Good morning! I need to go out this morning, so was debating not shooting Pearl. @Marje and Gracie gave me good advice, and somehow the FDMB didn't load for me this morning (I am sure it was user/browser error), so I missed the advice.

So I ended up shooting Pearl, who is on the verge of another reduction with early NADIRs. U-g-h. And just now my plans got changed so that I'm able to be home a bit longer, which I am so thankful for!

And when I do leave, I already have the HC (well, it's MC but for Pearl is functions as HC since she is supremely carb sensitive) down and ready to go.

Surf safely kitties!

I know it was late your time when I posted. I’m glad you could be with her longer so you could control the BG a little more before you left. She’s looking great!

Margaret, when someone says "my cat is carb sensitive" does that just mean that they don't do well with carbs and need to be on the lowest carb food possible? Or no carbs at all?

If you look at our early days with FD on Pearl's SS, you'll see that whenever I gave Pearl food higher than 0% carbs, it spiked her BG (at the time, I didn't even know what I was giving was 0%, I thought it was like 5%. And what I was calling "MC" at the time was only 3% carbs (and I thought it was like 12%) - so it's kind of an accident how we discovered - Marje helped - that Pearl had carb-sensitivity issues). As she becomes more regulated, she is more tolerant of carbs. ECID, I can only speak to how Pearl interacts with the carbs and her sensitivity level. Other cats behave differently. But for Pearl, it means we stay on a 0% diet, when she is staying Green then she can generally handle a 3% diet. And for Pearl it means that when she goes under 50, I give 13% and not like 20%+ like most of you probably do (at least at this point - as she becomes more tolerant of holding the carbs ok, I may have to increase this %). It's a journey and experiment.

And just to make sure I am being clear: most cats are not carb-sensitive like this. Following the advice of the FDMB on what is LC, MC, and HC and when to administer each is the safest course of action. (I am saying this for all the people who may be reading and not writing, and getting confused on how to handle their own cats - if you think your cat is carb-sensitive, tag a moderator and get some help. Don't try messing with food if you don't know what you are doing yourself).

Thank you for the explanation. Makes sense. I sometimes wonder if the total lack of carbs is a good idea for a cat but you have made it clear that some cats don't need any carbs in their diets and those cats are carb sensitive.

Just remember that a zero carb food does not mean there are no carbs. It means the calories from carbs is 0% when taken into account with fats and proteins which might have levels high enough to offset the % of calories from carbs or the carbs might have been so small on a DMB that it’s less than reportable. When looking at the as-feds or DMB of many of these foods, there is a often small amount of carbs in the ones where the % calories from carbs is 0.
