Here's a question for peeps with more experience giving meds.

I have some syringes prefilled with 0.1 bupe. At times, I need to give half that.
It needs to be put under tongue, or in cheek pouch (easiest for me)....in a squirming cat.
No way is he going to sit still with head up, so I can see, to slowly dispense half of the prefilled dose.

Is there an easy way to transfer half, to a clean syringe? I don't want to lose a precious drop.

All ideas welcome please.

Hi guys .. were you guys hit good with that storm?? Number's aren't looking to bad today .. bet that +2 is a food spike and mr checkers works his way back down .. Good luck with transferring the bupe to new syringes .. have a great day guys!

Ack! Not sure about that Barb. And giving only half would be nearly impossible to gauge while dispensing it.

I used to get the bupe in a bottle, then I would draw up my own dose. SInce this is going to be long term for Checkers, do you think your vet would do the same for you?

It is so expensive, I wouldn't want to lose a drop either!

Hi Barb - no clue on the bupe, but I think maybe Carolyn has a good point. if it is long term maybe the vial? good luck with the transferring - that would be hard to measure, but if you think you could do it: why not?

Ok Checks - think Blue, OK? You're headed the wrong way.... turn around, OK?

Chiming in on the turn around talk Checkers! No need to spike like that.

I had the same problem when Tess needed meds. It's way to easy to squirt too much in in those situations. How about making a depth stop from an old syringe, it's already marked out. Cut it to length, then (the hard part) cut enough out of the side so it can snap around the expose plunger. Or if you have a piece of softer tubing it would be easier to cut.

I think getting a vial from doc is the only way I can do that.
I can ask for syringes with precise dose, but paying per syringe, for long term, would break the bank.

I've been playing with syringes and water, and although the front end of one syringe fits nicely into the back end of the other, it's impossible to get the drops down to the tip....with plunger pushing on bubbles, etc.
I might be better off, giving the 0.1 every other day.


His pain seems to be sporadic. I'm trying whatever I can, to keep him from jumping, when he feels good.

Checkers is walking the hallway complaining loudly about the bathroom door being closed. I created a monster :lol:

Barb, like the little plastic stops you sometimes have to take off pump bottles.

Thanks Melissa. My DD, a nurse, works in a hospital. I'll ask her about them.

I'm still leaning toward trying the pre-filled syringe dose, every other day.
That stuff's too expensive to play games with, and every drop counts.

No idea on the syringe. Glad he is feeling better. I would do the every other day but someone probably has a better answer.

I'm so glad to hear Checks is feeling good today. It sounds like he's feeling a little TOO good, given that big leap he took this morning!! I don't know about the bupe situation, but I'm sure someone here will have a great idea for you.

It's been a good day. I gave bupe this morning, even tho he was acting energetic, and silly.
I've seen him start out nicely, and then go downhill, many times.
If I can get out of my driveway tomorrow, I'm going to get new insulin. I didn't trust this vial from the start, 4/2

Yes, I'm in denial. It's my new address. :roll:
 
Good evening, guys,

My vet dispenses the Bupe in a vial that looks like a test tube with a stopper top. The (Monoject) syringes with removable needles she gave me have long needles that you stick through the stopper so that you can draw and measure the Bupe just like you would draw insulin. Then you take the needle off the syringe and squirt the Bupe into his cheek. I haven't used it yet!!

It's great that Checkers is feeling so good. Good luck with fattening his dose.
Are you in line to get the big storm that is supposed to hit Buffalo and points south? I hope you haven't yet put away your snow shovel!!

Yikes...my lights were just flickering.
It's amazing how quickly one can get the kitchen cleaned, when power outage threatens :lol: .
It's been snowing all day, and it's wet and heavy.
I'm going to turn off computer and whatever else I can, before I lose power. Hubby was an electrician, and explained how the power comes back on in stages, and people lose valuable electric 'stuff' when it's only halfway on.
