Good morning! Ali is still not doing to good and I'm getting ready to call the vet so I can take her in after I get off of work.
Jojo has given me some good stuff to talk to the vet about, but I have some questions and I'm pretty sure that she is probably sleeping and I don't want to bother her if I don't have to, so I was wondering if anyone could help with one of the questions.
Jojo suggested I ask for zofran and famotadine, both injectables. Are these medications that the vet gives once or are these meds that I would be giving at home? Do you administer them like you would insulin?
I'm going to wait about a half hour before calling vet so maybe someone can help me out. If not, I'll have to call Jojo....
Thanks!!

Re: 4/25 Civvie still not feeling well....question about med

I didn't have injectible zofran with Maverick - just the pills. I've read often that Zofran does sting in injectible format but it is the best way to get it in. It was suggested keeping it cold in the fridge might help so I would ask the vet or pharmacist about this. Also ask how far apart they should be given if this is a factor with injections - I know it is with pills.

Posted on your FB as well:

The Zofran (Ondansetron) is for nausea, and the Famotidine is the same as Pepcid for stomach acid. I think Jojo wants you to have the injections for better absorption and so they won't be vomited. The vet may want to give them only once, but since you are familiar with giving shots, try to get her to send you home with some (she will probably send pre-filled syringes if she feels that she doesn't want to send you a large supply). Both of those meds are injected sub Q, just like insulin, but it will be in a larger syringe with a bigger needle. Will you also ask for sub Q fluids? Has Jojo mentioned, or has your vet offered Cerenia? It is also for vomiting. That is given for a maximum of five days. It can be given at the same time as Zofran, but your vet may not want to do both, so go with what Jojo said.

Re: 4/25 Civvie still not feeling well....question about med

There are a number of people here who keep injectible famotidine in the house. It kind of makes sense to have meds that help to reduce nausea and vomiting in an injectible form so they don't get thrown back up. A lot will depend on the comfort of your vet with giving you injectible meds. Some vets are very comfortable with it and others aren't.

Thanks!!! I have myself armed with some info about cerenia and I called the vet and informed the receptionist to let the vet know that I want zofran and famotadine injectables for Ali and to please write it down and let the vet know so she has plenty of time to look them up if she isn't familuar with them.....that is what she told me when I asked about certain meds, cerenia was one of them, on Friday. She gave me Reglan, which on the printout I have, states that is is good for dogs but not for cats. She gave me this med because she was familuar with it...so if that was true, wouldn't she know that it wouldn't be good for Ali?
I wish Dr. M was back today, but she's on vacation until Weds. At least I know she will listen to what I'm saying and not dismiss me, like I think this substitute vet is doing. I remember the last time a Sub saw me and Spot, she was a little stand offish when I was trying to tell her what I wanted and why...she acted like I didn't know what I was talking about...but the next time she saw me, she remembered me and said to me....You know, I was impressed with how much you knew about Spot and his diabetes. You are really in tuned with what is going on with your cat. I guess after I left she either looked over Spot's chart better or she had a conversation with the folks there who knew us better, lol.
Wish us luck!
