4/15 - AMPS

Brad didn't need any insulin last night, and this AM he is sticking around 160s. I checked him early this AM and it was 167 about an hour after eating. Then I just checked at the time he would normally get his shot, and it was 165.

He seems to be in the "in between" stage of not needing insulin but being a tad higher than normal. I know not to shoot at this range, but what do you normally do when they are in this number? Maybe even smaller, more frequent feedings throughout the day? Are there other tips to naturally lower his sugar a bit in addition to the food?

This is definitely the tricky part. 167 is still a diabetic number - too far above that upper range in the 40-120 range to be non diabetic. So you want to support the pancreas with insulin while not overdosing the cat.

Check out the pictures of mini doses on this page (about half way down): viewtopic.php?f=9&t=18139 They are demonstating with Lantus so you do need to use the conversion chart.

Or you would put in .25 and squirt some out - in hopes of getting around .1 (If you check out the remission spreadsheets in the post above, you could also send a private message to one of the people who did the mini dosing to get ideas.) I have to admit I did not have to do mini doses but many people have.

I would give a mini dose at this number, feed small frequent meals and test - particularly in that +3 - +7 range. And breathe. Ths phase should not last long....

And I have to add. It has worked for some people to wait it out and see if the cat can just bring himself down. If mini doses are just too scary, wait him out and see what he does.....

Okay, I think I may wait it out a bit without the mini dose to see what happens. It'll be a good test to see how well his body may or may not be producing insulin. This will give me some time to research on how to give mini doses, too. Thanks Sue! Be back later!

No it doesn't look GOOD---It looks GREAT!!!

I hope it continues for you and Bradley! I love his name!

That sounds great. Is that after feeding? If so, that means food brings down bg and you can use that to your advantage. Lots of small meals....

I got the first reading this AM of 167 one hour after eating, then the 165 two hours after eating, then the 121 three hours after eating. So from that, it seems it takes three hours for his sugar to come down after eating. I'll continue to check throughout the day.

Yay Bradley! He seems really, really close (paws crossed, anti jinx). Yes, this in between stage can be a little tricky, especially when you still feel like a newbie. I was one that waited it out, looking back I may have been overly cautious but I was a newbie. Max didn't go much higher than the 150-170 range and would drop on his own, so I kept testing and held off on insulin. Within a day or two he was down in the non-diabetic numbers on his own (greens/high double digits). Some kitties get there on their own and some need just a little boost (micro dose, .1u) in the between stage. Can't wait to see what Bradley does.
