Hi there,

Been having an 'interesting' time with H over the last couple of days.

He was on the dose of 1.25 (following the protocol) however I was away over the weekend and Hubs was doing his shots and tests so I left any dosing increase alone whilst I was away.

I upped him to the 1.5 when I came back and he was OK for a couple of days but yesterday took me by surprise. It hasn't helped that he has been being fussy over the cat food so I have had to mix in some stinkier stuff to get him to eat (The Sheba is about 15% carbs - depending on what calc you use!). I haven't given him a whole serving of the Sheba BTW- just enough to mix in to make the Bozita smell more appealing! I will get some tinned Tuna in too to mix in his food as that is lower carb and usually has the same results - although you have to watch him with the fussiness at the mo. The Bozita is being eaten eventually but I currently have my mums cat staying over so it's hard to tell who has had what (mums cat is getting less as he hates the Bozita even more!)

Be interested in your thoughts. (For anyone who hasn't read my profile we're in the UK, the Bozita food is between 4-8% carbs or less depending on the flavour)

Many thanks

Jax

Hi Jax, I share your frustration over offering food to our picky DM kitties. I am giving Wiskas Chicken w tuna or Wiskas Chicken w turkey which is supposed to be a low carb. We dont have Fancy Feast in HK. Yes, we've Sheba here too!

Jax --

I'm not sure why you dropped the dose back to 1.25u. It's possible that Harry dropped below 50 but there's no way to know for sure. If his numbers don't come back down, I'd increase the dose back to 1.5u.

Really? I thought the reading of 2.9 was really scary low? THat's why I put him back to the 1.25 (cos I panicked!)

Hi Jax,

How are you doing?

I've just been looking at Harry's numbers. The preshots are starting to come down now the Lantus shed is kicking in, I think?

2.9 is a comfortable number for a non-diabetic cat, but it may not be comfortable for Harry as his system is used to higher numbers at the moment. Saying that, he hasn't bounced up into the red numbers following this nice green, though, has he? So he might quite quickly get used to the idea of spending longer in the greens & blues....& the longer he spends in the greens & blues, the better it will be for his little pancreas. liver & kidneys.

I agree with Sienne. Stick to the 1.5U at the moment & keep watching.

Panic is completely understandable!! The next time you start to see numbers dropping, how about posting? We can walk you through the process. If you take a look at the Tight Regulation Protocol, it specifies that a dose reduction is given when numbers drop below 50. You don't want Harry to drop too far below 50 or sit in those lower numbers overly long. (Think of it like dipping your toe in the water.)

You may want to take a look at the sticky on Shooting and Handling Low Numbers. The section at the end will provide written instructions on what to do is numbers are dropping so that you have some guidelines on how to steer numbers with food. You could also take a look at Zoey's condo or [urlhttp://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=93442]Moo's condo[/url] from last night. They are good examples of how to manage numbers using high and low carb food.

Great advice - thanks.

That's the lowest number I've ever had off him so deffo a panic moment! It seems his nadirs are later on in the day. This is a good week to keep his dose at 1.5 as I am working at home today and tomorrow - just not on Friday but hubs is at home on Friday so can test for me.

I will post back later with the PMPS and we can go from there?

I wasn't in the zone to post yesterday, I am a bit shy about how often I can test compared to some people as it does vary a lot depending on my workload, and if I have sick kids or not :?

If you can get pre-shot tests and at least one test in both the AM and PM cycle, that's fine. We do understand that there are "trivial" things like work or caring for your kids that may interfere with getting checks during a cycle!! Just do keep in mind that if you see lower numbers, you may need to test more to insure your kitty is safe. I'm admittedly a testaholic but I also have a kitty that's prone to drama.
