AMPS 440 - fed 1/3 raw chicken meal
+1 - fed 1/3 raw chicken meal
+2 - fed 1sp of LC raw chicken (5.5 % carb)
+3 - fed 1/6 raw chicken meal + 1sp 5.5 chicken meal.

Yesterday was a yellow surf http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=68645
But I think today will be better! A bit of a steep drop for the first couple of hours, so I know we'll pay the penalty later today like we did yesterday.

I've send out inquiries to the manufacturers of the raw food that Neko eats requesting carb % and got the first reply back so I'm starting to get a better picture of the amount of carbs she is getting. The main one (Red Dog Blue Cat Deli) has max 2-3% veggies with all their proteins so I presume it is lower but am still waiting a reply. irRAWsistible is 5.5% for chicken and 3.5 for turkey but I know they have more veggies. Their product comes in small nuggets so I just use it as snack or supplement - not the main meal but it looks like it'll be a suitable LC food. Natural Instincts (this morning's meal) has no veggies but am still awaiting an answer. When I get all this together I'll post the numbers for anyone who wants to feed raw in western Canada.

This morning I had a visit from a friend of mine who used to work at the local animal shelter. We did an informal look at the teeth. Neko has never had a dental and I don't remember the vet looking at her teeth in her last wellness exam in December. A year before she had noticed a tiny bit of tartar in the back, which I had already noticed, but the teeth were otherwise fine. The informal check noticed a slightly darker pink around a couple of the canines, but they aren't warmer to the touch and definitely not red. I think I'll mention it to the vet when next I talk to her but I don't think it's an immediate concern. Neko has no problem ripping into raw chicken necks, so her mouth isn't sore, and I think over time they'll help keep her teeth clean. With all the kitties here seeing such improvements from dentals, it's something I've been thinking about.

+4 152

She is looking like a rainbow kitty today.

Nice to see Neko in blue.

Wendy....in order to know the exact % calories from carbs in a food...canned or raw, you need to ask for the "as fed" values. Alot of companies want to give you their guaranteed analysis or they'll just say that carbs make up a certain % of the diet. But it isn't the way we calculate the % calories from carbs.

You need the % of fat, protein, water (moisture), ash, fiber, and if they have it, carbs. Alot of them don't have it but you can calculate it because all of those components should add to 100.
If they don't give you carbs, then add all the others together and subtract from 100 and that would be the carbs.

Then, put your percentages in the following table and it will calculate the % calories from carbs for you:

Please let me know if you have questions.

Re: 4/14 Neko AMPS 440 +3 212 +4 152 +5 97 Green!

+5 97 - first official green!! Wahoo!!!

I also checked the same sample on the Bayer Contour - it said 6.5 (aka 117). That isn't quite a green but getting close. Probably within error of the meters. This batch of Relion test strips has been less than easy to wick up, so I've occasionally tested with the Bayer as well which is supposed to need a larger drop of blood but I find the Relion needs a larger one to actually "see" the blood.

Thanks Marjorie - I do have the "as fed" numbers for the vendor that I use for her main meals. Tonight's dinner is 4.1% carb according to her spreadsheet so nicely within LC. I still have to get the "as fed" from the other vendors.

Re: 4/14 Neko AMPS 440 +3 212 +4 152 +5 97 Green!

Did you run the as fed values through the calculator sheet I attached?

YAY!!

Re: 4/14 Neko AMPS 440 +3 212 +4 152 +5 97 Green!

Marjorie, I did use the spreadsheet you provided for tonight's dinner. Venison - so I expect some bounce tonight! Red Dog Deli is the only vendor that provides "as fed" numbers on their package, so I'll have to contact the others.
So far it's
- venison 4.1
- chicken 5.5
- kangaroo and lamb packages don't have the "as fed" analysis on them so I'll have to ask for that. I know kangaroo is a newer meat for them so they may not have done the analysis yet. Veggies will still be 2-3% of the mix so I'm expecting numbers in the same range.

Re: 4/14 Neko AMPS 440 +3 212 +4 152 +5 97 +6 136 +8 306

+8 306

This has the beginnings of a wicked bounce. Any suggestions on how to slow down the drop? Although I like to see the green, I can guess what ugly colour is going to be at PMPS. Poor rainbow kitty.

Re: 4/14 Neko AMPS 440 +3 212 +4 152 +5 97 +6 136 +8 306

The only way that may help to slow a drop is to feed a bit of LC food. It's hard to know at this point what Neko's pattern is. It does look like when she decides to leave the higher numbers, she heads down the slope in a hurry. I think you're going to have to play this by ear and when you see a good sized drop, give a teaspoon or so of LC food.

Re: 4/14 Neko PMPS 580

Thanks Sienne. As you can see, Neko rockets back up even faster than she went down. Fast drop and lowest ever numbers. Sigh! At least I get another early to bed pass.

I did give Neko some food each hour +1, +2, +3 and +4. I'm still trying to find out the carb % of the food she had for breakfast and +1, but they don't add any veggies so I imagine it's pretty low. The food she had for the rest of the snacks was in the LC category and about 1-2 tsp.

Re: 4/14 Neko PMPS 580

Ouch on that PMPS. Mookie has had more than his share of black numbers too, and it's hard to see. When Mookie is very high I engage him in play, because exercise helps to bring down BG numbers -- at least in humans, so I figure it will in cats, too. I noticed on Neko's SS that you've been regular about getting ketone tests, which is very very good. :YMHUG:

Re: 4/14 Neko PMPS 580

Randa - thanks for the tip on play. Although right now she doesn't want to move out of the kitchen in case she'd miss out on some food. The high numbers make her starved even more. She isn't in the mood for play now. We did get in a yard patrol this afternoon before dinner when I knew her numbers were starting to shoot up. And yes, I did manage to get another ketone test in tonight.

Re: 4/14 Neko PMPS 580 +3 230

+3 230 - holy skydiving Batman! Put on the brakes! I thought I had an early to bed pass.

I managed to get Neko playing with the mice under the newspaper before I tested her but now I'm going to have to do some more checks tonight. At least now she is on her night sleeping chair which means she isn't expecting more food.

Re: 4/14 Neko PMPS 580 +3 230

Just when you're thinking about bed and getting a good night of sleep.... Time to make a cup of tea (or a cocktail) and splash some cold water on your face!

Neko's first green is very exciting  - I double tested when I got my first one too! and what a way to clear a bounce you just got to start flattening it out a bit now Neko
