Yesterday's condo

I think Dimitri is back on track this morning. He had eaten only about 10 minutes prior to the +2 check, so I think he should be fine.
We're heading out to church in a hour, and I'll check him when we get home.

Hi Janet,

You might want to leave some food out for Dimitri while you're gone. That way he can eat if his numbers are dropping too low while you're gone. (Getting another check in an hour - right before you leave - might be a good idea, too.)

Have a great day!

Re: 4/20 Dimitri AMP 108 +2 78

BLUE tiful AMPS today Janet!!

I guess that "furshot" last night got some juice into Dimitri after all!!

This was talked about some in yesterdays condo, but that +2 is a great test to get..I call it my "crystal ball" test because it can tell you a lot about where Dimitri is going to go later in the cycle. When you see a drop at +2, that's a real good indication that he's probably going to continue down so if you can't be home to test, it's good that you left food down. Most cats will eat when their blood sugar goes low.

If the +2 is less than the pre-shot, expect a VERY active cycle..more testing is best
If the +2 is about the same, expect a normal cycle with a gradual slide down to nadir (usually about +6 but varies from cat to cat and cycle to cycle)

Hope you had a wonderful morning at church, and you'll be able to enjoy the rest of your Easter day today!!

Looks like Dimitri likes Lantus much better than the ProZinc!

Thank you Chris and Amy. Based on his test after I got home, and the half empty plate of food, it looks like he handled things pretty
well while I was out. I'll post his PMPS later this evening.

Y'all have a wonderful afternoon!

I feel like this right now

Dimitri goes along having nice numbers, la-dee-da, and then WHAM, he gets a bad number. And I'm not sure why.
I do know that I need to be more strict with his eating times. He has this rather firm "meow" he makes when he
walks into the kitchen and sits where he food bowl gets put down, and if it's not there, he complains quite loudly,
and I usually just give in. I think he and I need to develop a schedule and *stick to it.*

Any other ideas or suggestions to lower his evening numbers?

the "Wham" is a bounce, Janet!

Looking at the numbers on your spreadsheet, you'll see a lot of pink and red numbers, so Dimitri's body isn't used to "normal" numbers! When he goes down into those lower numbers, his liver is panicking and sending sugar and hormones in because Mr. Liver thinks it's an emergency!

As Dimitri spends more and more time in lower numbers, Mr. L will have to relearn what it's like to live in normal numbers again so he doesn't think Dimitri is in trouble!

If 256 is as high as he goes, that's not a very big bounce...He could still go higher and there's not a darn thing you can do about it. Mr. L's in charge

Ah, so I'm not crazy (well, at least not about this.) Thank you Chris. I'll just be patient and wait for his liver to catch on.

i agree it's very likely a bounce, especially if he keeps going up after the pmps tonight.

there are a few things that may help about the food, however. if you are feeding him very much after his nadir, the effects of the insulin will be waning and on some cats, it can drive up the numbers. Some cats seem to be able to graze and it doesn't effect their blood sugar much. Most people try to feed most of the food in the first few hours after the shot.

I fed punkin (12-14lbs) 1 can of fancy feast with his shot and 1/2 can at +3, both am and pm cycles. If you need a no-carb snack in the second half of the cycle, boiled chicken breast might be an option. Many cats don't have a blood sugar spike from that, although a few have said their cats do have increased BGs after chicken. I've wondered if that has to do with whether or not the chicken has additives.

janet, sorry to bump up your post from yesterday. i've been trying to post a response since yesterday afternoon and the board has been unresponsive.

Anyway . . . perhaps he's over his bounce by today - i haven't had a chance to look at his spreadsheet.
