Gave Oral suspension antibiotic last night per vet's instructions. Then this am went online to see what was in the strawberry flavored antibiotic and it contains SUGAR! Not recommended for diabetic pets. Frickin' A man. Really, I love my vet, but dang. So, not sure what I'm doing about the antibiotic right now. She only gave us an antibiotic because I insisted. She didn't feel he needed it from the dental and couldn't find any infection that would be causing the high BG, but I figured it maybe we missed something and the antibiotic might kick it out. I don't think I will be giving him one at this point. More and more signs are pointing to the hyper-T, still trying to decide about moving forward with the radioactive iodine treatment & test.

So that's my story today. Going to do some research regarding hyper-t and cats and start planning the future. Happy Sunday to all!

Linda, what antibiotic did your vet put Guinness on? Simon was given liquid clavamox and it smells like bubble gum. I don't see anything about sugar in it, but his bg keeps going up and up since I started him on it after Simon's dental. Curious to know if Guinness is on Clavamox or some other antibiotic.

It's not Clavamox, it's Cephalexin for Oral Suspension, USP. He doesn't do well on Clavamox, so she wanted to try this. After tasting a small amount myself and finding it sweet, I looked it up online and found this..."Cephalexin suspension contains sucrose (sugar), which may adversely impact the management of diabetic pets. Consult with your veterinarian prior to administering cephalexin to diabetic pets."

You might try and google it and see what's in the liquid they mix with the antibiotic.

Linda, I can't find anything online that lists all the ingredients in the oral Clavamox, but I am almost sure there has to be sugar in it because of the sweet, sweet smell. I'm calling the doctor tomorrow to ask about it and to change to the pill form if possible. Thanks for your help!

Hi Linda - man what a bummer on the AB's. I think I would discontinue too. so sorry!

Is Guinness for sure Hyper T? I had a cat once that was. We did elect to go forward with radioactive treatment (I131?, I think?, can't remember) - it worked very well for our guy. It is expensive, but for us the cost of the pills vs the cost of the treatment, helped us decide on the treatment. I never regretted it. Good luck with your decision.

Not for sure Hyper-T

T4 test was a 2.5 (I was told this was the high end of normal for a cat his age)
Free T-4 was 56.8 (<50 is normal), but vet felt this might not be the true indicator of Hyper-T.
He was diagnosed with an enlarged heart (a symptom of hyper-T)
And he is CONSTANTLY yowling for food.

Symptoms he is not displaying that are Hyper-T
He hasn't lost any weight
He's not aggressive or unfriendly
His coat is not unkempt or patchy

So, my vet could not give me a definitive answer. She said I could move forward with the radioactive iodine therapy ($1,000+), but she wouldn't recommend just haphazardly putting him on the Tapazole medication. I'm kind of at a standstill right now and don't know what to do. She recommended waiting about 3 months and then testing him again to see what his T4 levels are doing. That's probably what I am going to do at this point.

I plan to call the place that does the radioactive iodine treatment this week and ask some questions about the treatment and what they recommend for a cat that might be borderline. In the meantime, I am doing all I can to help control his enlarged heart issue, starting with getting rid of his Halo Pet Treats which are made with sodium. I just cooked up a bunch of fresh chicken for treats for his BG tests.

Lastly, he's not responding to the insulin, so that makes me wonder about the hyper-t as well. Any experience or thoughts surrounding the hyper-t, our test results or anything else would be greatly appreciated.

we went through the same thing. First test was not definitive, not the second, Third was more than definite, I think it was over a course of about 8-10 months. so long ago it is hard tor remember. Mine also had an enlarged heart, did the xray bit, a few other tests. They told me at the time that they felt that was normal for him: to have an enlarged heart. Back then I knew no better. anyways, we did decide to wait. To this day I don't know if waiting was the right decision or not. When we did do the treatment, I know for our guy it was the right choice. He responded beautifully.
