hi everyone! Just did auroras first ever test at home with the relion micro and I got a reading of 123 is this a good number? I usually give her 3 units of insulin after she eats dinner. I'm going to feed her now and hopefully someone can tell me what's next. Very excited and proud of myself!

THANK HEAVEN you're testing!!!! GREAT JOB by the way!!!! Do you think you can do another one just to be sure that 123 is right? A new number should be close, not exact but within a few points up or down.

With so little data, I would skip shot tonight. I'm not a Lantus user but some information applies to new members for all insulins. We don't have any other number history for Aurora.

Oops sorry Yong...I now remember you're Prozinc... :) THANK YOU for responding anyway! HUG

Thanks everyone! Ok so she ate dinner and she was a little upset that I had to test her a second time but she was a trooper. Tomorrow morning at 6am I will check her again I have to leave the house early by 615 am. What would be the range of numbers that would come up that would signal me to shoot after she eats breakfast? I should be home by 1pm and I can check her again. Wow that was super easy I'm shocked that I did this on my first attempt.

Nicole, knowing you're new, this was your first test and you were shooting a large dose and we truly had no other information, I tagged people to help as I can't stay. We aren't going to leave you alone right now for more than a few minutes. You'll likely need to test later tonight to be sure she's not going lower. She's still FINE!!! She's now better than fine - you can test!

Your signature says you're weaning off kibble? Probably skip to help drain the depot and lower dose for next time. Hopefully you get some more input to figure out a safer dose to give next time.
If you can, try testing earlier tomorrow AM, like an hour or 30min before a shot is due so that you will have time to get some advice on what to do. That's a large dose, if you're cutting carbs she probably doesn't need so much anymore.

Right now you don't have enough information to know anything about shooting tomorrow morning. Maybe others have suggestions...

Edit to add: reread that above, sounded sort of snippy....wasn't meant that way...

Yes absolutely it's 8pm Chicago time I will test again at 930 before bed. NO insulin was given tonight. Gosh it was meant to be that I got the supplies today seems like we might have had big trouble on our hands if I didn't. Thanks again everyone! I'm feeling confident about this now!

Well I stopped free feeding kibble but she still gets some on top of her wet food. I will be up tomorrow at 5am so I can check then before I start to get ready and post her reading.

Oh it DEFINITELY was meant to be!!! Trouble with Lantus is the depot that's already there will continue to give the body insulin for days. I'm a bit concerned she may still react by going lower tonight.

Your post just appeared - yes please post number in the morning. If by some wild chance someone's not here by the time you need to shoot, and someone doesn't come along with a better suggestion, do not give a dose if she's still under 200. Even if you do shoot, only give half that dose just to be safe right now. That shouldn't happen but just in case...test and post when you get back at 1pm.

HUGE BIG HUG - you just did a LOT more than just your first test!!!!!

I'm smiling and very proud. My two girls are my everything we dont have kids and there isn't anything I wouldn't do for them! Thank you all so so so much I have tears in my eyes I'm so greatful and humbled by how kind everyone is here!

We all 'get it'....we all had the same tears and feeling when we landed here...it's a special place and it's 'family'. I need to step away for a while and shoot Dakota, start all the dogs out in their required shifts, go put elderly neighbor to bed. I'm CST also, I'll check on you about 9:15 or so...

There'll likely be others join before then.

Yes spreadsheet! Put any vet numbers you know in it - just note in comments area that they are from vet...

BIG HUG!

Hi Nicole, and welcome to Lantus & Levemir Land - the nicest place you never wanted to be.

Good job testing before shooting and waiting for a response. As Lyresa said, with so little data, it's kind of soon for you to be shooting anything under 150. Normally we ask you to stall (don't feed) and retest after thirty minutes to see if she's rising. Since you did retest and she was going down, I think skipping was a good decision.

I need to go read your initial post before I ask questions you've already answered. It will help us a lot when you get your spreadsheet set up. If you have any trouble doing so, don't hesitate to ask for help.

