4/24, Susie, 264 AMPS, Question About Weight

I had them weigh Susie when she was at the vets. She is down to 12.96 lbs. She was 13.7 two weeks ago. We wanted her to lose weight, and she has been consistently doing that, but this was a pretty big drop for two weeks. At what point do we become concerned?

Thanks, Melissa. If you look at my Susie's spreadsheet she is actually doing worse than she was a month ago. Granted, she has had two convenia shots but this constant lack of improvement really worries me. I just don't know what to think. Is this glucose intolerance? Is it the convenia shots? We are just making no progress.
Answering here with my opinion so as not to take over Melissa's thread. IDK about covenia shots but it's possible that it could be insulin resistance. Whatever it is, the way to get past these higher numbers is by giving Susie more insulin until you get a breakthrough. I've had to do that with Butters to break through some insulin resistance. I'm sure you've seen by now on her ss, but at one point I had to keep increasing from .5u and her numbers were just as abysmal following each increase until I reached 4.25u.

I agree with Lyla. Susie s a long term diabetic and the only way to get her regulated is to increase and not let her stay in higher numbers.
I did considered switching Max to Levimir at one point but then he became tightly controlled on Lantus and my schedule was such that I couldn’t learn how he would react to a new insulin. He wasn’t on a high dose and Lantus didn’t sting either. For high dose cats I think it’s a better insulin for many. I don’t think Susie has been in Lantus in enough to know what it will do for her. This is just my opinion.

We are on SLGS and I just started this new dose. I don't think I can increase her dose for a while now. Thanks, Lyla. I am following SLGS because I am paranoid but this lack of improvement is distrubing.

I appreciate both of you comments (Lyla and Elise). Should I be concerned about the weight loss? In two weeks she has gone from 13.7 lbs to 12.96 lbs? The vet and I wanted her to lose weight but I think this is too much and too soon. What do you think?

According to Dr. Lisa Pierson, a safe rate of weight loss is 1 - 2% of your cat's current body weight per week: https://catinfo.org/feline-obesity-an-epidemic-of-fat-cats/#Safe_Rate_of_Weight_Loss

Susie weighed 13.7 lbs or 219 ounces. 1 - 2% of that (with rounding) is 2.2oz - 4.4oz. So in two weeks, she could safely lose 8.8oz at the high end. Her new weight is 12.96 lbs or approximately 208 ounces. So she lost just over two ounces more than she should have, assuming my calculations are accurate. I am not a vet, but if Susie were my cat I'd monitor her weight at home and I'd probably slow down the weight loss a touch. But that's my opinion.

You have a baby scale. I remember this from this condo. You could weigh Susie every week or more frequently to make sure she doesn't lose weight too quickly, and adjust caloric intake if needed.

Yes, I do have a baby scale and can weigh her once a week. I'm wondering if the convenia had something to do with this weigh loss in the last two weeks. I should also see another fairly large weight loss in two more weeks if it was the convenia since she just had her second shot. Thanks for the post from Dr. Lisa.
