AMPS - 247, gave 0.5 U

Her appetite was a little less last night (wasn't up on the counter grazing too much); and even this morning, she came up, ate about 1/4 can FFLC, and went onto patio. Has not come back in to pick at food at all. Hope this is a good thing, and not the start of something bad. She is not skinny, possibly a little overweight. But, just a little out of the norm for her.

Work all day today, so won't be able to test till 5:50 :( but, weekend tomorrow :-D

Happy Friday All!

Re: 4/26,Cleo: AMPS-247

I purchased the Zobaline, but only gave it to her one day. And that was the day, her #'s went high again. Wasn't sure if it could have been from that. But, they stayed high, so I will try adding it to her PM food today. She definitely can taste it, and she and I are HORRIBLE pill givers/takers, so I want to mix it in her food.

Re: 4/26,Cleo: AMPS-247

Quick note from work - no results to report, but since I complain about various things, I wanted to post a "sweet" moment.

This morning, when I was getting ready for work in the bedroom, who should come wandering in, but Cleo! She jumped up on bed, and gave me a head bump. I sat and scratched/rubbed her for about ten minutes, she was purring, and I, of course, was tearing up. I really wanted to take her out and get an out the door test, but I did not. Did not want to ruin our moment!!

A sweet way to start my day!!

Re: 4/26,Cleo: AMPS-247; PMPS-199

PMPS - 199 Gave .5 U

Her appetite is back to normal tonight. She is taking more of an interest in grooming herself past two days. Nice to see!

Re: 4/26,Cleo: AMPS-247; PMPS-199

The zobaline doesn't raise bg. I have a different form that is a capsule from vitacost but it has a trace of rice flour in it. Shadow wasn't carb sensitive so she didn't have a problem with
it. I haven't run out yet of the capsules.
I was planning on trying the zobaline but was going to try to grind it down to a powder ( if that's possible) since Shadow can't chew pill pockets ( barely any teeth)

Re: 4/26,Cleo: AMPS-247; PMPS-199

Hi, Jane, I'm glad Cleo's appy is better tonight.
It's nice to see our kitties taking an interest in grooming, too. :-D

I hope you guys are having a good evening!

Re: 4/26,Cleo: AMPS-247; PMPS-199

Aww, Cleo appreciates everything you're doing for her. She is really trying her best. :-D :-D The zobaline is very easy to crumble. We break it into 4 pieces and wrap with pill pocket to give to Zener.

PMPS - 199

+3.75 - 40

Gave her 2 tsp FF gravy food

She is eating it all, acting fine. I will test again in half hour

Re: 4/26,Cleo: ; PMPS-199; +3.75 - 40!!!

She was just raised to .5U yesterday am.

Shold I drop it down again tomorrow? This is crazy. Wish she could settle down.

Re: 4/26,Cleo: ; PMPS-199; +3.75 - 40!!!

Yikes! You're an old pro, Jane! Come up, Cleo. And congrats on the reduction. :-D You should get a more experienced members opinion but you might want to shave this time since she didn't seem to hold the reduction to 0.25u before.
Liz
ETA: I hope she settles down too. All the way to zero. {anti-jinx}

Re: 4/26,Cleo: ; PMPS-199; +3.75 - 40!!!

I figure there are about 12 drops per unit of insulin. So when you decrease from 0.5u to 0.25u, that is 3 less drops. Since Cleo didn't stay in good numbers when you reduced from 0.5 to 0.25 last time, this time you could reduce to a "skinny" 0.5, which would be the 0.5 minus a drop. That's called a "shave".

Another alternative is to reduce to a fat 0.25, which would be 0.5 minus 2 drops. The theory is that smaller reductions are easier to hold. Does this make sense?

Re: 4/26,Cleo: ; PMPS-199; +3.75 - 40!!!

Yes, it makes sense now. but, how do you measure a drop? I had a hard time measuring .25!

