4/16 Brownie AMPS 352 - torbutrol question

Brownie went to the vet again yesterday - he was in extreme pain in his right flank. I had given him 100cc squids there the day before. The vet found that his creatinine had dropped from 3.5 a week ago to 2.2! Xrays showed only degenerative changes due to old age, but nothing acute. She believes that he has a muscle or connective tissue injury due to the frequent squids. I was trying to give him 100cc every other day instead of the 200cc 2/week. She wants me to go back to 200cc 2/week. He is on 2.5mg torbutrol twice/day (she felt that Bupe would be too hard on his kidneys). He has responded well to the meds - he seems to feel much better today. She wants me to continue the torbutrol for another day or so and then go back to aspirin (3/4 tablet every 3 days). Could either the pain or the torbutrol be responsible for his high bgs? Any input would be appreciated. Have a great Fursday, LL!

Don't know about torbutrol and BG's. It could be the pain. Torbutrol doesn't last very long for pain; it's not my favourite pain med. See http://vettechs.blogspot.com/2007/07/fo ... gesic.html

Is there a reason why you're giving fluids in the flank? Most of us do it in the scruff. Meowzi doesn't like flank shots (that's where she gets her insulin - I can't imagine sticking a SQuid harpoon in her flank. IMO, also disagree with her twice-a-week SQuids. You don't drink 3 x 8 x 8oz cups of water twice a week and hope it lasts three days through the next two days before you get to drink again.

I give the squids kind of between his scruff and his flank. I switch sides each time. It's the way the vet showed me. I give his insulin a little bit further up (only about 1 inch higher in his scruff). So, I guess I don't exactly give the squids in his flank - sorry for the confusion. Should I be giving the squids right where I give his insulin? And what pain meds do you recommend that are easy on kidneys? I looked at the articles, but couldn't quite figure out what he was recommending... Thanks. :) BTW, Brownie was at 221 for his PMPS, which is WAY better, but still about 100 points too high - sigh...
