Early morning for George, hes still very sleepy!

4/25/2026 George - AMPS 184 dose .75 - +3 118 - +5 135 - PMPS 135 - +2 117

Oh! Also I got into contact with my vet yesterday. They were not happy that I changed his dose and im pretty sure they were threatening to have George taken away because their wording was "if something were to happen to George from you not following our reccomendations, you could be held liable" and now im really worried and scared. They are aware im taking advice from this forum, but im worried im doing something wrong. Can they take away George because im adjusting his dosage? Am I doing something wrong?

That is….insane. You can change vets anytime you want — by all measures you are going above and beyond for George. I know I’m not an expert here but I have never heard anything so ridiculous in my life!! It is so clear how much you love George based on your questions and absolute adoration.

I wasnt sure if it was them threatening me or not, I dont read into tone very well, but their wording implies that they would take action for me not doing their reccomendations. They also said the same thing after I declined to put him on prescription food because he is doing so well on the fancy feast LC

I’m not sure I would keep seeing this vet but I don’t have any knowledge of any vet doing this.

Hopefully one of the more seasoned folks here can offer you guidance.

I’m awfully sorry — a “bad” pet parent wouldn’t be doing any of the things you are.

Give George smooches!! You got this 😻

I think it’s time to change vets.
I don’t believe they can take him away. I think legally pets are considered “property” and they can’t take your property without your permission.

I hope they cant, because i feel like im doing everything in my power to keep George happy and healthy, and thats why I came to this forum for help, I needed another perspective. I also know my vets are sponsored by purina and science diet to reccomend the prescription diets, I work for the pet store that the vet is in, hence why i go to them. I know theyre sponsored because we in the pet store also get sponsored to reccomend specific brands (commission for the company, not us unfortunately. I dont go based off of sponsorships for my reccomendations, I go based off of facts and the individual pets need) so im wondering if i upset them by declining the prescription diet because in all honesty I cannot afford such small bags at high prices, and his BG is doing so well on the fancy feast

You are doing what's best for George and he's doing so well. I think you should look for a new vet cause clearly this one doesn't care about George's well being. This vet reminds me of my old vet ,who would hang up on me when I would tell him I'm not gonna follow his advice and will do what's best for Nestle.
Both of them can go sit on a pinecone 🤬🤭🍍

I also do not think they can take George away from you. I'm in Canada so our laws are different but maybe someone from the state of New York could chime in? @Tim & Pookey

You're doing a wonderful job and it shows in his numbers. Keep going 💪 ✨🐈‍⬛💕

I have no idea but that sounds crazy to me! The only thing I can think of is maybe they’re worried about the legal side of things? Like if you were irresponsible with his treatment and then you went to them like what the heck you said this was okay. But that’s not the situation…

I also dont appreciate them treating me as if i dont know what theyre talking about/i dont work there/i dont know what their true intention is (im theorizing their true intention is to upsell me cat food considering how adimant they are at mentioning it). My entire job/staff force treats me like I am inferior because I have autism and struggle to understand certain concepts when theyre explained in a way that isnt directly understandable, but i run a department full time. I understand that they are vets and they are the professionals but I also have been doing my research clearly and I dont think they fully understand that 😔 I just hope they dont try to claim im neglecting George, I love him dearly and even though hes old I still want him comfortable and happy

I'm sorry that's happening to you  I've read a lot of posts here and this type of thing does happen. I think that's why a lot of us have switched vets, or stopped going to the vet for input on the diabetes management. It's a bummer but I try to remember, the majority of caregivers the veterinarians see are probably not as dedicated or research-oriented as we are. So they hear you're doing your own research and don't want anything to do with it as a default response. I'm sure there are other factors that come into play too. Even my current vet does not really care to hear about what I'm doing with his diabetes - it's more of a "everything good?" and I go "yep".

Definitely don't feel bad for making decisions regarding George's care! When I first started the diabetes journey, I felt so guilty and scared for going against the vet's dosage guidance (which would have no doubt resulted in an emergency hypo visit or worse). Diabetes is a very dynamic condition that sometimes requires daily decisions to manage their levels. Unless they are offering to be on call 24/7 to advise, it would be untenable to only follow their guidance.

I ended up switching vets after I lost trust in him and currently have a vet that is totally okay with me managing his diabetes 100%. She merely asks how he's doing in regards to that.

Was the vet concerned that you changed his dose from the 3 units at the beginning of his diagnosis?
Zach, you can look at George's numbers--they don't lie. George is beginning to see some really nice numbers that I think are leading him to regulation. You are not doing anything wrong with your cat--you are doing your best to help George experience more normal blood glucose numbers, and that is healing to his body.

They were upset that I did not follow their reccomendations and consulted a second and third opinion (another vet I contacted and this forum as the other opinions), claiming that what im doing is "dangerous" and that "theyre the professionals". It was frankly very insulting and upsetting to me because I work with these people

I see. Well, I understand why you would feel insulted and upset, especially since you are doing your best caring for George! Again, the numbers don't lie; George is doing well so far under your care. You are careful to ask questions here on the forum, and you listen to advice (from folks with years of experience). If you choose to stay with your vet, I might show them George's spreadsheet, if you haven't already, so that they can see how well he is doing. Invite them to the forum! We have nothing to hide here. I can assure you that you are doing more to care for George than the average caregiver who only knows to rely on the limited guidance that his/her vet is providing, which essentially means going to the vet's office once a month for blood glucose testing.

I find it ludicrous they think you were endangering George when leaving him at 3u bid would have caused him to hypo and potentially die if you didn’t catch it. Perhaps tell them that & you would have been happy to file a complaint against them.

I agree it’s time to find a new vet & certainly one who sees you as a partner in George’s care. He’s doing really well now all due to YOU! I also find it very rude that they treat you like that. I have not noticed any difference in your comprehension than other new members; in fact, I feel you are really on top of it MORE than most new members.

One quick note: I’m not sure why Bron asked you to put the current dose in the subject line but we don’t normally do that so I edited it for you. You don’t need it there but thanks for responding to her concern.