Re: 4/26,Cleo: ; PMPS-199; +3.75 - 40!!!

I'm assuming you gave Cleo some HC and you'll be testing at +4.25?

I don't count drops. I eyeball my fat and skinny doses. If you look in the New to the Group sticky, toward the bottom of the post, there are photos of these kinds of micro-doses.

Re: 4/26,Cleo: ; PMPS-199; +3.75 - 40!!!+4.25-42

We use calipers to measure the dose because the markings on the syringe are inconsistent. If I didn't use calipers, I would measure out the 0.5u like you normally do, then squeeze out a drop. You can also practice to see how many drops you can squeeze out from a 0.5u dose to see how big the drops should be. Cleo, you need to come up some more.

Re: 4/26,Cleo: ; PMPS-199; +3.75 - 40!!!+4.25-42

Sienne, I had gotten pretty good at the .25 U. I remember looking at the sticky before. Sometimes, it seemed like the plunger wouldn't move at all, then it would slike like a slippery eel!

I will try a fat .25 U in the am!

Thanks, and I will test again 30 minutes after she ate. My nerves keep sending me to the bathroom :o

Re: 4/26,Cleo: ; PMPS-199; +3.75 - 40!!!+4.25-42

If you want to count how many drops are in your usual 0.50 dose in your particular syringe, load a syringe to the 0.5 mark.... hold it with needle pointing straight up and twist the plunger
slowly, a droplet will form and roll down the needle.... that's one drop.... continue until empty .
Then you will know how many drops you are giving. ( but the syringes do vary slightly ... they are inaccurate so you could get as much as a drop difference from one syringe to the next...)

Re: 4/26,Cleo: ; PMPS-199; +3.75 - 40!!!+4.25-42

Lather, rinse and repeat.

In case you missed the section in Rhiannon's post, you want to twist the plunger rather than push it. Twisting will help with the fine tuning. Also, in case you're not already doing this, before you draw up any insulin, move the plunger up and down the syringe a couple of time before you draw your dose. There's a lubricant in the syringe and moving the plunger will help the plunger to slide more evenly.

Re: 4/26,Cleo: ; PMPS-199; +3.75 - 40!!!+4.25-42

I've found that twisting the barrel (rather than the plunger) works a little better for squeezing out drops.

Re: 4/26,Cleo: ; PMPS-199; +3.75 - 40!!!+4.25-42

Please tell me that water drops vs insulin drops are different. I am not getting anywhere near 10 drops to a unit.

Re: 4/26,Cleo: ; PMPS-199; +3.75 - 40!!!+4.25-42

I haven't tried water. You can probably spare a little insulin to practice. :-D

Re: 4/26,Cleo: ; PMPS-199; +3.75 - 40!!!+4.25-42

Just tried it with insulin. Only had 6 drops / 1 unit. It is amazing to see how such a minute amount of insulin can make such a difference in a kitty. It seems like next to nothing, yet can drop her that low. Truly amazing.

Re: 4/26,Cleo: ; PMPS-199; +3.75 - 40!!!+4.25-42;+5.47;+5.5

The number of drops may vary depending on the brand of syringe you're using vs. what Liz or Rhiannon use. What's important is how many drops your get or how you measure and that you do whatever it is you're doing consistently.

Re: 4/26,Cleo: ; PMPS-199; +3.75 - 40!!!+4.25-42;+5.47;+5.5

Good point, Sienne. We use monoject syringes. And I totally agree about being consistent, that is really important. Great job, Jane!

Re: 4/26,Cleo: ; PMPS-199; +3.75 - 40!!!+4.25-42;+5.47;+5.5

Thanks for all the good suggestions. I think for tomorrow, I will use hubby's reading glasses. I just tried them and they are much stronger than mine.

I will try to test her again at 12:15 ish. She is working hard at avoiding me.

Eating some FFLC - I will leave some out for night grazing.

Thanks everyone for all the help and suggestions. Cleo and I really appreciate you all!
