Just dropped off poor Donovan at the vet's again to have his dental. Hopefully no screw ups this time. Donny's PMBG has been 130-ish the past week. Will update more on him and Butthead later. There was too much other stuff going on in LL last week for me to feel up to talking more about Butthead.

Think happy good teeth thoughts for Donny pls... :-|

Re: 4/29 Donovan/Butthead update

Just called the vet and they said everything went OK (whatever that means) and I'm going to pick Donny up in a few hours. Now I gotta get a bunch of stuff done at work so I can leave early. Back later.

Your kind words truly inspire and uplift me. Thank you.

i echo everyone's comments - i look forward to reading about both of your babies & cheering them on.

have you ever heard the swedish proverb “Shared joy is a double joy; shared sorrow is half a sorrow”

Re: 4/29 Donovan/Butthead update

Well, things went OK for Donovan... for now.

The vet cleaned his teeth as well as he could but did not do more than that. He's got a mouth full of resorptive lesions and a cracked tooth, and recommends that ALL of his teeth be removed. This is not his area of expertise, so he gave me info on a place that specializes in feline dentistry (www.veterinarydental.com - anyone know about this place?). He also noticed a heart murmur in Donovan for the first time. That, his recent blood work results, and his diabetes (though controlled for now) all make the surgery more complicated :-|

Though Donny was still loopy when I picked him up, once home he went straight for the food bowls despite my showing him the discharge instructions that he shouldn't eat for several hours  He hasn't hurled, so hopefully that means he's doing OK. PMBG was 111.

I brought Butthead along when I picked up Donovan to [1] check his weight (down ~2 lbs since August), and [2] to see if I can continue his pred prescription through him instead of having to get it in Boston. For now the vet in Boston called in a prescription for a human-type pred until I can get a refill for the animal version locally. Smells kinda fruity-cherry :?. Butthead hesitated eating it mixed in with the baby food, but eventually ate it.

About Butthead and the pred... I was actually rather irritated that his oncologist gave him 10 days' worth of medicine and then said come back in 2 weeks for a recheck. Apparently (and I did not know this) you're not supposed to stop that stuff cold turkey, so he had been off it for about 5 days . I didn't rip her a new one since she had basically just told me his treatments were done, there was nothing else to do, see ya later, but call us if you need anything. I was trying to deal with that bitter reality first and foremost. The sudden lack of pred might explain why I felt Butthead had shown a visible decline, however. Yet this morning he was actually surprisingly alert and perky, purring, doing his little silent meows. Other times he wanders around looking a bit confused. Who knows what it means. Though he is thinner and weaker (but eating constantly), he's still mostly kinda doing Butthead-type things. I don't like that he doesn't sit with me like he used to - don't know if that position is now uncomfortable for him or what. He has recently taken to sleeping under my bed, from which it would be extremely difficult to retrieve him; but so far he has always reacted and come out willingly when I call him. Is this considered "hiding" behavior that animals do when they feel their time is coming? I'd rather not think about it that way, but perhaps it is...

This is the first time I've written about him like this, and I must say it really really hurts.

Re: 4/29 Donovan/Butthead update

Dont think the worst...Copper's behavior has changed in such a short time, but every now & then he does something so HIM, that i give a half smile...Like you told me, he doesnt know he's sick..If he is eating, that's such a good sign.
Hang in there, there are always other vets to consult..Glad Donovan is home & safe.
Life just seems to get more & more complicated-
Sending Blessings, Prayers, and healing vines--Comforting Hugs from us!!

Re: 4/29 Donovan/Butthead update

Golly, MJ, It's very late and I can't write much now, but I just wanted to say that sleeping under your bed and responding to you is definitely NOT hiding. Butthead may just want to be near you but not on top of you.

Wishing you all the best for Donny's teeth and hoping that you can work out Butthead's meds with the vets. You have a lot on your plate. Sending you strength and positive thoughts. :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Re: 4/29 Donovan/Butthead update

Forgot to mention that last week at Angell, the vet showed me some swelling in Butthead's lower right mouth under his tongue, likely due to the tumor on that side of his head. She asked if he had trouble eating or had been drooling, and I said No, but of course later that same day I saw drooly bits hanging off that side of his mouth as he was eating. He has always been a very sloppy eater ever since he was a kitten, so when he pushed his food around and made a mess I didn't think that much of it. He has been getting a lot of babyfood and liquid from canned fuds. He really likes that and is easier for him to eat. I am concerned that this is not a complete diet and I should be adding supplements. Anything in particular or should I just go to Petco and grab something?

Today Donovan is eating like an absolute PIG (that is, more than usual). Trying to make up for his fuds deprivation yesterday I guess

(((MJ))) I am going through this now with Emily, and I can feel your worry and pain, just like my own. I think that his willingness to eat is very encouraging, as is his responding to your voice, and feeling perky. (((Butthead))).

(((((((MJ)))))))))) (((((((Donovan))))))))) ((((((((((Butthead)))))))))))

I hate to say some of these things but I'd rather say it than not.

I wish I could help with Butthead. I know you guys are fighting an uphill battle and I just wish for so much more time with him.

Regarding Donovan, his Dad was Maine coon right? Someone emailed me yesterday about Maverick's sudden departure: "You said he had Maine Coon in him, and Maine Coons are known to carry HCM in higher incidence than other cats. And sometimes, sadly, the HCM shows no symptoms until something tragic happens like what happened with Maverick. " When he had his second emergency surgery to repair the PEG tube/stomach tear a few years ago, they detected a murmer. But no other vet had picked it up before. He was very weak and sick with liver failure/low potassium etc. I wish I knew that Main Coon's could have heart trouble, I would have had a workup done on him.

