Trixie's appy is off today. She went through all her the usual morning rituals including snuggles and running in and out of the laundry room to hunt for stray kibbles while I prepped their meals, but when it came time to eat, she barely had a few licks. I gave her some Pepcid, and she has since eaten a bit...enough for me to think I was comfortable shooting a BCS, and now that she's still lowish-flat, I hope I don't regret just skipping. She IS still very enthusiastically eating her pill-pocketed-FortaFlora-dusted BP meds, so she's not totally off, but she's definitely off. She's also purry and bright-eyed, but at the same time, her right eye seemed a little goopy earlier. She's getting very annoyed with MamaBean's constant checking on her and offering fuds. I may have to bust out some HC. I do have to work today, and so wish I didn't have to go.

I was also going over Dr LIsa's fuds list yet again, and feeling so frustrated yet again that the options for our FD/CKD kitties are so very limited. But, I came up with a few that I'm going to try and track down later today. I know she prefers more variety than she's been getting...but I also know today was an "I'm not hungry" mood, not an "I'm hungry, but I'm not in the mood to eat that" mood.

I probably won't get her BW results from last weekend back until tomorrow, since my vet is usually off Mondays and Tuesdays. I don't know if her schedule would be any different this week since last weekend was a holiday.

Feeling a bit anxious.....

Amy

Re: 4/22 Trixie AMPS 59 +2 63 - Appy off/BCS

Good appy vines for Trixie! I hope it picks up. At least it isn't completely off, but it is still bothersome when they don't eat well. Of course today is a green day too. I hope you get the BW back today. I know you are really anxious about it. ((((Amy)))) Have a great day!

Re: 4/22 Trixie AMPS 59 +2 63 - Appy off/BCS

Morning Amy ~O) ~O) ~O)

Wonderful numbers today for Trixie, but bummer on the appy. Wise move I think to shoot a BCS. I can so remember chasing Mannie around with that fuds bowl, and his annoyance too. ;-) And always on a green day.... I hope that it is "just one of those mornings".

I hope the BW comes aback today. I'd be anxious too. Good luck with the fuds shopping. I hope you can find what you need.

Have a great day today. I hope all goes well.

Re: 4/22 Trixie AMPS 59 +2 63 - Appy off/BCS

Morning Amy, nice greens, but sorry to hear Trixie's appy is off today. Smart move with the BCS as better to be safe and you are so in tune with Trixie. Sending appy vines and healing for her eye. The fuds and what she would eat was always a challenge with Mags (GA), too. Lots of good luck with the fuds shopping. Hoping your Vet reaches you soon with the Lab results.
Hugs and scritches

Re: 4/22 Trixie AMPS 59 +2 63 +3.75 77 - Appy off/BCS

At least she didn't drop any further.

I'm going to do a quick fuds run before I head into work. I do wonder if this is POSSIBLY due to the fluids we did last night. She is somewhat symptomatic of overhydration (from Tanya's site), and she was fine last evening before the fluids. I don't know...grasping as usual...

Off for fuds, then work....I'll come home and check on her in a couple hours.

Re: 4/22 Trixie AMPS 59 +2 63 +3.75 77 - Appy off/BCS

Sending appy vines to Trixie.
I'm glad she's purry and bright-eyed.
Good luck with the food hunting, Amy!

Re: 4/22 Trixie AMPS 59 +2 63 +3.75 77 - Appy off/BCS

Good luck w/ the fuds hunting! it is frustrating to find something that is good for multiple conditions. Lots of appy vines and paws crossed that the blood work is back soon.

Re: 4/22 Trixie AMPS 59 +2 63 +3.75 77 +6.5 69 - Better!

I'm home...she seems to be feeling better. I tested her, gave her a new treat that I got today and she was VERY excited about that. It's probably not diabetic-approved, but at this point, I'm sure one little bite won't hurt, and I want to see that enthusiasm to make sure she is interested in fuds in general. Then I gave her some Avoderm Chicken, which she's never had before. It's on the higher carb side, so overall not ideal, but the phosphorous level is good and with her lower numbers today I wasn't as worried that it wasn't her usual low carb. I wanted to give her something that was very different from the other foods since she could associate feeling crappy with those foods at the moment. She didn't lick the plate completely clean, but she jumped down when she smelled it, ate a fair amount, then got on her rocking chair and started washing her face. I left the rest of it there for her to hopefully snack on later today.

