The past 2 mornings Yum has awakened totally focused on avoiding me and her preshot poke. Yesterday evening I was able to take a PMPS+3 and cuddle with her. This morning I had to chase and catch her just to feed her and give her insulin. She is terrified of me. I will go out and buy some of the neosporin plus lidocaine that some of you use. You apply it after the poke, correct? I hope it will help. She didn't really seem to mind the pokes before. Maybe now that her numbers are lower she feels more strongly about objecting. I don't know. I can't figure it out.

You want the 'ointment', not the cream. You can put it on afterward but it may be a bit greasy when you next test but that's fine - the blood will bead up on top of the greasy layer. The cream makes it soak into the hair which is why you don't want that...

Treats after tests....treats make everything OK... :) Freeze dried chicken, shrimpies = good stuff!

Thanks. Yay! I bought the ointment over the cream earlier, after agonizing in the aisle for 5 minutes. Fewer inert ingredients; extra antibiotics. Glad to hear I can poke through it later. I was able to pick her up and test at AMPS+6, no problem. Maybe she has nightmares about ear pokes overnight. She is totally freaked out and afraid of me in the morning. I gave her a freeze-dried treat without a poke this morning and she threw it up. Maybe she senses my anxiety, although I am careful to prattle away in a calm soothing voice. We'll figure it out.

Keep giving her a treat without poking, so she doesn't only associate it with bad things. You might just rub her ears, then give her the treat when she lets you. Another good option is plain, boiled chicken. My cats loved it.

She can absolutely pick up on your stress. Easy to say, but try hard to relax before you approach her, and keep your voice low and soothing. Maybe even play some soothing music.

I applied the Neosporin every night after the last poke of the day, then wiped it off in the morning before AMPS. Worked like a charm.

This does get easier - I promise!

Thanks for the Neosporin dosing schedule. She freaked out all by herself this morning before breakfast. I stayed patient and calm and we got a test done 20 minutes after breakfast. Better than nothing.