Meanwhile, here's a post that might help you figure out the Board and how to get the most from it: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/updated-tips-for-new-members.173572/

Don't panic if you get a really high number in the morning, or even later tonight. It would be helpful if you can do your morning test a little early - say 15 minutes before you want to shoot - so if she is low and you need to ask if you should shoot, you have time to wait for an answer. Be sure to indicate in your subject line for tomorrow's condo (start a new one in the morning and link this one to it) that you are stalling, it that is what happens, so people will understand you need help right away.

Just got back from reading your initial post, and here are my thoughts:

Regarding syringe disposal, check with your local pharmacy and see if they sell Sharps containers. Look online to see what your state's rules regarding needle disposal are and where you can turn in the container when it is full (many vets and hospitals will take them) OR you can get the wonderful device someone else mentioned, the BD Safe Clip for about $7 at Walmart and you can just thrown the needleless part of the syringe away. One of those devices lasted me for five years, and about 8 months of that was with two diabetic cats!

Regarding the food you're feeding, have you seen Dr. Lisa Pierson's site, Catinfo.org? She has a ton of great info there, including tips on transitioning kibble addicts to wet, as well as a fabulous Food Chart that list carbs and calories, among other values. That will help you find foods that are under 10% carbs but lower in calories for your precious girl.

As far as the vet issue goes, many of us have dealt with similar issues. We have developed a technique called "nod and smile" that we employ whenever the subject of FD comes up. You don't have to volunteer info, and you don't have to follow her instructions for handling FD. It's YOUR cat. Still, if you like the vet otherwise, it's good to try to keep a good relationship with her. My suggestion would be to wait until you've gotten a little more experience, and some data on your spreadsheet, and then show her the sheet and the results you're getting. If that doesn't win her over, go with "nod and smile". ;)

We recommend you try to read all the stickies at the top of the Lantus and Levemir page. Don't worry - we know they are packed with info and you can quickly get overwhelmed. We were all new and scared once, too. Just ask lots of questions and keep up the good work -you're off to a great start!

Hi Tricia! Thanks! I will check her again in about 30 minutes and post before going to bed. I will be up early tomorrow and will check her around 515am and will post and I will check again once I'm finished getting ready to leave and post again before and see what you all think.
I just saw your other post, all great information! Thanks! I am pretty sure the foods are okay but I will spend more time this weekend going over each type I have and will check in on that once I correct information. I noticed that the group says wet food but NO gravy what's the deal on gravy and why is that bad?
I agree with you on the nod and smile and I might have to not tell her everything initially. I'm supposed to take Aurora for another curve test in afew weeks but I think I'll save the money and skip that. I guess I'd have to come clean at that point and provide her with the information I have from my spreadsheet. I am disappointed that she didn't have me home testing thank goodness I tested tonight!

Just remember, try not to give her any food two hours before that first test (we call it AMPS, and evening is PMPS - morning preshot and evening preshot). That way we know her BG is not influenced by food.

Yes I realized I already didn't name my first post correctly. lol tomorrow am I will post with tomorrow's date and Amps in front of the number I get. I'll get there, slowly but surely!

gravy is higher carb to answer that question. Usually made with flour of some type....
we use gravy when we need to boost numbers.

By the way, Welcome to FDMB.

I just love Aurora's face.....

Ok now it's showing 90 at 9:27pm
I might need to try the rice in a sock and warm that up method had a harder time getting blood this time.

Can you get another test in an hour?

Since you are feeding some dry food you would follow SLGS and a reduction has been earned. Normally that wooukd mean the new dose is 2.75 but I think you should go down to no more than 2.5 because your vet jumped from 2 to 3 units and you can't monitor tomorrow. See what others say.

I have a 5k race tomorrow morning need to get to bed is there anything I need to worry about the rest of the night or should I give her more food now before bed?

phooey.... I had a whole other post and I don't see it here now....

So glad you found us.

Definitely give her some food.....
we'd all like to see her heading up a bit more.....

She scarfing down the wet food and there is some dry kibble in her dish for a small middle of night snack

I'll be looking for you tomorrow morning. I will be up at 7 mst.
We might all be asking you to go back to 2 units until we can get that spreadsheet and you can get a little more testing going.
Those numbers help us.....
With lantus, the dose is determined by the lowest number in the cycle, not the high numbers.....

I'd like to see a bigger picture of her face.
I have two black and whites.... one with a divided face too....