Overall, I'm not sure what we should do with her food situation. I bought several things to try. We could stick with this one of she continues to like it, but she'll need more insulin. But, she does have to eat, too...we probably are reaching (or getting close to) the stage where we're going to sometimes have to trade off carbs for a cat who wants to eat.

I have to head back to work now, but I do feel better/less anxious myself. Hopefully she'll feel even better by dinner time.

Re: 4/22 Trixie AMPS 59 +2 63 +3.75 77 +6.5 69 - Better!

Glad to hear Trixie seems to be feeling a little better!!

Now come on Trixie..surf safe for your mamabean while she goes to work to pay for all those fuds for you!

Re: 4/22 Trixie AMPS 59 +2 63 +3.75 77 +6.5 69 - Better!

Sorry Trixie was feeling off this morning, but I'm glad to see you finally got her to eat. I totally understand the frustration of finding a variety of fuds, as I'm dealing with the same thing myself. With us, there's always one cat that doesn't like a new flavor. Usually it's Harvey, which is bad, because he's the reason we have to get off FF/Friskies! Lately Minka has been picky, too. Sigh! I can't tell you how excited I get when I hit on one that everyone eats on the first try. Unfortunately, that's a short list. Unless you're trying to avoid fish, try Avoderm's Ocean Fish flavor. That one got eight paws up here, and they've had it several times with success. Good luck and let me know if you find any true gems!

Sending healing and appy vines. Safe surfing vines, too. Please come up a little, Trixie!

Re: 4/22 Trixie AMPS 59 +2 63 +3.75 77 +6.5 69 - Better!

I'm glad Trixie is feeling better and ate some for you. Hopefully she'll be back to normal by this evening.

Someone did barf this afternoon, and of course we have to believe it was most likely Trixie. She's generally not a barfer, so needless to say, I'm extra concerned. I'm not comfortable shooting even a BCS tonight, given the events of today and that starting number.

With that said, she DID come down and snuggle with DH before he tested her, and she was waiting for her dinner, but like this morning, after a few licks she walked away....obviously not feeling great.

Questions:

I gave her Pepcid this morning. Should I give her some tonight to help settle her tummy?

I do have some cerenia tablets from Noah being sick last fall...should I giver her that instead of pepcid?

Should I give neither?

This really is new territory for me, and between her CKD and FD I'm beyond anxious. If she's not feeling better by tomorrow, I'm going to take her in....

ETA...I talked to the vet's office, although my vet wasn't in. They said just once a day on the Pepcid for Trix based on her weight. I'm nervous about giving cerenia without her being seen by a vet...

I would take a look at Tanya's site regarding the Pepsid. From what I recall, I think it's OK to give but I'd encourage you to not trust my memory. Marje has lots more hands on experience with CKD than I do but from what I remember, the kidney stuff can cause an acid stomach and food issues. When Gabby was quite ill after her diagnosis of FD, I was able to go up to 5mg of Pepsid twice a day for a 12 lb cat.

Keep in mind that if you need to, you can use a phos binder. That will give you some additional flexibility regarding food that Trixie may be interested in eating. I also think you're wise to make sure she's not associating feeling lousy with certain foods.

If you look on Jill/Alex's SS, she has some info on FD/CKD foods she uses with Alex.

Thanks, Sienne...I was thinking we could give Pepcid twice a day - my own vet may have said that, but she's not in today, so the receptionist asked another vet. Trix weighs about 11lbs. I'll double-check Tanya's site on that. I'll also look at Alex's SS. I was looking at Tess's earlier, too, because I know Ann broke it out as well. I've really concluded most of the same foods...so few, and Trix hates EVO so that was is totally out.

We are already using a binder and it has helped lower Trix's phosphorous significantly. But I think we may need to explore a wider range of foods, but carb-wise and phos-wise...I am WAY stressed trying to get just the right food that really doesn't exist.

She did just eat a little baby food for me. I'm going slow with offering food, and I thought it might be better to step back even a little further and go with the baby food for the moment - small amounts, spaced out over time. She did take her BP meds for me, too. She was purring with the baby food and I can tell she looks like she doesn't feel great, but she also is somewhat bright-eyed. She also seems a bit snuffly...at this point, I'm hoping and praying this is a little bug she picked up at the vet last weekend, and not something else.....

Many vines for Trixie and calming vines for you, Amy. We give zantac twice a day to Zener, 1/8 of a 10 mg pill. Zantac is like pepcid but has something that also helps with motility.
