Sending out positive  BG vines and to all and feel better vines to all that need them

Zeke's previous condo

Yesterday I mentioned that my DH had had to deal with some Zekey behavioral problems. I do on occasion as well but not to the extent that my DH experienced this past week. This morning Zeke was a very calm, cool little kitty until the +2 test. He was amorously rubbing on my arm and then the dreaded love bite to the inside of the upper arm . Of course, I jerked and yelled out “Hey, that hurt” to which Zeke responded with a very nasty and forceful wide open mouth HISS.

What the….? That Zekey – he can be such a little psycho sometimes.

Well Zekey, Ivan and Mia are still battling the diarrhea. I would describe the current state of poo as pudding poo. They’re going on 3 days with this issue. They’ve had two days of fortiflora. So far, not sure we’ve seen much improvement. We’ll give it one more day. Zeke and Mia seem to be taking it in stride. They're still as active as they normally are and the appy's the same as well.

Mr. Ivan (Mia’s littermate) went into heart failure last July (same month Zeke dx’d with FD; obviously not a good month for us, to say the least), after having received injections of DepoMedrol and covenia, and was diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy. He’s currently on Furosemide and Enalapril (daily) and cerenia (every other). At that time he’d lost about 2 lbs in less than 2 weeks (from 16.8 to 14.10 lbs). He has continued to lose weight and at his vet appointment last weekend was 12.5 lbs. Due to all the weight loss within the last year, we try to monitor his weight very closely. Unfortunately with this latest bout of diarrhea, Ivan has not wanted to eat much the past 24 hours. We’re concerned, and will be even much more so if his appy doesn’t improve soon. We're worried about adding any appy enticements as they may aggregate his diarrhea. Even the fortiflora didn’t help this morning. Any suggestions?

Well yesterday I started giving Zeke a +8/+9 snack (both AM & PM) in an effort to bring down his PSBGs. His PSBG was still higher than his BG at snack time. Do I just continue giving the snack and only discontinue if his PSBGs start to trend up from how they’d been prior to introduction of the snack? Does it sometimes time a few days before the benefit of the snack starts to show up?

Here's a recap of today and what’s been going on with Zeke the last week.

Re: 4/27 Zeke AMPS 108 (poo issues still)

I'd keep the snack going for a while, Laura. Both yesterday's pmps and today's amps were under 120. That's meeting your goal. Seems to me like it might be working. Give it a few days.

re the poo issues, the fact that 3 of them have it makes it sound like something communicable. We had good luck with metronidazole when nothing else worked. It is an anti-fungal, but apparently something in that drug also helps heal the gut lining. If you haven't tried it, you might ask the vet if you can get enough for all 3 cats for a week or so. You obviously don't want kitties losing any more weight, especially Ivan. There are also high calorie supplements that can be added to prevent weight loss. i don't have experience with them, but I think Dyana uses one with JD occasionally - if i'm remembering correctly it might be called Max Cal, but don't take my word on it, ask her.

Re: 4/27 Zeke AMPS 108 (poo issues still)

Metronidazole (Flagyl) is effective in dealing with anerobic bacteria which can cause diarrhea. You'll need an Rx from your vet for it. It's also helpful to make sure that there aren't any parasites that could be causing the problem. (They may want you to bring a stool sample.)

You could also try a more powerful probiotic. ReNew Ultimate is one that several people have used. It's available at Whole Foods and GNC. You start with 1/3 of a capsule twice a day.

Did your vet suggest you pay attention to the amount of sodium in Ivan's food? One of the issues with heart failure is that salt causes fluid retention which makes the heart work harder. It's why he's being prescribed furosimide (Lasix) -- it's a diuretic. If you have a choice between a food with higher or lower sodium, opt for the one with lower sodium.

Re: 4/27 Zeke AMPS 108 (poo issues still)

Thanks Sienne and Julie for this information. We feed Ivan predominately Wellness Turkey Grain-free (same as Zeke), and FF classic turkey & giblets feast. The percent sodium is not included in Dr Lisa's food chart nor on Wellness or FF websites. Where might I find this information? Is there a list available with the sodium information included?

Re: 4/27 Zeke AMPS 108 (poo issues still)

I was going to also suggest metronidazole. I've definitely used it in the past when I've had more than one cat at a time develop liquipoo. Your vet should be able to prescribe it right away.

I was wondering if Zeke is having a difficult time with your DH shooting because could your DH possibly not be inserting the syringe properly? The bevel must be up or else the sharpest end does not go in first and it can be painful. Just a thought. I hope things improve!!!

Here are Tanya's Food Data Tables Inc Sodium. These charts were designed for cats with CKD and stress phosphorus levels but also sodium because CKD cats are prone to high BP. They should help you find some lower sodium foods for Ivan.

Re: 4/27 Zeke AMPS 108 (poo issues still)

Thanks Marje for your response and food information. I'll check with my DH regarding the bevel. I've mentioned this to him in the past but sometimes he doeasn't listen to me.

So, to what maximum percent should I try and limit Ivan's sodium intake?
