LAB RESULTS
So Gordy had his senior tests done when he was at the vet Saturday... I got the below email from the vet who attended him.... Im attaching the PDF of the results, but I'll fill in the sheet tonight.
"Good morning, this is Dr. Silverness. Here are Gordy's lab results.
Several values are out of range. His blood sugar came back very low. This
could either be a false artifact from the serum not being 100% separated in
the collection tube or it could be real. The only way to know if he is
crashing too low during the day would be to do a full day glucose curve.
The fructosamine level is a little helpful with giving me a better overall
regulation picture, but it will not tell me if he is going too low. Has he
been acting lethargic at any point during the day?
Second, his total T4 is high. This typically indicated hyperthyroidism.
He has lost about 1.5-2 pounds over the last year so this may be real or it
could be a false elevation from other issues. There is a verification Free
T4 by ED test that we could run to improve our confidence in this diagnosis
before we start him on thyroid meds, or we can just start him and monitor
with a follow up T4 level 4-6 weeks later. IF he is hyperthyroid and we
miss it, his Diabetes will surely be affected.
The elevated CK is du eto muscle loss or inflammation. Recent weigh tloss
would explain this.
His urine is also very dilute. The diabetes can do this, however there was
not any sugar in his urine at this time, so he likely also now has early
stage renal disease.
For now I would suggest we either bring him in again to repeat an in house
blood sugar and send out a Free T4 by ED, OR start him on oral thyroid
medications now and monitor labs again in 4-6 weeks.
Please call at your earliest convenience with your preference."
