Biscuits wants to eat every 2 hours. He eats after am shot, 3 oz ff classic pate and maybe some more. Then around +3 or +4 , 1/2 can ff ,(I will test 2 hours after he eats )Feed again at around +8 , 1/2 can ff or more. then after pmps and shot 1 can ff or more. He's not on a regular schedule. I've been told just to let him eat at will because with the continued high numbers, he's not utilizing his food. His last feeding is after bedtime test , around +4. No food until amps which is almost always high. Could his feedings affect his numbers? Am I feeding too much? He screams for food and when he is full , settles down and is happy! i"ve been looking at ACRO/IAA posts and seeing a high number kitty question regarding feeding schedule.
Any ideas?

Sorry to see Biscuits still staying so high. Hope you can get some answers soon about why he seems to need more and more insulin.
 
Do not be surprised if your vet tells you that acro is a "rare" condition. It's a whole lot less rare than once thought. (I think the numbers are around 25% of cat's have acro.) Often the "Humor me." approach works especially since you're the one paying for the tests. We've heard about quite a number of red faced vets who get the results and are surprised that a caregiver has a cat with acro and/or insulin resistance. At a 7u dose, it's time to get Biscuits tested.

As for appetite, both the high numbers and if present, the acro (abnormal growth hormone) will cause your kitty to be hungry. The best way to tell if you're giving too much food is to check your cat's weight and make sure he's not getting too "fluffy."
 
My vet actually mentioned acromegaly a while back but we were still playing with dosing. I think she'll be ok with that.
He's only lost 2 oz I . about 6 most .So food must be ok.
I'm afraid to ask, just how much do they charge to send the blood tests? The lab charge isn't high. Just vet charge. Mine is pretty expensive.
 
The MSU lab charges aren’t bad, but you have to add the cost of the vet blood draw and prep, then the shipping. so costs will vary depending on how far you are from Michigan. In Canada, I also had some “blood across the border” nonsense added. We have seen some vets double the MSU charges for profit. You should be paying less than 200 for both. We suggest getting both IAA and acromegaly done at the same to save on shipping and blood draw costs. Insist on the IAA, we have had a few vets drop it cause they thought it wasn’t worth doing, in spite of it being asked for. It is worth getting and so little imcrememtal cost. I had to use the “humour me” approach. Clinic owner vet called them “exotic tests”, later admitted I knew more than him on acromegaly. And if you thought the bar was low for knowledge on feline diabetes amongst vets, acro way more so. Vets of a certain age were taught, this is acromegaly, you will never see it. Glad to hear yours has been paying attention to more recent research.

As Sienne said, use your scale as a guide to how much to feed. If acro, then excess growth hormone (and IGF-1) will be contributing to bone and muscle growth. Think teenage boy appetite. Biscuit may literally be growing. Combined with high numbers, he may need more food. You don’t want him to continue to lose weight. I switched to raw food and as a result, needed to feed less volume for the same food value/calorie intake.
 
Ears are slowly getting better. I can see between the bruises!
Going to test+6 now
Vet is getting back to me tomorrow about testing and cost. She's as puzzled as I am!
 
Also, she mentioned that she was going to check the panel. Are the tests included in a panel. ? Wondering
 
The tests are not included in any panel. Would be interesting to know the name of the panel, there are re many of them. She may be thinking additional tests.
