Max woke me around 4:15 this morning. He was whimpering by his food dish.I fed him. He was grunting a little. Then I decided to take his BG and it was 331. That was at +9.5 so he was pink all day. I tried to video him but he didn't cooperate. He ate again at 5:30-6 so I don't even know if I will bother to take his BG before his 7:00 insulin. I'm going to make a vet appointment. He is not acting right and I don't know where to begin testing. I usually fast him before blood tests and it is necessary for an fPL but with diabetes I don't know if that is a good idea. The fPl needs a 12 hour fast to be most accurate but it is only off if it is in the gray zone.
I know my vet will want a fructosamine but I know it will show he is not controlled based on all my testing. I don't know if I should refuse it or just let him do it. It may not be worth ticking him off to refuse as my vet puts up with my questions and self medicating Max when needed.

Max was more under the bed than usual the last few days. Some of that is habit and some may be not feeling well. He's been out and quiet since I fed him. :YMSIGH:

Sending lots of healing vines to Max and calming vines to you.
It's so worrying when they act differently, but it's very good Max is eating.
I hope the vet appointment goes well.

Re: 4/22Max Worried

I would make an appt with the vet. If nothing else, it will reassure you. One thought, though, is that Max may be feeling less than wonderful due to bouncing. There are some kitties -- and humans, for that matter -- that when their numbers drop low and then shoot back up, they just feel rotten until they get back to a better range. You know Max best and may be able to gauge if this is pancreatitis or if it's the swing in his numbers.

As for the fructosamine, if one has been done within the last few months, I would plead that the expense doesn't justify it with home testing. If you let the vet know that you're prioritizing based on how Max is feeling and acting now, you can revisit the fructosamine at his annual check=up.

Re: 4/22Max Worried

If you do a massage of his abdomen, does he try to get away, bite, or hiss? Those could indicate pain, if he normally would allow it.

If you print out his spreadsheet, preferably in color (or use colored highlighters if no color printer), and take it in with you, you can explain that you know he is unregulated and why, so a fructosamine would be a pointless expense.

Re: 4/22Max Worried

Hi guys .. well, no advice from me but I sure will keep you in my prayers .. it is so hard when our kitties just aren't acting right .. I hope it's just due to bouncing and nothing else .. hang in there guys :YMHUG:

Re: 4/22Max Worried AMPS 313

Thanks everyone. The fact that he is eating well is puzzling. I have a worker here right now so Max is hiding. When he leaves I will examine Max carefully. I have buprenex if needed and ondansetron too. Just going to the vet triggers an episode so if I can avoid it that would be good. I do need to take him soon though. I will assess the situation in a couple of hours. It would help to know if it's the bouncing or something else so if I can get him into better numbers first it might help with that piece of the puzzle.

After he are at 7:30 he was purring and stayed out until the worker came. He never eats with a panc attack without meds.

Re: 4/22Max Worried AMPS 313

I hope it's just the bouncing. Eating is a very good sign. I'd plead the expense of the frutosamine test too. You can also take you meter alon, most have a function to show 14, 30 and even 60 day averages. Fructosamine is just a 2 week average and not really very accurate.

Re: 4/22Max Worried AMPS 313

I actually email him the ss every week. He has said in the past that at some point he would like to get a fructosamine. When I bring him in I think I'll just say based on the numbers it doesn't look like he is regulated so I'd rather spend the money when it will really tell us something. I know he will do a complete blood count, chem 25, blood pressure check, maybe fPL, urinalysis and since we haven't been there in a couple of months probably hit me with a regular visit instead of a recheck so I'm looking at a big bill. If things don't improve I will pop for an US next. Something is just not right. I do think he has neuropathy now and that needs to be addressed as well. I'm wondering if I should order the injectable or try the zobaline first??

Re: 4/22Max Worried AMPS 313

Great news he purred and stayed out. :-D

Lucy has a chronic pancreatitis too!
We become pretty good at noticing signs when a flare is coming, don't we?
I thought Max's eating well was puzzling too.

Paws crossed he keeps improving.

Re: 4/22Max Worried AMPS 313

Lucy and Max have a lot in common. They are the same age too. You must be almost finished with the antibiiotics. I hope she is doing well. I haven't read much the last couple of days.

Re: 4/22Max Worried AMPS 313

Hi Elise.

It's so frustrating when you know something isn't right, but can't figure out what. Is his litterbox routine normal? It's good he's eating.

I've been using Zobaline on Cinco for over a year now, and it really worked for him. He used to walk all hunched down, and he hadn't jumped on the furniture in ages. Now he walks normally and lately he's been jumping up on the sofa, and last night up to the back. Now, that's more than just the Zobaline - he's feeling better in general, but the Zobaline really made a big difference for him. I highly recommend it.

Sending healing vines for Max, and calming vines for you! I hope you get to the bottom of it.

Re: 4/22Max Worried AMPS 313

Thanks, Tricia. Where do you buy your zobaline?

He's using his litter box and going about the same, some days a little more. He has been drinking a little more but I have given him a little more freeze dried turkey when he gets hungry too close to insulin time. Constipation that was occurring a couple of weeks ago is gone and I'm back to giving him miralax once a day this week.

Re: 4/22Max Worried AMPS 313

I would not give injectable B12 for neuropathy because the injectable B12 is cyanocobalamin. The zobaline is methylcobalamin and that's what neuropathy responds to. Here is the link to the LifeLink Zobaline but amazon carries it as well so I'd just google and comparison shop. That's what I do with any kind of supplies because sometimes it's cheaper one place, and the next time cheaper somewhere else.

My vet called Texas A&M Univ which is where the specfPL was developed. They also run the test (so does IDEXX so it depends on what lab your vet uses). TAMU stated that the specfPL needs a 12 hour fast for a non diabetic or for a non-insulin dependent diabetic and a 6-hour fast for an insulin-dependent diabetic. Also, I would follow along your line of thinking regarding the fructosamine. Tell your vet you can't afford it right now and you have real time data. Perhaps in the future but you need to spend the $$ on other more important things right now.

I hope Max is feeling better. When Gracie was bouncing up into pink and staying there, she was quiet. She has never been one to hide unless there are work people in the house but she definitely was much quieter than usual. I hope this is all that is wrong.

Re: 4/22Max Worried AMPS 313+4.5=243

Don't have any advice, but sending more healing vines to Max!

Hope it's just the bouncing that's got him out of sorts and he's feeling better soon.

Come on Max...tell your mamabean what's wrong!

Re: 4/22Max Worried AMPS 313+4.5=243+6=236

Hi Elsie,
Just sending some vines along to Max. I hope he'll be feeling and acting normal soon.

Ella & Rusty (who fasts for 6 hours before a spec fPL).

How did things go at the vet? I wouldn't let the vet do the fructosimine test either since we already know that his is not tightly regulated. I'm glad that Marje suggested that you try the Zobaline made for cats instead of the injectable vitamin B12. Like I said, most vets prefer the shot but it's not the same stuff.

I hope you get some answers soon. Sending you both white healing light.

I didn't take him to the vet. I want to get a video of what he is doing. He made the strange sounds a little last night but I didn't have my phone next to me to record it and he was next to me on my bed. Maybe he will do it during the day. If I can't show it to my vet, he won't know what to check other than the usual labs and urinalysis. I have one of him walking now. Thanks for asking, Tina. I didn't visit night because I was just drained. Not a good day and not all about Max. I'll check in with you today.
