Babu's 4/13

Good Morning everyone!

As I said at some point during the night I celebrated a little bit too soon, he did dived last night :banghead:, and got as low as 39 and a/d wasn't enough I had to give him really really high carb food (hill's k/d which is 27% carbs), which probably explains this morning's 94. Thank you very much @Tricia Cinco(GA) & Harvey for all your help and support.

Given last night's events I've tried to give him a reduction or so I hope, because as what I did was measure how many drops I was giving him and as it turns there were two in his previous dose so this morning I think left only one, is really hard to be really sure.

Does this make sense ?

What are the next steps after this ?

Sorry about the late night but this is super exciting! See if Babu will agree with staying on a "drop" but it appears to me he may be ready to start an OTJ trial. If he goes low again the trial starts or if he stays green for 7 days. IMO if you're having to feed food with 27% carbs on barely a drop or so of insulin he's ready. Lets see what others have to say. @Wendy&Neko , @Marje and Gracie

I think taking him down in dose is a good choice, he's looking good but with those blues just a few days ago he probably could do with some continued insulin support, as it has generally been found that if you can continue with some insulin support you can achieve a stronger remission, but you may need to manage the BG with some higher LC or even MC to keep him in safe greens.

Another way of getting just a little insulin into him is to press the plunger on the syringe quite firmly, insert into the pen while still applying firm pressure then once in the pen release the plunger, some insulin will be sucked into the syringe, I found this to be just less than a drop of insulin. You could practice with some water and a used syringe see how it works for you.

Veronica

So normally you are feeding him LC food, yes? Not the 12% each meal? Just want to be sure we understand as a few of us are discussing this.

One of us will post some thoughts in a bit. Great job, Babu and Veronica!!

Yes is not in 12% only, I would say he is getting half of his food LC and half 12%.

Just tested and I think I did gave him the drop after all, since he's already at 74.

I'm ok continuing with the insulin as long as necessary what ever is best for him.

I've been practicing since last night that measuring that drop just to try and get it consistent, I'm using the insulin pen, I really want to get it right and with this micro doses I can spare some, plus I think insulin is the only thing that is cheaper down here that what it is in the US (food certanly isn't)

Veronica,

Some of us have been talking about Babu, and we think you have a couple of options: You can continue to feed the 12% as half of each meal, and give the one drop of insulin twice a day as long as Babu agrees. Or you can switch to all low carb food and start an OTJ trial. Of course, Babu may make this decision for you by going below 50 again, in spite of the 12%.

If you want to go ahead and start a trial, let me know and I will give you the instructions. Either way, we're all very excited about how well Babu is doing! You have done an amazing job getting him to this point and should be very proud! :D:)

I'm so exited of how well he is doing too!! :D:D:D

For what I have been reading it seems that there are better odds the longer he can stay with the insulin, so I think I want to try to give the one drop as long as possible. Specially considering that he did had some blues barely a week ago.

But since he may not agree with my decision, please do give me the instructions for the OTJ trial just to be prepared, he seems to be making all he can to get out of insulin he just started running around a little while ago, and he has never been the active type

Need less to say I'm really really thankful to you all for all your help and support

We thought you might feel that way, and we agree it's not a bad idea. He will let you know if he disagrees. I am out of the house right now, but when I get home I will post them for you.

@Tricia Cinco(GA) & Harvey , I can help out from time to time ;)

@Veronica & Babu-chiri , below are the trial instructions...I'm so very excited for your both :woot::woot:

Start the trial on the next green pre shot.

If he/she is green at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time; just feed small meals and go about your day. If he/she is blue at your normal "PS", feed a small meal and test again after about 3 or 4 hours. If his/her number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then the pancreas is working!

Post every day so we can monitor your progress and see if any tweaks are needed. He/she may have a sporadic blue number. Don't panic but post before you decide whether to shoot so we can have a discussion.

After 14 days of no insulin, we have a party!!

Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens; we just give him/her the support needed. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on.

Good luck with the trial!!!

Once he/she is through the trial successfully, you enter a new phase. Your cat is still diabetic but has now become diet-controlled. Continue feeding low carb food in the manner successful for your kitty. If you decide to change his/her feeding schedule, let your meter be your guide to the best times to feed. Avoid medications with sugar in them and steroid medications unless they are medically essential. Continue testing blood glucose weekly for the first month and then monthly forever. It's a good idea to weigh him/her monthly. Weight should remain stable. If he/she seems "off" or sick, or is showing signs of diabetes (excessive drinking, eating, urinating, weight loss), test his/her blood glucose right away. Keep the teeth and gums clean and healthy; dental issues can bring a cat out of remission. If you see rising blood glucose numbers, it's time for a visit to the vet!
