Just in case I needed any more evidence that my poor boy was stressed to the max, he spiked into the 500s at the vet's. I am sure that this number doesn't mean much of anything (well, other than him being stressed), but the vetty bean thinks that he should go back on the juice today. I will let him settle down a bit and see where he is at tonight before I make any decisions.

We have found the likely culprit for his higher numbers though: his teeth. Even though his last dental was only 8 months ago, he once again has infected gums and will probably need all of his remaining teeth pulled. His blood work looked pretty good (other than that ugly Glucose level) - I will post results later today (since I have to run to work in a few minutes). They are also sending out a urine culture. His urine basically looked like water and wasn't concentrated.

I am starting him on ABs today and he will get a dental on Friday. I feel awful for my poor boy and I can't believe that I had no clue that his teeth are rotting away. :(

:bighug::bighug::bighug: Poor little boy and you too Christina. Look how quickly you caught it! Loads of vines and prayers.

FWIW at Doodles first dental just months before the FD fx, he had 7 teeth pulled as they were in horrible shape. His neuropathy set in 3 months later:( Pretty sure looking back I lived in a paper bag most his life.

Point is, you're an amazing bean and hopefully after the dental he'll go right back OTJ.

I'm sorry Mandarin needs a dental again. I hope taking care of that will get him back to surfing in the lagoon. I'm wondering since the dental is so soon if you really need to give insulin before it. Don't beat yourself up. Cats are really good at hiding things. Sending prayers. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

It's good that it was caught and the dental can be done so quickly! Given that you will likely skip insulin the morning of the dental because he won't be able to eat, I might be tempted to wait until after the dental to make the decision about insulin.

pretty sure you will have to restart the insulin after the dental....
the sooner you start supporting that pancreas, the better so he doesn't relapse further....

but the chance is strong that he will get back to his remission status. If only they could be cured......

Hopefully the dental will send him back into remission. I recall someone else here (but can't remember who) that had to have dentals close together, too, and after the second one he went straight into remission.

Do not beat yourself about about his teeth...they are so good at hiding stuff and dental issues are definitely very hard to notice. I didn't realize my civvie Petey was as sick as he was until it was too late...he hid it that well.

I also agree about waiting to restart insulin until after the dental. If you are really concerned about his levels before then, there is always a short-acting insulin, like R.... Just a thought and might be totally off base.

Meanwhile, don't beat yourself up. Cats are masters at hiding their health issues. The important thing is you got him in and know what's going on and he'll be better soon. :bighug:

I think Mandarin has forgiven me for his traumatic vet experience. When I ran home for lunch, he peeked around the corner to make sure that there was no carrier in my hand and then walked up to me to ask for some scratches. His numbers had already started heading down as well. Very curious to see where he will be at tonight. I think I will give him some Insulin if he is still above 200 or 250, but I will hold off until after his dental if he is lower than that.

Alright, off to the next meeting and then another three hour night class..... and some caffeine and carbs for the bean.

Poor Mandarin and his teeth. Gosh, teeth is what tooth Bubba out of remission the first time and it was less than one year since his previous dental! Ugh. I like the idea that Tricia threw out there with some short acting R, you can get it at Walmart without an RX. @Tricia Cinco(GA) & Harvey what dose would you start off at? .25 unit?

Are you referring to R? I would ask the people here that are super familiar with it, like @julie & punkin (ga), @Wendy&Neko or @Sandy and Black Kitty. I would suggest asking your vet, Christina, but you already said the advice you got there was to restart Lantus. I don't know if it's the best choice in this situation or not, but I do know they used it on Harvey in the hospital when they didn't want him on a long-lasting insulin for a couple of days.

Yes, I was referring to R.

Hi there

BKs Achilles heel ended up being his teeth and gums. He had his first dental on 12/08/2008 (and it was major, maybe 8 extractions) and as soon as he finished the post dental ABs it was time to fasten our seat belts. The next 15 weeks were total insanity as he flew down the dosing ladder from 13u to 3u. It was a miracle.
Then pink started to once again appear on the scene, then red. Back up in dose he went, 7 increases up to 5.25u by mid May. I was devastated.
One day I caught a big yawn and spotted redness on the gums around one of his remaining molars.

Although it had been just about 6 months since the first dental, back to the veterinary dental specialist we went and son of a gun he needed further extractions.
After that it was another crazy slide down the dosing ladder, all the way to the falls :D

Looking at Mamdarins ss I dont think R is a appropriate at all. She seems to be quite sensitive to insulin and R is potent stuff. I'm not even sure about her starting back on Lantus with the dental right around the corner. If it were me I would try and get some testing in tomorrow, whatever you can manage for both AM and PM cycles, so that you can get a better picture of what is going on BG wise. Then make your decision.

I think I will give him some Insulin if he is still above 200 or 250, but I will hold off until after his dental if he is lower than that.
I like your plan!
A simple case of gingivitis knocked Alex out of remission after almost 3 years off the juice. A dental and being aggressive with insulin sent her back to the Falls within 8 weeks. It probably could have been sooner, but because it was the second time around, I wanted to wean her off insulin very, very slowly.
Good luck!

Luckily, my sweet boy made my decision very easy: no Insulin. Not only is he below 200, he made it all the way back into green. Granted, this cycle is probably a total exception due to the vetty stress, but there's no way I am experimenting with Insulin tonight. I am exhausted and I have another long day ahead of me tomorrow... gotta love those Tuesday night classes that are followed by a morning class on Wednesday.

He will probably need some juice to kick start his pancreas again, but I will take it day by day and might just hold off until after his dental. And after this last week of classes is over!
