Hello, all!

A recap of yesterday's event, Tyler went to the vet for possible UTI, and was prescribed a liquid antibiotic, Orbax, which has no sugar flavoring, or any flavoring at all, I tasted it, it tasted like... well lets just say it tasted like bitter, yucks medicines. The vet did not want to attempt drawing urine from his bladder yesterday, but said that Orbax is what he usually uses to treat a UTI. He said if Tyler did not appear to be urinating any or very little by morning, then to bring him back today. Also, did give me a little vile to try and catch Tyler doing his business, unfortunately I had to work both jobs last night so I missed my opportunities. This morning, there were two clumps from Tyler but I am second guessing myself if they seemed normal size for him. They were large, but like I said, I'm second guessing myself if they were Tyler's norm. But he is going, so that is positive.

I'm not even 100% certain if he wasn't going, but with the accident with him peeing on my new roommate's bed, raised a warning flag, so I was may have been looking for something to be wrong! I'm trying to keep a watchful eye on him best I can with my schedule. I had to school and both jobs yesterday, so when I got home, I was toast!

Today I'm off, but have a ton of homework to do. I am going to try and catch him when makes a pit stop, but it's rare that I am around when that happens! Wish me luck!

Hi guys .. I hope the meds help Tyler with his possible UTI .. It sounds like you had one heck of a long day yesterday .. hope the homework isn't too hard today and you can catch a few cat naps .. I'm going out of town today so have a great weekend!

Unfortunately, he did not hold the medicine down. My poor, poor buddy, I hate having to do that to him. I am going to keep an eye on him this evening and try to get that urine sample. Maybe I can get the pill and try that.

UTI can mean infection or inflammation. Abs do no good for an inflammation, so without the test you really don't know if the expense and hassle of administering abs is worth it. And actually, now that you have started giving Orbax getting the test done wouldn't do much good. It needs to be done before starting the abs. Most vets can do an in house analysis to see IF there is bacteria present and what shape, but they can't tell the actual type of bacteria. If it is rod shaped it is probably e-coli and Orbax is great for that. To know what the actual culprit is it needs to be sent out for Culture and Sensitivity (C&S) and that can take several days. They can start on abs right away after that in house test and adjust it later if the C&S shows a different AB would be better for the specific bacteria. The cystocenthesis (needle draw) is needed if you are going to go to the expense of the C&S. Free catch samples are too easily contaminated from bacteria on the bum from feces.

Tess just got a UTI yesterday too, but it is a recurring problem w/ her and we know the drill. She also gets Orbax. I like the liquid better, cats can be amazingly tricky w/ pills and you find them much later. It is malt flavored and most cats don't mind it. Tyler is probably reacting more to the indignity of you squirting anything in his mouth. Never had any foaming problem w/ Orbax. Orbax also doesn't upset Tess's stomach. W/ Clavamox she would stop eating and puke like clockwork after getting her dose.

How are you giving it to him? There is a bit of a gap behind the canines on the side of the mouth. Try to get the syringe in there, not straight from the front. It is easier and you don't need to open Tyler's mouth all the way, just work it between his teeth and squirt. Going from the side also prevents him from inhaling it, which is bad.

Did you get any pain meds? UTIs can be very painful. The frequent squatting and peeing all over is because it hurts to pee and they start to associate it w/ the litter box. Once you deal w/ the pain they will hold it linger and use the litter box. Usually Buprenorphine is used. It is a liquid too, our vet gives it to us in pre-measured oral syringes. To give it to Tyler you just need to get the end of the syringe under his lip, not past his teeth. It is absorbed through the gums and just squirted into the cheek pocket.

Sorry about the pukus! When did you give it in relation to food. We were advised an hour before or 2 hours after food. Or it could have benn if you shot it straight down his throat.

Poor Tyler. UTIs are no fun, and getting yucky liquid AB squirted in your mouth is almost as bad. My civvie Harvey had a UTI recently, and he was given Clavamox liquid at first, which he detested. It was almost impossible to get enough in him to do any good, so we switched to pills. That worked well, as he loves pill pockets. I hope you find a method that works for Tyler and get this thing knocked out.

Thank you, everyone for chiming in.

He advised me to give it about 10 minutes before feeding. After giving him the food, up it all came. I did shoot in with his mouth open and did it as if I was giving a pill, and so far it has taken two tries each time. The approach going in the side of the mouth may work, but he knows what is coming and is. a. fighter. and boy, is he strong! He says; "NO, DADDY! NO!" and wiggles like a worm

With all due respect, as far as what is prescribed, I am going to adhere to my vet's advice right now. I just wanted to post what is going on to be thorough. I will post updates when available!

Now Tyler!! You stop that nonsense! Your daddybean is just trying to help! Be a big boy and take your medicine!

It's always hardest on us beans, Brian! We understand why we're doing what we're doing...our kitties just think we've gone stark raving mad!!

Hopefully squirting in the side will work a little better, or you'll have to try pills. China used to be absolutely impossible!(and I worked with vets years ago and knew how to pill a cat) but when it came to China, I'd ask for something I could shoot instead!

Just recently, she's been started on an antihistamine which is only available in a pill, so I've been using a pill gun. I've been shocked that I've been able to get it into her! But a quick pry open of her mouth, push on the pill gun and a blow on her nose (that makes them swallow) and it's been going down!

Well, PMPS was a high blue. I imagine, it's higher due to the traumatic experience of shooting the AB in his mouth!

He has been urinating like regular since yesterday evening. I managed to snag a sample in the vile given by the vet, hopefully the AB didn't affect it, but who knows! I know that I'm still keeping my eye on him but he seems perfectly normal. When I caught him doing his business tonight he did not seem to be showing any signs of discomfort nor hesitation of climbing in the littler box. I observed the entire process, and he seemed perfectly normal. I won't let my guard down.

Tyler has now peed on the couch. Great. I have a urine sample to give my vet tomorrow morning, but I am really wondering if it is my roommate. He walked in the door while I was cleaning the couch, and said he was sitting right where Tyler urinated earlier that day. I don't really know, but if it turns out not to be a UTI, I don't know what I am going to do... I really don't know. I really don't know my roommate very well, so I don't know what kind of person he really is but he seems like a pretty good guy. I took him in so I can save money to move, but how convenient that Tyler decides to start peeing where this guy has been. And all this is after he kind of pissed Tyler off and kind of had him cornered and even got hissed at. The new roommate even told me he had a prior experience with another roommate's cat who defecated in his pillowcase... so... I don't really know what to think. All I know is that I'm really ready for my streak of bad luck to end.
 
If Tyler's peeing is territorial due to the new person, you could try Feliway plug-ins. They are unscented (to us) but give off a scent to cats that relaxes them and can help reduce marking.

Wendy has a good point!

While cats don't pee out of "spite", if Tyler is very much a one man cat, he could be marking the territory and basically telling the new roommate that this is HIS house, and HIS bean, and he doesn't particularly want to share.

The Feliway is worth a try..there are also cat calming collars you could try. I've seen several people here who've had pretty good results with them
