Good Morning Afternoon LL! Tess's appy saga continues. :YMSIGH: This morning it could be because she was dropping, seems a lot like Friday. She ate most of her first breffis, but that was 1% raw and with the lack of fuds yesterday she just dropped to much. This morning she ate most of her breffis (with encouragement  ) but Wellness Turkey was a no go at +3, ditto Gerber Turkey baby food. Then we tried Gerber Chicken and a drop of honey, success! :-D :-D the honey kept her up for 2 hours as usual. +6 offering was Drs Foster and Smith Trout and Brown Rice (6% carbs and 245 on the Phos) w/ more honey. Success again!

She is acting like she feels OK and will eat if enough freeze dried duck breast is sprinkled on and some foods that are new to her. I wonder if she is identifying not feeling good last week w/ the food she normally eats and is just off those. Plus there has been stress of Emma and we were adjusting her food on Friday and going to the vet and we were gone on sunday ………………… the list goes on! Just trying to get things settled and Tess eating enough.

I've got the labs and need to get them on the SS. Creatinine are up a little, but i wonder if it could have been from the ham baby food we were using to get Tess to eat??? I'm wondering on the weight loss which the vet was more concerned about than the lab values, the tech said 8.1 pounds, but we just weighed her and she was 8 pounds 10 ounces. Could she have been thinking in decimals when the scale was reading pounds and ounces? confused_cat

Michelle, thanks for stopping in last night. Tess hasn't been sick but there is were several cycles of low numbers last Friday Sat that seem to have triggered things. No vomiting and she eats whn I make it enticing enough. Maybe a little nauseous, but pecid didn't seem to make a difference.

Anne, thank you for the info last night. I haven't given the Cerenia as there has been no vomiting, guess i asked for the wrong thing! Isn't ondansetron also for vomiting? Or is it for nausea as well? I can't really tell if she is nauseous as she usually will eat if there are enough sprinkles. I've been thinking of calling and asking for Cypro, just to jump start her. Vet offered Mirtazapine, but neither of us were thrilled w/ that option. Cypro wasn't mentioned, so I wonder if that is a good option. I have a hard time keeping all of these straight.

OK, this has gone on long enough! thanks for all the vines everyone!

WCR All 5 Ps, Sort of Plate Club, well, at least Emma will eat the rejects! Last seen up the oak tree trying to catch the morning doves!

Hi Ann, those are very nice numbers for Tess, but so sorry to hear of the appy issues. Sending appy vines. and positive thoughts.

Re: 4/23 Tess AMPS~115 +3~49 +4~52 +5~74+6~52+7~58 +8.5~67+1

Zener was on mirtazapine (after his first dental in Dec 2011) and we think that we gave him too much and it made him frantic. Food wasn't moving through his system and he threw up. Then he wouldn't eat and we had to syringe feed for a few days. So we are not big mirtazapine fans. We use the cyproheptadine for appy stimulant as needed. We give a teeny piece, maybe 1/32 of a pill. It seems to take about an hour and then he will eat. Karrie said that we should also give an anti-nausea drug along with the appy stimulant and that's what the ondansetron is for. As I recall, you need to give ondansetron every 12 hours which is not hard to remember with a cat on Lantus. Sending eating vines to Tess. Poor appy is more stressful on the beans than high BGs. Hugs to you, Ann.

Hi Ann,
I know next to nothing about these appy remedies. I'm with you: they all sound alike and are easy to mix up. I'm going to send special appy vines to Tess so that she and you won't have to struggle with the meds!

The difference between Tess's weight at the vet's and at home may indeed be how the scale at the vet's was read. That's a huge difference between 8.1 lb. and 8 lb., 10 oz. Do you have a baby scale at home? Rusty has one that is very accurate and will weigh in decimal as well as in lbs and oz.

Wishing you a good evening and hoping that Tess will eat her fuds.

Hugs & scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Hi Tess, We've got to plan for the Full Fish Moon party tomorrow. Can you bring the Kitchen Krew to my house? We can sit on the radiators and divide up the cooking. Mannie's menu from last year is really long.
See you tomorrow,
Rusty

HI Ann :-D :-D :-D

WOW on today. Love the greens!

