Hi all,

Lately it's been a struggle to draw blood from Junior for the last hour. He's not bleeding well and when I finally get blood, the readings are off and I try to retest. He's hissing and biting and I'm not sure what to do at this point. Would it be better to wait? He's hungry and cranky.

Grrrr

Re: 4/29 Junior - struggling w/AMPS

You could try giving him a treat before you test.

Are you warming his ear? Either use a sock filled with a couple of teaspoons of rice that you heat for a few seconds in the microwave. Or, if you rub the edge of Junior's ear, that may work. Ears, as you continue to poke, will enrich the capillary bed and begin to bleed more easily. It takes a while though. If you need to double poke, try to poke very close to where your first poke was. That may help to increase the size of the droplet.

The treat went a loooong way! I really earned every penny getting this reading in today but I'm also very happy that his AMPS is 308, his lowest AMPS ever!

Thank you Sienne!

Hi guys ... yay on that low pink!! Sorry to hear you guys had a rough morning with testing, but hopefully now with treats on board it will get much easier .. soon the ears will learn to bleed and there won't be a problem .. have a great weekend guys!

you're bonnie, right? if i have the wrong name, sorry!

just saw your post on the main forum about junior and his dose - and i was wondering if you've checked to see if he needed a dental? i hope i'm not repeating myself, but when i read your post i thought i should come and mention it. if junior has any underlying condition or infection it can be impossible to get control of their BG.

Hi Julie!

Yes, my name is Bonnie. Nice to meet you and thank you for pointing the dental out to me!

I saw the thread on dental in the other forum and it did make me think. Junior's dental is HORRENDOUS, even before he was diagnosed with diabetes. Yellow tartar, red gums...I'm sure it's painful. He used to get more frequent cleanings. At his last one in December, the vet said Junior's heart was so faint from the anesthesia that he pulled him out of it. So no dental work done.

I'm just afraid that it's not in the cards for him and that he'll be stuck with higher BG numbers. :-(

Bonnie
