Gus is not himself this afternoon, it started with decreased appetite and sleeping a lot. In the morning he nibbled a bit but later refused all food including liver. He is just staying in his bed and not purring when I pet him. I just given him 4mg Cerenia and observing him. If there is no improvement I am going to give him 0.3mg Buprenor? We have meds from the vet. in case his pancreatitis attack. This is a first time I see him so lethargic and obviously in pain.

I'm so sorry Gus isn't feeling well and not wanting to eat. Do you have any baby food you could try and see if he'll eat? Sending prayers.

Carla thank you for the replay.

I tried baby food and everything else. I am waiting to give medicine time to work and will syringe feed him since he got his PM insulin.

Syringe feeding will work, but here are some suggestions I was given in the past to try and get a cat to eat in case you want to try any of them. Finger feeding was also suggested.

-sometimes in order to get a cat to eat you even have to resort to dry it is more important that they eat. there are a couple low carb / grain free brands -- EVO and wellness core.

-making a buffet to give him choices
- heating food

sprinkle food with :
- forta flora -- a probiotic you can get at vets or online. is very smelly and cats love the taste of it.
- parm. cheese
- smashed crumbles of dry food
- bonito tuna flakes
- halo chicken treats -- crumble into dust over food
- poor a little water from tuna in water over food ( I use low sodium/no sodium added as other kinds in water has veg. broth in it and I assume that means onions, which are toxic to cats-- check labels)
-powdered oregano. yep sounds weird . but some cats like it and it will entice them to eat.

other ideas of foods to offer your kitty to stim appy:
- trader joe tuna for cats
-baby food -- beechnut turkey and broth or chicken and broth. they have no onions or other additives. some babyfoods have onions . please read labels if you can't find beechnut.
- kentucky fried chicken
- deli turkey /chicken
- plain cooked ( boiled or baked ) chicken breast
-canned chicken for people (watch the label that their are no onions)
- chicken broth -- low sodium

When Vyktor wasn't eating recently I had success by taking the bowl to him in regular intervals of about an hour. It seemed that if he woke up with the bowl in front of his face he would eat some automatically. I found I could also get more into him (or some if he wasn't eating upon home delivery) by hand feeding little balls of food. Pretty icky but it did the job.

It looks to me like your reduction to .75 has failed. I would consider taking him back up to 1 unit - add the ? To your title to get others views. I would also be testing for ketones with those numbers and an off appetite combined with possible pancreatitis. It is important that you keep getting the insulin into him so do whatever you have to to get the food in too. When syringe feeding it's better not to use his regular food as they can develop an aversion to what they have been syringe fed.

Sending vines for Gus.

Thank you all

He refuses all just turns his head away. I use fortiFlora, bonito flakes etc. He also refused his favorite treats and is not drinking. It is past two hours since He got his meds so I am hoping that it should start working?? Shortly I am going to syringe feed.

I just gave him 10 mL liver shake with syringe. I don't know if it is enough food? The liver shake was recommended by holistic vet. on this board for cats that wan't eat and in the past it really worked for Gus when everything else failed

Recipe:
1 cup chicken liver
1 cup tomatoe juice
1/4 cup water
1 egg yolk
1 tsp kelp powder

Blend all ingredients.

I am just praying that he gets better.

Did you give him the bupe? One thing to keep in mind when managing pain is that you want to stay ahead of the pain. If you give a pain med as soon as you think the pain is starting and keep dosing as prescribed, it will keep the pain at a manageable level. If you allow the pain to build, it takes a lot longer to get the pain under control.

Yes I gave him bupe at 5:45 PM 4 hours ago so in 4 hours he can get another dose. No improvement so far he is just laying in his bed not drinking or going to LB. This is very unusual for him.

one thing I've seen here that entices some cats to eat a bit is fried chicken. ( take off the breading and just give the meat)
scrambled egg
lunchmeat

on the bupe... depends on the dose.
if it's 0.3ml or more.... i'd hold off...
but if it's a small amount, you could give a bit more.
My cat can't handle much of it.... she gets dysphoric

I would ask your vet to check on the dosage- Our vet said 0.3 every 12 hours, which was way too much for Tiger.

Is Gus looking nauseated? No food will be appealing if this is the case. Ondansetron may work better than Cerenia for some cats.

Thank you all

About 10:00 PM Gus started to walk around and drink a lot of water and used his LB. I checked for ketons and it was negative. He ate one tiny piece of the HC treat. We gave him 0.3 bupe at 3:00 AM. At 5:00 AM drinking lot of water no food. Soon I will syringe feed. His BG was 386 and we injected 0.75U. DH is saying if his BG glucose is so high no eating shouldn't a problem??????

It was long night and I am preparing myself for long day.

Hi Elizabeth.

Hugs to you and Gus.

One thing I find works for remi is that I put the food in front of him, on a raised plate, wherever he is and I stroke him a few times. Apparently the stroking can trigger eating.

I also swear by ondansteron. Over the years it has helped remi to continue to eat and gotten us over some tough times.
