AMPS-387
+2-341 (1/2 pred dose)

Good Morning! Latte gets a GOLD star in her subject line today for doing so well last night and this a.m.! Im biting my tongue on these numbers, though. I went to bed WAY early, even though I had yet to see her eat because I knew she had enough food in her from during the day. It could have caused problems for us this a.m. with vomiting, but I took the risk as I could barely keep my eyes open. Sure enough, she ate...ANOTHER bowl of kibble. :?

Latte was up and about when I woke (drinking water, of course). She was sitting in the hallway as I got her shot ready (normal behavior!), has been going between water, food, hallway lounging, and throne in the last few hrs. She looks a little like us beans after eating Thanksgiving dinner - full and relaxed. And, no peeing self in last 24hrs. Some purrs, and lots of blinks from across the room. It was really nice not to stress about getting food in her since she had eaten so much already, and would most definately be high no matter how much or little she ate this a.m.

Because the extra pred seemed to help so much by just giving once, I made the executive decision to only give 1/2 this a.m. She certainly needs to eat and keep it down. BUT, she does not need to eat twice the amount of calories she should have in one day. I wonder if dbling the amount was overkill. Or, maybe it needed to be in order to give her that jump start. Im also hoping it will bump her numbers down just a weeeeeeeee bit. Hopefully I will connect with her vet today, who said I didnt even have to give the pred if I changed my mind, and see what he thinks. Maybe one more day at the most? *fingers crossed*

Gotta run...gonna be late for work.

I hope Latte continues to have a comfortable day.

Happy last day till the weekend!

Looks like Latte had another party with her kibble bowl while I was at work. Not quite as much as yesterday, but pretty close. Her pred was cut in half this a.m., so I was surprised she at that much. Tons of water gone as well. Good to see numbers going down a weee little bit. I will give her pred at +2 tonight in order to give her a little time to maybe go down.

Spoke with vet today. I was working, so it had to be kind of quick. I will have to pick up a copy this weekend for further examination. Some, not so good. But COULD be much worse. Culture still growing, but no infection based on u/a. Sugar in urine, so she must have gone up quickly as soon as we opened the door to the clinic. So much for vet stress lowering her numbers!

The yuck news, kidney values rising. Creatinine has been on the increase since Jan. She went from 2.7 last check in Feb to 3.4 yesterday. This is an all time high since the ARF started resolving itself and turning into crf. Her bicarb is still too low, so Im assuming the metabolic acidosis is the same or possibly worse. The metabolic acidosis speeds up the renal failure. I dont think I have fully processed this information quite yet.

I will give the extra pred for another day or two and then see how she does without.

She's been sleepy since I got home @ her +10. Mostly under the piano, some throne and hallway time. Very gurgly tummy. She has been happy for all the ear skritches. Guess we will just see how tonight plays out.

With these high numbers and food in her tummy from earlier today, I may try to break a record and get another 6-7hrs of sleep tonight!

he did not feel she had any obvious pain in her abdomen, after 2 exams (pre and post urinating). He did not think it was a pancreatitis flare. He was releaved she felt better once her bladder was empty, as it was so large and she was so tense, he thought there may be a growth (tumor).

hi Carolyn -- cutting and pasting from here and the days i missed too !
Q -- what did your vet base his determination of her not having any CP issues?
the abdominal palpitation? If so that is not the determining factor ( i have heard of many vets who think it is so that's why i am assuming. ) also cats are so good at hiding pain even from vets poking at them :)
this is from texas a&m gastro lab:

Cats, even with severe pancreatitis, present with less specific clinical signs than do dogs. In a recent review of a large number of cats with pancreatitis the following clinical signs were reported: anorexia in 87%, lethargy in 81%, dehydration in 54%, weight loss in 47%, vomiting and hypothermia in 46%, icterus in 37%, fever in 25%, abdominal pain in 19%, diarrhea in 12%, and a palpable abdominal mass in 11%. Especially remarkable in this report is the low incidence of vomiting and abdominal pain in cats with pancreatitis.

I know it is hard to pull apart what is going on when latte is juggling so many things--- but sometimes you just have to treat and see what kind of response you get. the pred helps the cp. ( of course it will also help ibd but they are very interconnected)

from my experience doubling would not be overkill. and yes a jump start is good. it will settle in her system and the eating will not be as voracious as in the start. If it were me -- I would keep it up for a set time -- 2-4 weeks at least and then taper back. if symptoms get worse then up again. But if you have already gone to 7.5 mg instead of 10mg total and want to give it a try that is, of course up to you and your vet.
please don't make your decision on her bg numbers. yes they will be up and they will settle a bit and you will need to increase lantus or learn how to use R.
If you decide you would like to try that technique ( and to those reading: this is not a beginner tool and should only be done with the guidance of someone who has experience using it) let me know.
you can get R otc w/o a script.

if you are worried about too much kibble -- can you leave out only so much or put in timed feeder?
will she eat her other food now too? and didn't she lose some wt so it's ok for her to put a little wt on?

The yuck news, kidney values rising. Creatinine has been on the increase since Jan. She went from 2.7 last check in Feb to 3.4 yesterday. I know latte's hx. just wanted to let you know that Winnie's values would go up w/ cp flares.
Have you thought about calcitriol or azodyl?

I will give the extra pred for another day or two and then see how she does without.

again, I really don't think that is enough time to have any lasting effect on what is going on w/ her.
You need to knock out the inflammation -- whether from cp or ibd .
what does your vet say about this?

She's been sleepy since I got home @ her +10. Mostly under the piano, some throne and hallway time. Very gurgly tummy.

not to be indelicate -- but what does latte's output look like? any weird colors or greasiness?
does she get any prozyme in her food ( a pre biotic ) is a plant based enzyme and might help her digest easier, if she is not already on . of course, the borborygmus (gurgles) is probably related to a tummy full of food that has not seen that much in it for a while, kwim?

With these high numbers and food in her tummy from earlier today, I may try to break a record and get another 6-7hrs of sleep tonight!

I hope you did get lots of good sleep.
I'm glad she is doing better.
she will drink more w/ the extra roid for a bit anyways.

will look for your update. am hoping the pred continues to help and perks her up.
