Problem is you have to read the result at 15 seconds. It changes after that which can result in wrong result. Instructions even say that.
Think if I used a flashlight on it would it help?
If you can catch a little urine in something then you can take that container and test strip to an area where the light is good BEFORE you dip the strip.

I haven't used a flashlight (yet), it might work. Try to see if there is obvious pink against the testing pad. For me the daylight - balcony or a window- helps a lot. It does change after 15 -20 sec to darker color, and in the beginning I thought Ducia had Large ketones readings; I was wrong because waited too long .
 
I was putting it in his stream as he peed but then he would sit more so I can't do that. So then I dip in the wettest part of the litter with the stick.
Maybe that makes the pink hue color?
I use corn based litter.
