Good day everyone,

I'm kinda needing some advice with our kitty Jubalee.
Last night was complete chaos, as I was checking Juba's BG levels every 2-3 hours throughout the night.
She is now on 0.25u of Lantus, and seems to be dwindling after only 2 hours after initial shooting.

My question is, would be it ok to just feed her a "light lunch" in between her breakfast and dinner?
She gets tuna as a snack after her +2 BG test, and then again after other BG tests throughout the day.

Here's my problem:
After the thousands of dollars spent on Juba, I [have] to get a job, and sleep, and get back to living a "normal" life before Juba's DM.

I cannot keep checking Juba's BG every 2-3 hours 24/7.

So in order for her to be fine when I'm working, she's going to need to eat a small meal mid day to keep her from spiraling into hypo.

I don't mean to complain, but my life can't revolve around testing Juba every 2-3 hours. Something needs to change before I start my job, and I want to make sure she's in safe numbers.

This minimum dosage of Lantus seems to be again, too much, but maybe a mid day mini lunch would help curve her numbers better?

Advice please?

You might want to take a look at the sticky about working full time and managing your cat's diabetes. All of us who work or are in school know exactly what you mean.

We generally suggest that you don't feed after nadir. Once the insulin is past it's most active point in the cycle, there's less available to offset the effect of food. Right now, it's hard to know if feeding Juba after nadir may make a difference. Her pancreas looks like it may be waking up.

I'd suggest a timed feeder. I'm home until just after Gabby's +2 and I leave a 2 compartment feeder set up so she gets food while I'm gone. (Well, she eats if Gizmo doesn't eat what's there.)

There's no reason you can't feed her between shots....it's actually better for them to have mini-meals than 2 large ones since it doesn't stress the pancreas out so much.

An auto-feeder like the Petsafe 5 can be a Godsend or you can make foodsicles by adding water to food and freezing it in ice cube trays to leave out....most cats won't eat what they can't smell and by freezing the food, it has little smell...but several hours later when it's thawed, it's just like fresh.

Tonight Juba's PMPS was 163 and though she spirals down in a matter of hours to the 50's, I really would like her to get with a good insulin routine and keep up this 0.25u 2x/day.
I will probably be pulling an all nighter like last night, but eh, what have I got to lose.
This seems ok yeah?
Edited: I thought it was 176 when it was actually 163. Still going for it!

Sounds like you are ready and willing to monitor - I'd go for it. When they start lower, often the cycle is way flatter. It's a good idea to get a +1 and a +2 test when you are shooting your lowest to date.

Kadie, do you know that newly diagnosed cats that have their blood sugar get controlled in normal range (50-120 human glucometer ) quickly after diagnosis have a good chance of having their pancreas heal and becoming diet-controlled?

Some cats just need a diet change and a little insulin support in order to heal.

There's no way to know which cats will go off insulin and which won't, but I would encourage you to hang in there. Juba looks good on a very small dose of insulin.

Most people feed multiple times in the first half of the cycle.

A timed feeder is worth it's weight in gold for a working person. Or one that likes to sleep. I loved the Petsafe 5 compartment feeder.

Thank you guys so much for the encouragement!
It was a longer night last night, grumpy this morning, and having to recheck throughout the day.

My husband and I would absolutely love it if Juba could just be diet controlled. The price of canned food isn't an issue for us, since we're somewhat healthy eaters, we would for our kitties to be as well!

I am seriously going to look into the timed auto feeder. We would probably need to purchase 2 of them since we have 2 kitties, and are currently (but gradually) switching our other kitty (non DM) over to a wet food diet too. He's still half/half dry/wet, but he really enjoys wet food. We're feeding him the same kind as our DM Juba kitty.

So far Juba's BG numbers tonight have been in the blue. She was 163/PMPS and now 167/+1. That is great because this may be an easy night.

I will check her again at +2, and then if her numbers are somewhat steadily decreasing, I'll check her again at +4...because I'm anal and a nervous nelly!

That's not nervous - it's smart. :) Especially when she's coming down the doses and dropping low quite easily. I know it's really tough going on us humans when they make us do 2 or 3 all nighters in a row, but she really will be healthier for being well regulated or possibly even OTJ. :)
