional one out of the bottle too for ourselves so it's one of the things we use for everyone in the house, cat and human alike!. I'll try getting 1/4 of a pill into her and then try her with some baby food, see if I can get her eating. All that came up for her the last time was that kind of white foam which is why I'm thinking it might be acid now from not eating.

Regan does this all the time - she's dreadful for scarf-n-barf and for hairballs too. And I just clean it up and leave her to it. Maybe I worry too much about Rosa but it's only a few weeks ago that she really was that fragile - I don't want her slipping back at all if I can help it!
 
I'd think it's worth a try - others have said that the white foam is from an acid stomach. Punkin didn't have this issue so I didn't deal with it personally.
 
I did get 1/4 of a pill into her...in the end. After she hid under the TV and had to be pushed out, growling and hissing all the way. Then of course she tried to bite me while I was wrapping her in a towel (there's no other way to get a pill into this cat - never has been, probably never will be). Then she spat it out twice, but it went down in the end...and so did some water. On the good side, she's still feeling well enough to fight me on it. I'll give her a little while to settle herself and for the pill to hopefully settle her tummy then try her with some baby food - from what I can find that's meant to be in store locally it looks like Beech Nut either chicken and broth or turkey and broth might be the best brand. Can you confirm if that one's OK to use - I'm not familiar with US brands of baby food.
 
This isn't my area of expertise - I know the main thing is you want just meat and broth, and no onions or garlic, no sweeteners or starches. I think there might be cornstarch in some of them but even so the carbs aren't high enough to be a problem.

I know people use Beech Nut as one of the options, but I'm not certain of the exact stage.

Let me tag @Wendy&Neko to see if she can clarify. It's been years since I had to give baby food and I just don't remember the exact details - not to mention that the food has probably changed since 2013.

I have a jar of beechnut classics in Skooter's aresenal..others have used Gerbers....some cats are particular (go figure) over which one they will eat....

As Julie said, you just want to make sure the only ingredients is the meat source and the broth....
 
Thank you :) I'm going to go get it now - I can't get her +2 test because she's hiding under the bed and growling and lashing out at anyone who tries to touch her. I hope she'll come out for the baby food and then I can get a test on her too - she's scaring me at the moment. :(

I'm actually starting to think it might be pancreatitis - not something I wanted to have to deal with, but if she's no better in the morning I'm going to call the vet and get her an appointment - I'm sure they'll see her the same day if I say she doesn't want to eat.
 
If you're having the test done for pancreatitis, the spec fPL, it's most accurate if the cat has fasted. So if you have to take her in tomorrow keep that in mind. Marje's Primer on Pancreatitis is at the bottom of the New to the Group sticky post.
 
Ahh - I didn't know that - thank you for telling me. I'll call them as soon as they open before she gets her breakfast then if I need to. We did manage to get a +2 in the end - Michael looked under the bed and she ran away from him, then I caught her at the other side. 114, so I'm good to leave her to go get the baby food - see if I can get her eating something!
 
Apparently the baby food might just be acceptable - though I'm only letting her have a little at a time for now until I see how she's going to get on with it. She's eating it happily enough from a spoon though - I'm glad I don't have to syringe it into her :)
 
Oh, I am. There's been a bit of trouble though - all the other cats want some too! I keep trying to explain to them that they have cat food and only Rosa needs this but you know how that goes. ;) Good thing I bought a few jars of it - there's enough for everyone to have a taste :) It really is great to see Rosa eating again - I know it was only a few hours, but when I'm so aware of how delicate the balance between fine and really ill can be with a diabetic, it's worrying just the same.
 
So far she's eaten quite a lot (spoon-fed of course like the precious little princess she thinks she is ;) ). And so far (anti-jinx) it's stayed down. :) I've only given her a little bit at a time (she'd have eaten more but I didn't want to overload her system all at once). Is it safe to see if she'll eat a little of her regular lc food now so that I can decide if I need to give her a bit more of the baby food before bed or should I keep her off her regular food until the morning?