Saving up lots of hugs. Wish I could give you a real one. Hang in there MJ.

Re: 4/29 Donovan/Butthead update

My vet did mention that Donovan might need a cardio eval as well. We shall see. Since I have another cat (a foldie) who has had a murmur for quite a few years, I believe he would have noticed it in Donny as well if he had it before now.

A couple of hours ago I took videos of Butthead outside, and Donovan as well. I kept the clips to ~2-3 min to make uploading and viewing easier. Here's the first one.

"Butthead goes for a stroll and eats grass"

(please note that Butthead is nekkid b/c I trust him not to run off, and I was right there with him)

Re: 4/29 Donovan/Butthead update

Butthead joins Donovan but they go off in opposite directions:

Re: 4/29 Donovan/Butthead update

Butthead is still looking for that squirrel and eats more grass (brief cameo by civvie Lilly)

Re: 4/29 Donovan/Butthead update

Donovan, then Butthead goes back for that squirrel:

Re: 4/29 Donovan/Butthead update

Butthead heads back to the house and runs into Lilly

Thank you so much for sharing these videos. He is just a gentle doll. Wish I could hug him in real life. Lilly is a little sweetie!!!!

He looks good on his stroll. ((((MJ Butthead))))

 thanks... Butthead really seemed to enjoy himself. He wanted to go out again shortly afterward. You might notice at his backend his feet kinda angle outward and he walks like he's wearing a loaded diaper. This is not how he used to walk. His rear legs are getting weaker.

Lilly showed up on our doorstep almost 2 years ago as a tiny wild kitten with who we assume is her father, a stray we call Stinky b/c he's an intact male stray and well, when he sprays, it STINKS. She's the spitting image of him. He still comes around and she does *not* like him. Lilly remains a bit feral and spazzy at times, but she sure came to the right place. She'll even let Donovan mount her now and then when he gets in one of those moods  (Donny forgets he doesn't have those parts anymore...)

Hi Mj - thanks for posting the videos - they are beautiful kitties! what fun they are.

I hope you a re doing OK. I wish I could help/advice on Donny - quite the dental report. I hope that it works out OK for him. I think of you guys all the time. Many hopes here for all of you.

I loved watching the videos. Butthead has the sweetest face EVER!! I had watched a video you made of him eating baby food out of the jar and fell in love with him then. He's got the look that makes me want to hug the stuffing out of him  You've made me realize, too, that I need to start making some videos of my Champers so I have memories for later.

Sorry to hear Donovan will need some more dental work but glad he's home now and getting over his procedure. It's good the vet didn't try to do more than he was comfortable doing.

Butthead is such a sweetie.

Thanks for the update and the wonderful videos. Butthead certainly seems to enjoy his strolls. Nice that Donovan is recovering from the dental good luck if more needs to be done.

Great videos, such sweethearts..Copper is eating baby food, kitten food, lots of chicken & cheese, sometimes temptations..I just give him whatever he wants & will eat,..Copper came in my lap tonite, which he hasnt done fo a while..I'm just playing it all by ear like you told me.
Big Hugs from Us, hope tomorrow will be a better day!

MJ I just love and look forward to your videos. I am going to start doing some of my own. I have some nice camera equipment and have done "photo shoots" with the boys but not a lot of video. I hope you dont think this is weird but I just want to hug Butthead. He is so sweet and he seems like such a cuddler, I think it is those beautiful eyes. All your kitties are beautiful and special but I dont know, there is just something about Butthead.... cat_pet_icon

Yes, there is definitely something about Butthead. You just want to squish him and hug him and kiss him all the time. I have so *so* many photos of him, but not much video. Wish I had started it sooner...

Today I picked up his methyl pred that a local compounding pharmacy was able to make up. The temporary substitute pred smelled fruity and he hesitated eating it mixed in with his baby food. No hesitation tonight  Donovan, however, will NOT take his Clavamox mixed with food anymore, so I told him Fine, we'll do this the hard way then. I squirt it in his mouth. A couple of weeks of this twice a day . Thankfully he's pretty easy to medicate, but tonight he activated his special cloaking device and made me search for him. Also need to get moving on the dental issues with him. The place my vet recommended requires recent (within a month) bloodwork for the consultation, and his was done April 18.

Thanks again for all of the support. I'm here, but haven't felt like saying much lately... :-|

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, I hate the special cloaking device!

Hi (((((MJ, Butthead, Donovan)))))

You Furbabies clearly love the home AND yard you provide them. I continue to keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers. (more on FB)

Missing Witty.

thank you...
I think things are progressing faster than I had hoped.
Butthead is having more trouble eating, and is getting less steady on his feet.
I hate this so much

MJ,
know that i always keep you, Butthead and Donovan in my thoughts and prayers....i know you are hating the changes you see in Butthead but try not to concentrate too much on how he is changing but rather on the fact that he is here another day with you....cherish that and each moment you have with him...for we don't know what tomorrow will bring....

i love love love the videos....reminds me when i used to take Rocket to the dog off leash park....obviously he would be on a leash while Comet would be off the leash.....he thought he was a dog :) but DH and i made sure we would take him when no other dogs would be around....it was his treat of walking on the grass thinking he owned the park!...as you know we are in a highrise bldg....

enjoy every minute you have with your furbabies....their unconditional love to you is the greatest gift they can give you!

((((hugs to all))))