I'm sorry on the appy thing too. I know what an ordeal that can be. We tried the mirtazapine too, but it really had no effect. We had the option of the cypro - but I have heard that it can cause constipation? not sure - maybe Anne of Liz would know. We went with the cerenia, even though it is more for vomiting than nausea, but it did seem to help settle things enough for Mannie so that he could and would eat. We used pepcid too, that also seemed to help some. We never could use the ondansetron, as i was told by a couple of vets that one has to be very careful with kitty with heart or liver issues when using that drug. They felt that it was just too hard on an already compromised system. Wish I knew for sure on that one... Mannie's issues in that regard (liver, heart) were minor, but we just couldn't take the chance. Reading your condo takes me back to the past few months were I literally had cans lined up on the counter trying to find what he would eat that day. For us, I really think alot of the problems was his eating fuds when he felt so bad that the association was formed with the food and feeling yucky. Forgive me if I have written all this before (lordie be! can't remember!).... Could be too just the stress of dealing with things t home, or your being away. Where is that crystal ball when you need it. ;-) I wish you luck! and Tess: EAT YOUR FUDS!

oh wow on the weight - bet they did!

i will laugh though on Emma eating the rejects. That is Elsa. Boy has she gotten some good stuff!

Beautiful numbers today, even if it is due in part to lack of fuds. I hope she will start to eat better. i cannot tell you the number of trips I made to pet d stores looking for something new, anything different....

Hope your day has been a good one, that you got some time away from the meter. :-D

Re: 4/23 Tess AMPS~115 +3~49 +4~52 +5~74+6~52+7~58 +8.5~67+1

Cerenia was developed as a car sickness med for dogs. Since then, it's been used for nausea and vomiting and it also has anti-inflammatory properties. Ondansatron was originally developed as an anti-nausea med and is often prescribed for people who are undergoing chemotherapy.

I've used both cypro and mirtazepine with Gabby. Both worked. I believe the mirtazapine was a longer acting medication and was dosed every 3 days. Cats can have differing responses to each appetite stimulant.

I think your assessment may be on target, though. If she is associating not feeling well with her usual foods, like you suspect, it may be that feeding Tess something different and working in some of her usual favorites may take time but it should work. I hope life settles down for you and Tess.

Re: 4/23 Tess AMPS~115 +3~49 +4~52 +5~74+6~52+7~58 +8.5~67+1

Yeah on the low string of numbers for today! Boo on the poor appy.

I used to crumble all sorts of treats on top of Wink's food to entice him to eat. The Halo Liv-a-little chicken freeze dried treats were a favorite and would often get him to eat when his appy was a little off. Mixing foods sometimes helped. He never did like the parmesan cheese sprinkles.

Also had to support his appetite with the mirtazipine every other day. It worked ok the first day, not so good the second day.

A little pepcid ac, 1/4 tab seemed to help. He would take a few nibbles, lip smack and walk away like he was nauseated.

It really takes some experimenting to find different approaches that will work, usually a combination of several things as you know.

Good luck on the appy and keep us updated.

Re: 4/23 Tess AMPS~115 PMPS~108 +2~179

I also hope Tess's appetite will get beck to normal. The thing I didn't like about either drug was they made my cats edgy...vocalizing, pacing....Teddi would pant. I hope it's just Tess getting out of her normal schedule that has caused the issues.

I'm guessing the vet ran the creat in her office? I don't think those tests are as accurate as sending them to the lab. I'd be interested in how all her numbers are that a linked to renal issues...potassium, phosphorus, BUN, calcium, HCT, etc.

Sending good appy vines.

Re: 4/23 Tess AMPS~115 PMPS~108 +2~179

PM meal was the usual NV raw chicken and Avoderm chicken. She ate about a third of it. At +2 Tess BG was 179, and only nibbled at the leftovers. It was kind of stale by then. Ann offered her a +3 meal of Dr. Foster and Smith Trout and brown rice. Tess finished it in about 2 minutes. Now she is napping again. So she has an appy for the right food :-D . See what she does at +6.
